    ~in loving memory~

This is actually a true story...

I was born one day after April fools, which I guess is why I have the sense of humor I have. That and probably inherited from my dad, for he had one helluva one! I got very use to being teased about being a fool baby and the jokes that went with that and found it pretty funny myself. With my dad and I always having been close I always received some kind of joke present along with the real present from him or a very humorous card. One of which read..

Front: It's your birthday and I am so excited....

Inside: I just shit my pants!

I thought I would die laughing when I read this card! My dad and I laughed I think for literally an hour over this and continued to laugh about it throughout the years. This was just one example of many of the humorous things my dad did.

It was my 15th birthday, actually it was the day before...April 1st and I was in my room when my dad arrived home. He walked into my room and said he wanted me to come out into the living room. When I walked out of the hallway I saw this HUGE box sitting in the middle of the room. The box had to be at least 4 ft X 4 ft all contained in birthday gift wrap with a bow on top. Now for my dad being a man I must admit the man wrapped a mean present...I could never wrap a present the way my dad did. Nice crisp clean folds and edges...The wrapping all around the box was tight and not loose the way mine would always come out. I envied the way my dad could wrap a gift.

I was excited and had no idea what was in the box. I stood there for a moment in surprise of how big the box was. My dad smiled and said "I know it's a day early but it arrived today and I just thought I might as well wrap it and give it to you early." I looked at him and I am sure the excitement and anticipation of what was inside shown throughout my expression. I knelt before the box and began to unwrap it slowly, savoring the moment...Yes, I am one of those people that are careful not to tear the wrapping even at that young age. My dad coaxed me to just tear through it but I resisted the urge. I knew I would soon reveal what lay within the box soon enough so I prolonged the excitement.

Once the box was completely uncovered I began to take my nail and split the tape that bound the flaps together. With great anticipation and a huge childlike smile upon my face I slowly opened it to look inside. I stood there at first with my mouth hung open from the jaw. Then I reached in and carefully and with some difficultly due to how close to size of the outside box to pull out yet another wrapped box!

Placing that box on the floor I looked at my grinning dad and began to unwrap that box with the same careful precision as the first. Only to again find yet another wrapped box within...Revealing again another wrapped box inside. Each barely fitting within the other...The more boxes revealed the quicker my careful unwrapping became careless and I began to just tear through the wrapping.

There was discarded wrappings, multiple bows, and several (at least 20) empty box now cluttering the living room floor. I thought I Would never reach the core of this present to receive the true gift inside. It seemed I had been unwrapping and opening boxes to reveal yet another for what seemed endless....and it was!

Finally, I opened the small 4 inch x 4 inch box only to find another wrapped box inside...I Wondered just how small these boxes would go yet realized the gifts that come in small packages....JEWELRY!!!
As I held the very last box within my palm, a tiny red bow perched on top..I began to silently ponder what could possibly be inside that awaited me. Could it be a necklace, perhaps a locket that had an engraving? Could it be a watch? Could it be a set of earrings? Could it be a RING?! I looked at my dad with a grin from ear to ear! He smiled and said "It took me all day to wrap all those boxes...and it was difficult to find the right size box to barely fit inside each one....So I hope you like it because I went to a lot of effort to make it special!"

Again, I stared at the tiny jewelry size box perched on my hand to savor this moment. My dad coaxed me to open it and I found myself not being able to wait any longer. I took the same care as the first few boxes and unwrapped it slowly...As the wrapping fell away it exposed the gold shiny jewelry box...I think every girl, woman knows what this type of box means!

I slowly grasped the lid and lifted it upward...With great anticipation I moved the lid to the side to reveal what would be waiting within the tiny box....My jaw dropped....My Eyes widened....the emotions ran amock...OMG!

"APRIL FOOL'S......Happy Birthday - Love Dad!!!!"

Was all the note said that laid solitary within this glorious box!
I lifted the note to reveal nothing more was inside!
    I Blinked
    I Blinked again!
I swear I Could feel my bottom lip pushing out into a pout....Although, I had to laugh...Yet still the disappointment was present...I felt like I had experience this extreme event yet only to have go through my mind "It's my birthday and all I got was this empty box! AND this fucking note!!!"
In my shock and surprise...I hadn't noticed my dad slip out the front door. Shortly I was jolted out of my stunned stated by a knocking at the door...I looked up and noticed now dad was not there...I thought.."The fucker" (Endearingly of course) even in this disappointed and shocked state I still could appreciate my dad's joke...especially since we both share the same exact sense of humor. I got up and opened the door and my dad walked in with his arms FULL of art supplies...Drawing pads...Colored pencils, graphite pencils, smudge sticks, pastels, paints, brushes and a gift certificate for even more stuff! He had told me that he had got what he thought I could use, but if he hadn't gotten something that the GC could be use to get what he didn't.

