It was a few months before I could return to work, but when I did…I never appreciated being a Highway Patrolman more than I do now. Once in a while, I see a black Cadillac…and imagine I can see the RedMan driving…but truthfully, I have yet to pull up along side of one since that night…the night I came back, and He did not.

This story is unbelievably awesome DW...thank you for posting it.

Okay since there are some interested and some not, I am not going to create a 2nd thread. I am going to keep it in this one so we will have 2 seperate challenges, one just a little more difficult than the 1st challenge. I will post the secondary challenge after the next topic is chosen by the winner of Trinity/Daywalker's question

    Nurses commence writing
I don't know about anyone else, but it would be helpful to me to have you elaborate on that. I read ''nurses commence writing" and it means nurses start writing. Shall I presume that you've chosen nurses as the topic? The lack of any punctuation in that statement is a skosh confounding. Could you have meant, "My topic choice is nurses, so feel free to begin writing"? And the deadline is?

You know what? When I wrote that... I had several periods between nurses and commence writing. So I'll tell you what. I am withdrawing from this competition thing because I really didn't want to pick anyway and a friend encouraged me to. So I'll hand it over to you Ascot, especially since now I feel like a total idiot. So go ahead and choose. Thanks.

Personally, I think a simple question of "Is the topic 'Nurses' then?"
Would have sufficed...Instead of the uncalled for sarcasm in the rest of the words posted.

SB, am I to now understand that you are giving up the win of picking the topic??
If so, then I shall proceed this to the next closest guess which would not be Ascot
the closest guess would be HOLLYLANE with 29!

Please let me know SB if this is what you choose to do is pass along the win.

I just spoke with SleepyButch on the phone and He has handed over the sceptor...

So, I am choosing the topic...Nurses...but let me be detailed and precise...'cause I wouldn't want to be unclear....The topic for this months Writer's Duel is Nurses...The topic is not sarcasm...however if you'd like to write a story about sarcastic nurses have at it. On that note I would like to close by making a personal request and perhaps others would like to back me up on this....Please do not insult other writers ideas or writing styles in this thread. The stories written in this thread can be about any topic..if you are offended by any of the writing in this thread...perhaps you might consider creating your own thread and govern it the way you see fit.

Thank You SB for inspiring such a wonderful topic for our story writing this month. PLEASE come back and write a story SB...we like Your writing...

30 days is the deadline for submitting your stories. On your mark, get set, WRITE!!!!

Ok, My Twin HOLLYLANE Has been handed the topic to choose and :: Mocked gasp and winks at SB and Twin:: She chose "NURSES"

I agree with Twin....Everyone here is welcome to write and submit a story to the writer's challenge. However, I am sure BMW will agree, that everyone is to respect each other and everyone else's writings. Sarcasm is not and will not be tolerated. If you don't have nothing at all nice to say...Then don't post.

SB, Please do not allow one person's sarcasm discourage you to post your stories...As always your stories are....um.....well....um....Delightful....Yeah...Delightful to read....:: Whispers to self:: among needing a cold shower after reading them

It's unfortunate, Sleepy, that you were made to feel like an idiot. Clearly that was not my intention. Regarding those who interpreted my query as sarcasm, sorry, but you misinterpreted. As I stated, I was simply seeking clarification. I'm not going to apologize for speaking well and hoping that others will do the same. There was nothing remotely sarcastic or caustic in my question.

Ascot, I clearly read it as everyone else who responded to it did..As you chastising SB for His punctuation. There is constructive criticism and then there is cutting people down. I personally feel I am no less talented, creative, or intelligent because my grammar and punctuation may not be up to par with yours. If you'd like to share your knowledge politely, I would suggest that you do so in a private message.

You know, I am new here, do not know the correct protocol, and am thinking about writing. However, I have to say, I agree with you, I was confused myself. I did not take it as sarcasm.

    Here's my spin on this-

Sleep's post, due to technical errors with the site that occur from time to time (anyone else get those damn bats after ":" randomly???)

