too much information too late me thinks

a friend emailed this to me..........AFTER I had 2 done... Radiation from CT scans done in 2007 will cause 29,000 cancers and kill nearly 15,000 Americans, researchers said on Monday.

The findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, add to mounting evidence that Americans are overexposed to radiation from diagnostic tests, especially from a specialized kind of X-ray called a computed tomography, or CT, scan.

"What we learned is there is a significant amount of radiation with these CT scans, more than what we thought, and there is a significant number of cancers," said Dr. Rita Redberg, editor of the Archives of Internal Medicine, where the studies were published.

"It's estimated that just from the CT scans done in one year, just in 2007, there will be 15,000 excess deaths," Redberg said in a telephone interview.

"We're doing millions of CT scans every year and the numbers are increasing. That is a lot of excess deaths."

CT scans give doctors a view inside the body, often eliminating the need for exploratory surgery. But CT scans involve much higher radiation dose than conventional X-rays. A chest CT scan exposes the patient to more than 100 times the radiation dose of a chest X-ray.

About 70 million CT scans were done on Americans in 2007, up from 3 million in 1980. Amy Berrington de Gonzalez of the National Cancer Institute and colleagues developed a computer model to estimate the impact of so many scans.

They estimated the scans done in 2007 will cause 29,000 cancers. A third of the projected cancers will occur in people who were ages 35 to 54 when they got their CT, two-thirds will occur in women and 15 percent will arise from scans done in children or teens.

The researchers estimated there will be an extra 2,000 excess breast cancers just from CT scans done in 2007.

    UNNEEDED TESTS

Redberg, who wrote a commentary on the studies, said U.S. doctors' enthusiasm for the tests has led to an explosion in their use that is putting patients at risk.

"While certainly some of the scans are incredibly important and life saving, it is also certain that some of them were not necessary," Redberg said.

In a separate study, Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman of the University of California, San Francisco, and colleagues analyzed data from 1,119 patients undergoing the 11 most common types of diagnostic CT scans at four institutions in 2008.

They found radiation dosage varied widely between different types of CT studies, from a median or midpoint of 2 millisieverts for a routine head CT scan to 31 millisieverts for a scan of the abdomen and pelvis, which often involves taking multiple images of the same organ.

By comparison, the average American is exposed to about 3 millisieverts of radiation a year from ground radon or flying in an airplane -- a level not considered a risk to health.

The researchers said efforts need to be taken to minimize CT radiation exposure, including reducing the number of unnecessary tests, cutting the dose per study, and standardizing the doses across facilities.

Imaging equipment makers such as GE Healthcare, Siemens, Philips and Toshiba Medical Systems are working to develop low-dose CT scanners...........SSF

    Mornin' all

I am a great believer in the idea that you are what you eat. The food (and fluids) we eat determines all sorts of things that operate within the body temple. Last week i picked up a book called "The pH Miracle". I have known about the idea of alkaline and acid foods but i had no idea that the concept was SO much more than that. After the first few chapters it hit me with a ton of bricks that i had A LOT to learn about nutrition and the chemical reactions within the body that create disease or create health. So far i have discovered that i am always eating acid foods and drinks which is why i am having problems in many areas..... muscle pain, muscle cramping, aching joints, yeast outbreaks, dry skin, wrinkling of the skin, rashes, excess weight, hair loss, not to mention my diabetes, mental fog, etc., good grief, I"m a MESS!!!!! LOL

Seriously though, it's making more and more sense to me. Many years ago i tried food combining, and i felt FABULOUS!!! Lost a bunch of weight and one morning after eating that way for about 3 months i woke up one morning and my bloated extended stomach was COMPLETELY FLAT!!! I was shocked and amazed. But because of emotional problems i started eating crappy again. And now i look awful again and i feel like a pile of rhino poop. And that is NO exaggeration.......

So I am determined to feel and look better, although i will have to put off doing some things the book recommends, i am going to start the program today, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. This afternoon i am going to pick up something called "greens powder". Baby steps, i will change things a little at a time until i am doing the most i can do to turn around my health picture and be glowing instead of moaning....

"The pH Miracle: Balance your diet, Reclaim Your Health"
Robert O. Young, PhD and Shelley Redford Young.
    ISBN: 0-446-52809-9

Excerpt: "That's it. That's all there is to it. Get at least three-quarters of your plate covered with alkalizing food, use the supplements as explained in this book and you'll be good to go."

"Bottom line: This program will bring you increased quality and quantity of life. I guarantee you'll see immediate improvement. your energy will increase, you'll find new mental clarity and powers of concentration, you'll build strength and stamina, and you'll lose excess body fat while increasing muscle mass You'll have bright eyes and clear skin. You'll look better. You'll improve your athletic performance. Your entire body will function more efficiently. Whatever health challenges you've been facing will improve and most likely evaporate altogether. In short, you'll regain all the effortless energy and wellness you thought was lost with your childhood. With the healing, wholeness, and rejuvenation that this program brings, you'll experience. possibly for the first time in your life, vibrant personal health."