I began to cry and called him endearingly a "Butt-head". He laughed and looked at me with the most loving and devious smile....

"Did you really think I would do that to you and not have a real gift for you? Happy birthday!!!!"

That has become such a fond memory and a story I have told many times over. It was so my dad and how he was that it brings tears to my eyes every time I tell it and think about it. It's a story both endearing and funny which was my dad! And this is a memory that I will cherish forever!

    I love you dad!!!

    Great story, Trinity!

Have you ever heard of a guy named John Edward? He had a show called Crossing Over. He'd say that when you smelled a scent or heard a sound connected with a loved one, that that was their way of saying "hi" and "I'm thinking of you, too."

    Happy birthday/ Location location location

I was born in 1871 in Tobolsk, Russia. If you have ever heard of it I would truly be surprised. It was a no account little farm town far away from the Imperial Capital of St. Petersburg of 1916. This is where one of my lives ended in the most spectacular way. First they fed me cyanide laced cakes and wine, of course they had no affect on me. I knew they were poisoned; I ate them anyways as a joke. My ego was so strong then, what a fool I was. Then that little queen, not a Prince, Felix Yussupov shot me. The queen screamed louder than I did and I was the one that was shot. I decided that I should pretend to be dead or the little bugger was going to shoot me again. Not that shooting me made a difference but it did sting quite a lot and I am not interested in pain only pleasure. That’s when Felix ran off to crow about killing the “Mad Russian” as if I was some trophy prize on a great hunt. They of course had to come back and check to see if I was still alive. They couldn’t believe that the fop had the spine to shoot me since he was in love with me. I couldn’t help myself, I opened my eyes just to scare them and of course they ran off again. I was making my way towards the gate when Felix and the Grand Duke Dmitri found me in the yard when they started shooting me again.

This was turning into a very bad night indeed. They then tied me up and decided to throw me in the Neva River. I thought this would be my best chance to get away. That’s when I made the decision floating on that frozen river looking at the stars that it was time for me to step out of the pages of history and become a footnote in this comedy of errors that was leading to the fall of the Tsar and Tsarina. I thought, maybe just maybe, if the public’s scapegoat for their troubles was dead the Romanoff’s could recover their popularity. So my body was found the next day. I won’t bore you of the details of how I managed to get out of my grave; just suffice to say I do not sleep in a coffin even to this day.

Which brings me to Las Vegas today. I was here when Bugsy Seigel came to open his Flamingo Hotel in 1946. I knew what was going to happen in this sleepy little place as time wore on. I knew it would be a place I could satisfy my hungers without much notice or thought. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The mousy school teacher is not going to go home and tell all of her friends about the strange man that she met on the strip. She won’t show them the small wounds in secretive places to show where I have fed. She will just touch them in that sensual way late at night and think of her night. Here I can stay up all night, the lights are always on. No one thinks anything different of it, Vegas is a night town after all. I have made myself a comfortable life here thanks to the trinkets I stashed away during my long lifetime. I have become rather good at playing poker, it’s a quick way for some money for my other vices. After all how easy it is to win when you can read their minds? I have come into contact with others like myself here. We tend to be friendly, as if Vegas is holy ground, we drink our fills, tell our stories of our lives then go our separate ways come sun up.

Look at me reminiscing about the old days, you will have to forgive me I must go now. I am expecting my mentor, Makariy tonight. We are going to paint the town after all it is not every day you turn 136 years old! So raise your glass my friend and say Happy Birthday to Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin

    Oooooh, I love it, BMW!!!

It's a history lesson, partial biography, fantasy, and ironic fiction all wrapped into one great story. Verry well done.

Post Here Goes..."Closing Up Shop"...My Birthday Topic Story...

    Closing Up Shop

    How Was I To Know?