Ascot tried to figure out the intention of the post in a direct, efficiant question that was NOT sarcastic, condescending or any thing other than clarifying

blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda snore

None of which fosters a sense of community for writers where an individual can ask a clarifying question or give constructive criticism... which makes the purpose of this thread collapse and turns it into this display case for pieces on the same topic or genre. *yawns* (read- sarcasm... and if you don't care for it, bite me- hard, I might like it but my boyfriend will be jealous- and I think it's quite hot when hy is... mmmm... what a naughty thought... ohhh yeah baby... mmmm, right there..... Sorry! Back!) These stupid fights on b-f go on all the time because, I think, people are 1) addicted to the drama and 2) people read too much into text that has no visual ques behind it. Calm down. It's the interweb.

And I'm sitting this round out because I can not think of anything creative to do with nurses that has not been done already. Laude for those who are able to write something new and naughty or simply evocative.

    I'm baaaaaAAAAAcccckkkkk.

OK now that everyone has said their piece that they felt they needed to express..... We can now get back to what this thread is about....Writer's Duel, writing a story to a picked topic.

    The TOPIC: NURSES

The DEADLINE: 30 DAYS (which would make that MAY 8)

    Thank you!

    Have a wonderful day!

The small slits of warm rays coming through the closed blinds were the only light the illuminated the darkened room. The scent of sanitizer permeated the air strongly, the bubbling and gurgling of the machines echoed softly and the steady rhythmic beeping from the heart monitor was hypnotizing.
The door opened slowly and rubber soled white shoes squeaked as the walked across the floor to the bedside. Light cerulean hues glanced over at the machines as if assessing what they monitored.

She laid there on the hospital bed a mere image of a woman she use to be. Slowly her head turned weakly as her weary drugged lids opened looking up at the nurse that stood by her bedside. Her pallid drawn face looked so helpless beneath the oxygen tube taped in place at her sunken cheeks. Other tubes connected to her slowly disappearing veins beneath the thin skin of too skinny arms. A thin weak hand lifted slowly, the nurse solemnly smiled as she took the hand within hers. Her cerulean eyes looking down upon that of darkened green with compassion and unconditional love.

For the first time as she laid in that bed, having felt the pain of the cancer eating away at her body everyday, she felt an overwhelming peace and serenity....A calm that seemed to embrace her with a warming love that she had never felt. Her thin pale lips curled softly into a smile looking up to this caring compassion nurse who stood at her bedside. She admired her beauty, her beautiful blonde hair that seemed to cast a loving glow about her. Her cerulean eyes soulful and caring. She attempted to speak but the dryness of her mouth prevented it. The nurse knew and reached for the cup of ice chips on the table and proceeded to spoon a few into her mouth. Her eyes expressing the gratefulness. Replacing the cup back onto the table the nurse took her hand once more.

"I’m dying....Aren’t I? Please tell me the truth." She asked hoping that at least one person would tell her the truth of her condition. She knew everyone that loved her was attempting to save her, but what she needed now was the truth.
The nurse looked down upon her and took a seat at the edge of her bed close to her and pulling her hand to her chest, she nodded subtly.
"You ask what you already know." Her voice was soft and resonated like chimes from a crystal bell.

"I know. I just needed someone to confirm that. Thank you for being honest." A tear escaped her eye as they again expressed her gratitude.
"I can be nothing else but honest." The nurse reached up and wiped the tear. "There is no need to be afraid. You will soon be out of pain and in peace and be within it all." The nurse’s hand caressed the drawn cheeks, her touch felt cool yet warm like a summer’s breeze. Her scent was familiar yet nothing she had ever smelled, it calmed her, seemed to embrace her. She couldn’t quite figure out why. Perhaps, it was just the healing nature of the nurse’s profession. After all, didn’t nurse’s deal with death all the time?