I'm ready for some vibrant personal health too.

Dr Young is a friend of mine. Ya know he is the great grandson of Brigham Young.....We spent some time together doing a radio series in Ct. on...the "are you sick and tired of being sick and tired".......I also know a lot of folks he has helped. I was part of his company for a few years, Innerlight. It was sold though.SSF

    Post Re: autoimmune dieases

MS is a VERY DISTANT cousin of AIDS; it too is a virus. Most of the diseases that we-here on the thread-have are all close viruses of the same family. Now, before anyone gets the idea that hy/she is going to develop AIDS, don't worry. One has to get THAT cousin directly, from the exchange of bodily fluids with an infected person. MS is what is called a "smart virus." It has the ability either to change or move before the medicine designed to get it (wipe it out). It stays one step ahead of the researchers. We get all these diseases, too, b/c these viruses are all from the same family. We get one, we get the family. Which ones we each get from the virus family depends upon our exposure to other viruses, our general health, and most importantly, our DNA. Some may get just Fibro; some may get MS; some may get several members of the family. (I feel like the whole d-nmed family that could moved in on me,lol.)
We who have MS get many of the same symptoms as those w/AIDS: tremors, staggering gait, diarrhea, loss of weight, dementia, etc. (Not all develop these symptoms; some may develop other symptoms). Some suggested treating MS w/antivirals but were afraid of the same backlash against people w/MS as happened w/people w/AIDS.
Does this make sense to anyone?

    Hey y'all

Well, the minor ice storm left the area without any major damage....except to the heater for the apartment. After noticing that the fan part had run for an awfully long time but not hearing the heat pump run (my window is next to it), i donned my coat, hat & gloves over my granny gown & 2 pairs of socks and went out to investigate. i didn't want to wake Sabrina (it was about 4 am), so i figured i could just go look & see if i could see what was going on. The entire unit was covered with ice, both on the outside & the inside! i'm talkin at least 2 inches of it!! This wasn't even a "real" ice storm compared to our usual ones!! The fan blades inside the unit were frozen to the sides of the thing! And, i could smell that "something's burning" smell. So, i ran (ok...i walked fast) back inside, turned the unit off and went and woke Sabrina. She promptly got my hair dryer and a couple extension cords and stood out there for at least 30 minutes trying to unfreeze the blades. Finally they were free and i went back in to turn the unit back on...but nothing happened. So, off to the grocery store i go (yes, i put clothes on) to get some of those duraflame logs.

The next morning (Sat) Sabrina called the office and the maintenance man came right over. He used 15,000 gallons of hot water from the inside faucet to try and melt everything, but after doing all that he finally concurred with us that it was no longer working at all (smart guy). He then turns the thermostat to the emergency heat setting.....i have never had any inkling whatsoever what that setting was for....did y'all know it works even if nothing else does?? He said it comes directly from some heat strips, not the outside unit. Well color me learned for the day!!

He says he'll have to order a new something or other for the unit on Monday so we'll have to use the emergency setting til it comes in (probably at least a week). He also assured me that using that setting doesn't cost any more than using the normal one. Hmmmm.....after he left i googled it and several sites says yes, it does cost more...lots more. So, i do believe i'll be calling the office tomorrow to let them decide if they'd rather exchange the unit with one from an empty apartment immediately or just pick up half my electricity bill for the month of December. i think that's fair.

Anyway, that has been my excitement for the weekend. i remember when the weekend excitement used to involved dancing & drinking & flirtin with hot butches..... sigh.

well..LOL..she'll certainly have to use more than someone who has never had the experience. NOw..the big issue with it..is the congestion smoking it can cause. I use a vaporizer for it..it heats it without burning it, and extracts the thc, puts it in a chamber that it is inhaled from. No smoke, no congestion, no tars entering the lungs. they can be found at any local "head shop"..but they are also available online. They're not spendy at all..no more than a good galss pipe, and well worth the money if lung function is an issue (it is for me)

    Question Re medical mj

One cannot get medical mj here. MJ is totally verboten! I tried using it for pain and nausea. I had to smoke it, though. And I have COPD. The combination did not work well. Thank you for the info about inhalers. That sounds like a viable idea. Is it possible to make a tea out of it?

Peeking in this morning. I have not been sleeping well at night. I am having some pretty persistent shoulder pain. I guess I must have strained it or something but I thought it would be better by now. It has hurt like this for about two weeks.

Hope everyone is having a good day. I am putting my phone on charge and will make some calls later.