The old creaky board in the floor was repaired last week, but as I rock my old chair back and forth, I can still hear it echoing throughout the enclosed porch area. I can see the new board from here...and I don't like it. I liked the old one better, but that young punk repair guy insisted it was for our safety. We're old, not stupid...when will they learn? With 9 of us in this old house, I think the chances of the 3 of us that can still see far enough in front of us to walk, breaking a board that has been there over 100 years...was pretty slim!

Coming upon my 100th birthday tomorrow.
Gee, feels like just yesterday, I was a mere 98! So, where did 99 go?
Makes me chuckle...the thought of hitting 100 years old, an age I never fathomed seeing!
For some reason, I cannot seem to nap this afternoon. I wonder if it is all a part of some process of a century's worth of pondering...a century's worth of life, getting ready to bundle up and close down shop.

Most of my life's memories are like looking into a vast field of intrigue. I had a full life. I had lovers back in the days, when 2 females together were taboo. Shyt, now it is like a fashion statement...

Reflections of yester~year, all my lovers and all my family have passed on, leaving me to bask in their glorious voices, that seem to call to me louder and louder each and every day.
As I stare out onto the the garden, the waterfall speaks to me...there are 7 stairs of water flowing down into the stream...the greenery and moss that surround the falls look so very inviting. Wish I could get up, get naked...and jump right in! Haven't seen myself naked in so long, I'd probably have a stroke at the sight...or worse yet, scare the other residents straight to their graves.
My eyes set, stuck on this piece of fluid and green nature for what seemed like hours, and it was not until my mind was finished reeling me into the memories of afore, did I turn to focus back on those around me...who now stare at my face looking for signs of return...makes me wonder how long I was gone this time. Makes me laugh inside, because I know they all wonder if they should check my pulse, but on the outside...my face remains unbroken, I would hate for them to think I was happy here. Even the conversations I manage to have with the young folks that are here to care for us ((should we trip and break our selves on the new board they replaced on MY porch...!)) are quite ridiculous. They speak to us like we are deaf infants. Makes me wanna smack the crap out of them, but I am afraid I cannot get up fast enough to get to their patronizing faces. Can't run like I used to...ok, well I never really could run all that fast, but I never really had to. They roll us around, and show us flowers and shyt, like we have never seen one before. They speak slow as if it will help us understand things better. Pisses me off, really. Then, they stop just short of spelling words to each other, speaking in code...so we can't tell that they just talked smack about one of us.
Do folks really tune out on the fact that we were all once young, hard working people...with brains and everything?

Do you think they know...that I was one of the only female pilots to fly as a neutral for medical emergency tasks, for the Canadian Forces, where in mid flight I would place a nurses hat on and travel to the rear of the plane to sit with the soldiers...most of which passed on from morbid wounds before we made it back home? Do you think they know...that I headed out on a cross country trip in the United States...and made it back with the love of my life on my arms? Do you think they know...I found her in Tennessee at a Café', and insisted she join me on the adventure the rest of the way to California? Do you think they know...I was awarded the Urban Award from President Reagan for my Social Work and fund raising in the poorest counties of Indiana? Do you think they know...that I received a Silver Medal in the Olympics for the Javelin throw?
Do you think they know...that those soldiers I just spoke of, that died in flight...are appearing to me every night so far this week?
Do you think they know...that the soldiers have brought me places with them in my dreams?
    Do you think they know...?

    All the while...
How was I to know...that while staring at the falls, and drifting off in thoughts of the afore years, that I took my last breath? How was I to know, that at the strike of midnight, when I looked up at the sky, and all I saw was a reflection of my life...that is was time to go? How was I to know...that my life did indeed bundle up at the ripe old age of a century...and closed up shop?
How was I to know...that the look of wanting to check my pulse, that I was given by the nice young folks who looked after all of us here, was one of genuine concern? How was I to know...that the hand that would reach out for me from within my last dream, would be that of the love of my life...to draw me to the light, and the ever after?
How was I to know...that my 100th Birthday would be so very grand?

    How was I to know...?

wow Daywalker...you have such an awesome way of writing a story that draws the reader within to where you are seeing it through the characters eyes. Feeling what they are feeling and making one go deep into thought afterward.
That was an amazing story and a great perceptive of something most of us fear yet should not. Beautifully written, told, imagined and directed!!! It would make a great short story movie!!!

    Very touching and endearing!

I kind of stepped into this thread after it's inception and just never went all the way back, so I wasn't aware of the previous birthday theme, but I must have sensed it subconsciously, because I wasn't sure.