"But I don’t want to die. I don’t want to leave everyone I love." Though she felt a sadness, she didn’t feel the need of tears, not any longer.
"But you are not truly dying, you are in fact being reborn and you will never leave those you love. You will always be with them forever." The nurse’s smile was so warm and reassuring that it sent this peace throughout her entire being, through her soul. It almost felt like electricity.

"Thank you. It’s weird....I seem to know you’re right. I don’t feel..." The nurse placed her finger upon her pale dry lips.
"Shhhh, I know...It’s ok. I need to go for a few minutes, but I will return very shortly." The nurse stood slowly releasing her hand and laying it back upon the bed.

As she laid there watching the nurse walk toward the door she realized she felt no pain, she had felt no pain the entire time. In fact it was if she felt nothing but warmth, love and peace surrounding her like she had been placed in a tub of warm water. She felt light as if floating and yet she still knew what was wrong with her body but it didn’t seem to matter anymore.

As the nurse left out the door, remained opened as her partner and her best friend entered. They were surprised to see her awake since every time they had been there she had been too drugged with Morphine to be awake and coherent. They both noticed a difference within her as she laid there in the hospital bed. She seemed to have a glow about her.
They both went to her bedside, her partner sitting just on the edge and her friend standing close by.

"How are you sweetheart?" Her partner leaned in and gave her a kiss and she returned it with all the passion and love she felt that filled her entire body. Her partner was surprised yet thankful to having felt that once again.

"I don’t know how to explain it...I know that...Well I just feel amazing...The nurse that was just here...The one that was leaving when you came in said things that just made sense...She was so...I don’t know how to explain it."

Her friend looked at her partner then they both looked at the door then back to her as she laid there smiling for the first time in a long time since she had been admitted one month earlier.

"Nurse? What Nurse honey" Her friend asked.
"The one that left as you two came in. You passed her." She looked confused, surely they couldn’t have missed that beautiful soul as she walked right passed them. Her partner looked at her concerned.

"Baby, there was no nurse." The two looked at each other again with much concern.
"Well, doesn’t matter. She helped me, she made me realize things...She was just a beautiful soul! She eased my pain and in fact I feel nothing. I feel as though I am floating on clouds...it is such a wonderful feeling. And I Wanted to tell you both...I love you so much...Thank you for always being there for me...Thank you for being such a wonderful part of my life and even though I may leave...I will always remain with you forever. Please remember that." She grabbed their hands and squeezed with what strength she had left within her. They leaned in and hugged her, both crying.

"Honey, your not going anywhere...You’ll get better. Please don’t’ say that."
"It’s ok. Please don’t cry. Don’t mourn me when I am gone, I want you to instead celebrate my life...I am not dying..."

They both sat up abruptly and looked at her.

"I’m being reborn!" She smiled lovingly to both of them.

Just then she looked at the door and the nurse stood there smiling at her. She lifted her weak arm and pointed.

"There she is...This is the nurse, the beautiful soul who helped me."
They both looked toward the door then looked at each other in confusion, neither of them saw anyone standing by the door. The nurse walked over to the beside opposite to her partner and extended her hand.

"Are you ready to be reborn?" She nodded and took the nurse’s hand, she was unaware of the slowing beeping the monitor echoed. She slipped off the bed and stood beside the nurse. She glanced over at the bed and saw her body laying there as the monitor line went straight and as her partner and friend cried.

Standing beside both of them she reached up and touched their shoulders. They both got a perplexed expression and looked at each other. They both reached to the spot they felt the touch and nodded to one another.

She looked up to the nurse, who she now saw in the original form of her Guardian Angel and smiled.
"They felt my healing energy." She whispered.
"Yes, they did." Taking her hand once more she smiled as they faded into silence.

See what happens when you look away?

What the hell? I don't come online for the weekend and all hell breaks loose. None of what went on is what this thread is suppose to be about. It is suppose to be a place that people challenge themselves and thier writing by writing a story catering to the unknown topic within a time frame. Something that most writers do not do by giving themselves a deadline to finish.