Sure! Thanks for the , you make a lovely brew btw.

asparagus...beets...broccoli...brussel sprouts...burdock...cabbage...carrots...cauliflower...celery...cucumbers...eggplant...garlic...green and yellow spuash (zucchini and summer squash)...green beans...breens of all kinds (including spinach, mustard greens, collards, kale, lettuce, watercress, and swiss chard)...okra...onions...parsley...parsnips...Peas (fresh)...radishes...red and yellow and green peppers...rutabagas...salsify (i don't know what that is)...scallions...seas vegetables such as nori, wakame, and hijiki...sprouted grains or beans or seeds...tturnips...water chestnuts...( for as long as you are having symptoms, go easy on the high sugar vegetables such as carrots, beets, and winter squash) (especially those of us with diabetes)

My brief understanding of this is that most of these vegies should be eaten raw? quote from book : "cooked food requires the body to produce all the necessary enzymes, creating an unnecessary stress and diverting resources from other jobs."
Apparently the enzymes in the raw food are all you need, which means the body can use its energy for healing and not breaking down food. Completely chewing your food is also very important, because the saliva begins the process of breaking down the food and liquids you ingest. I have spoken to many people who got healthier and lost excess weight just by chewing their food until it was liquid before swallowing. And my personal fav is my mom's friend who added oat bran to everything she ate (including ice cream and pizza) and removed over 100 lbs of excess weight from her body.

The book also recommends grasses. You can get them in many forms including dried powder. Try to find the powder with a variety, including wheat, barley, oat, dog, kamut, lemongrass, and shave grasses, but avoid products with algaes, mushrooms, and spiralina. (not sure i spelled that right) Since i am allergic to molds and fungus that is a given for me.

If you like beans, eat them sprouted, most beans are a starch food, it's best not to eat cooked dry beans, or canned.

Most complex grains are acid producing (avoid them) and they make mucus in the body. This means wheat and rice, which you should be avoiding at all costs if you are diabetic, have RA or fibro and many other conditions. My ex went grain free for a while and all hys arthritis and joint pain disappeared, but hy eventually went back to those pain producing foods.
I am gluten intolerant, but have yet to be able to stop eating foods with gluten. Betty Crocker makes a gluten free brownie mix, looks like the main stream is finally catching on about wheat being bad for you. I bought a box, as a brownie junkie i will tell you my honest assessment of them.

Please keep in mind that i am not a doctor or nutritionist or any kind of "authorized" medical person. I am simply telling you what the book says. Please check with your health professional before doing anything about your health!

Thanks for asking Lady Wu, i love sharing information i discover regarding improving health and quality of life.

For those of you who know OHB, she is still back home helping with the family emergency, she told me to tell everyone hello and that she hopes you are all doing well. AND Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. She has no access to computers at this time but if you have a message for her you can give it to me and i will pass it on to her. She will probably be gone for a long while, i will keep you posted. Of course you can always PM her, she will get the messages at some point. Or just post here, i know she will want to read all the posts she has missed.

Okay, gotta get moving and get my errands done today, have a great day, will chit chat later today after my NAP!

Please forgive this very belated welcome to the thread. I did a quick search and this is just the one article that came up.... but it was from the stoner's cookbook so I would think they would be right

Lady Wu... I am thinking that any tea that is made out of cannabis is going to taste NASTY...
(remembering one time when i was 19 and got a Huge swallow of bong water!....eeewwww)
anyway... i am sure it wouldnt be THAT bad... but... even when disguised as butter for a brownie recipe it has a rough taste... maybe one of the new blends...
I am sincerely hoping that this administration will open up some on medical usage...
when i see people suffering so terribly and knowing that if i could talk them into breaking the law they could feel better...
i have talked a couple of my older relatives into it... and they in turn are hooking up their friends... btw... when i say older i mean octogenarians...
    they are sooo damned cute!
oh well... have a good day all... gotta go make the donuts...

I do know they are called A,B,C, and R. Tysabri-that is the name of one of the more experimental and dangerous ones for MS, I believe! I've only been on steroids for mine. My insurance won't pay for the others, plus I'm concerned that one might make me sicker than I am!

    Ni hao!

I am thinking you mean these:

    Avonex (which I take)
    Betaseron
    Copaxone
    Rebif

If your insurance won't pay for it all you would need to do, most likely, is talk to patient assistance and you could get it if you let them know it is excluded by your insurance.

    Try this:

    Partnership for Prescription Assistance

    http://www.pparx.org/

    or call them at 1-800-4PPA-NOW

The phone bank people are really nice. I met them when I was in D.C. doing stuff. I know from experience about getting help through PPA. Here is my story:

IMHO Tysabri is a last ditch drug. I don't know if I would ever take it. I don't think so.

Thank you for that info about CT scans and radiation, SSF. My grandfather was involved with that kind of thing when he worked for Siemens as an exec many years ago. I believe that was when the technology was in its infancy. He was very excited about the possibilities of this kind of equipment to help folks. I'm sure he'd be happy to know they are refining the process even more.

    anyone got any ideas?...

i have syringomyelia, i dont know if this has anything to do with the fact that it seems like most of my glands are swollen... this hasnt happened b4 to a bunch of them at once...
i know squat about endocrinology... will this f* me up if i dont go get a steroid or something? i dont know if its necessary... i hate doing the steroid packs and will avoid them unless i have to... is this one of those things?
    anyone have an educated guess?

PS-i don't know much but i'd imagine that a medrol pkg WOULD do the trick.