On one hand, I don't want to duplicate a theme, but on the other (and in the same vein as our beloved thread starter, BMW), it would be an extra challenge to NOT post the same or similar storyline as before (if any of you did submit for the birthday theme). It would take just a bit more creativity to come up with an entirely different vibe and take on the subject, for those that posted before.

So, it's settled (and Trinity seems to be on the bandwagon, too). The topic remains birthday(s). The one caveat is that if you posted before, you cannot post an identical story in any way; whether it be plot, characters, location, props, or tone. The deadline is still June 16th. You all have less than one month now. I know all of you can, and will, do marvelous work!

Right? Please let it be so I am working on something......Did it change? OH OH Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

I believe the end of the extra challenge was June 1st (see below), and the main topic thread is the 16th, so don't panic, Naneegirl! Looking forward to seeing your work.

Enjoying the stories I've been reading here... now that class is over, I look forward to joining in.

Sooo for our extra challenge this month we are going travelling! Well not really but close enough. You know how MI is filmed in oh so many exotic locations? Well we are going to write about an exotic location or not so exotic location. Choose a city that you have never lived in or visited. Use whatever means you have at your disposial to write an accurate day in this city. What would you see? What would you do? Where would you go? What kind of people would you meet? Include street names, building names, store names. The web will be a major tool for this one, you can also talk to people that actually live in that city if you happen to know someone. Tourism sites will be a font of information as well.

I am going to put a word limit on this one of 500 words, it should be enough to put lots of information out there as well as not be too hard to fill the quota. The deadline will be June 1st at midnight. I am giving extra time for this one to do the research.

So pack your virtual bags everyone and take us on a vacation!

The birthday topic deadline set by GemmeFemme is June 16th

The extra challenge was on June 1st.... i haven't set the extra challenge until now.

The extra challenge is to use your Thesaurus. Your story has to contain 5 words those 5 words have to be changed to something different from the Thesaurus. Example: the word LIKE could get changed to AKIN. Just so we know when you have changed one of the required words please capitalize them. I am going to set the word limit at 250 but we aren't going to be fussy about it.

so without further ado here are your target words:
    1. Then
    2. Love
    3. Travel
    4. Talk
    5. surprise

And just for those who don't happen to have a Thesaurus at home (or it's packed like mine is) Thesaurus.com

We will set this deadline for June 30th at midnight.

    My first attempt at this.....

    My Sons Birthday

Its your birthday today my Son
    You sit across from me
    at the restaurant you chose
I watch the way you look at everything
    Satisfaction in your eyes
because for this day you are an adult
    and I smile
you're 13 and still I see the boy
Yet begin to see the man
in your voice, the way you walk
    the things you talk about

For a moment I think back
    to all the birthdays
    cutely decorated cakes
on plates with flying action figures
When a toy brightly wrapped made you happy
    visions of you
    with cake smearing your face
    Little boy laughter
    Little boy charm

I snap out of the memory
    your voice teasing me
trying to get a sip of wine
I look at you and smile
the smile you always say “oh mom” to
    But I can't help it
looking at you makes my heart sing
    You are such a wonder
    a joy to watch
to see your evolution into manhood

For a moment I look forward
to all the birthdays yet to come
    Loud parties with friends
    Gifts of music and clothing,
    visions of you
    dancing, holding hands
    Teenage laughter
    Teenage charm

    Sometimes
I catch a look on your face
A look that makes me want to say “oh son”
And I know that I am a wonder to you
    a comfort, a teacher,
    safety and love
Its what I mean to you

For a moment I look into the future
    I see a man, a family
    A cutely decorated cake
    balloons and the party plates
I see the look of love on your face
    My look in your eyes
This is the gift I would give you
    now, today
    on your birthday
and on every birthday yet to come
That look of love in your eyes

DW, you are too funny! Everyone has until the 16th for the deadline, as mentioned, but you are right...time is a'tickin'!

um...so.....what happens if the deadline come and goes?

Do I have to write something else on the topic? Are you hinting at writing on a birthday that was forgotten? Did the cosmos shift and time was realigned? Is there some trick here I don't know about? Oh my.......is panic setting in? Do I need to go to the questioners thread?

Nanee...I am not really sure what happens when the deadline has come and gone...lol, perhaps we will have to consult with BMW on this one?
I don't think this has happened since I joined this thread...