It is also suppose to be a realitivly safe space for people who have not written in a while to try to get thier creative juices flowing again. It does not matter what genre the story takes. If you were to read the original post that started this thread you would see that all forms are acceptable erotitca, non erotica, poem etc are all equally as valid.

It was not, nor ever intended to be a spot for people to post thier work and have others constructively critisize, point out errors or just plain old say they don't like it in any way, shape or form. AGAIN this was said in the original post if anyone has bothered to read it.

This thread was not ever intended to be a place for people to decide which story was the best. That is why we have the guessing game at the end of the deadline because each story is valid in thier own way.

The last thing I have to say echos some of what other's have said. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. No one is forcing you to participate. No one is putting you in the job of editor or publisher. If you don't like how this thread is set up make one of your own. This thread was going along happily for a long time, the spirit of which is clearly outlined in the first post.

Actually one more thing... Thank you for creating an atmosphere of critizism your efforts were not apprechiated or helpful. Think about what you say to people and stop behaving like 3 year olds fighting over a ball in the playground.

PS I will be posting the extra challenge later tonight

    Extra Challenge #1

Okayyy well this is an extra challenge as well as our topic this month of Nurses. As always participation is optional the extra challenge is ment to expand writing skills by focusing on one single part of writing. Much like a writer's workshop would focus on one thing for the day, that is what the extra challenge is going to be about.

I am going to be utterly selfish and controlling on this one, I freely admit it. I have some ideas for challenges that are based in workshops that I have attended that can be modified to fit into our little thread but I also don't want to give up control of the extra challenges until the ideas I have had for months and months are done with. So there won't be a guessing game at the end of the challenge to see who goes next... at least not just yet.

That being said I repeat participation is not required.

So <<insert Mission Impossible theme music here>> your mission should you choose to accept it is....to use 350 words (no more no less) to describe something, anything. DO NOT give it away but discribe it well enough that your fellow writers could hazard a guess and might actually be close to correct. The deadline for this challenge will be April 25th at midnight. No extentions or late entries.

The idea of this challenge is to exersize your descriptive writing skills while staying within a word limit. An example will be posted in a few minutes.

This message will self destruct on the 25th

    Example of extra challenge #1

Okay here is an example of the extra challenge. Yes it's 350 words on the dot. Feel free to guess what I am discribing

Our music drifts through the open window on the heady and heavily
magnolia scented air. Our lullaby reaches your ears, washing away the
cares of the day; much like the rain that inspired us to sing We sing to you
from our amphibious amphitheaters dotted throughout the yard. Shadowed
and secreted away by the deep green almost waxy leaves of the magnolia
bushes. Occasionally our song is drown out by the rumble of the semi
trucks snaking their nocturnal twists and turns to their destinations. We
become silent as the neighborhood cats prowl the yards in their enactment
of lions on the savanna’s hunting for their little extra treat their owners can’t
supply; we burst into song once the danger has passed.

We sing because we are happy. We sing, letting our friends know where
we are. We sing, to hear a special call in the darkness of the night. We
sing because we are lost in that same dark night. We sing to tell our stories
and give you the gift of music. We sing swelling our voices to fill the night
the same primal nights our ancestors lived through with your ancestors,
vaguely soothing knowing that something else alive shares the night with you
when sleep is chased away by the stresses your kind creates for itself.
Something we don’t concern ourselves with. We don’t care about what car
to drive, or how big the yard is that we sing in, or how many times a week
the landscaper comes in; we only care about the night, the perfumed air
and living to sing another night. We sing because we can.

Our song weaves it’s way through your dreams, providing the background
music for your mind’s hidden and dark dreams. Swelling to crescendos and
fading to dulce as you tumble through your dreams. A symphony of nature
and the wild in your cultured and manicured front yard. We sing as we
march up the front steps to lay in wait underneath your porch light as our
dinner falls to our feet. We have truly sung for our supper.
