What
is the dealio with the Butch-Femme symbol? The
suggestion of the Butch-Femme symbol is sexual passion,
with the black triangle (butch) piercing the red circle
(femme). The triangle has been a long-time symbol
of queerness. The circle is an ancient goddess symbol,
and both the triangle and the circle represent power.
The Butch-Femme symbol on the site was created by
Rhon for the community in general. Please feel free
to use the universal Butch-Femme symbol for any community-building,
non-commercial purposes outside the web site. If you
want to use the symbol for some commercial purpose,

Who
Are We? Butch-Femme is about being
who you are. It is not about "labels".
We define who we are when we tell the truth about
our lives. Butch, stone Butch, Femme, and stone
Femme are natural gender expressions that are
of the heart, having little to do with appearance
or any stereotypical code of behavior.

Who
exactly is this web site for?
Butch-Femme.com is primarily for Butches
who are into Femmes, & Femmes who are into
Butches. The focus is & always has been
on that whole ying/yang of the Butch-Femme dynamic.
Butch-Femme.com is a public web site, of course,
so we are accustomed to a variety of queer &
curious folk wandering in. Tolerance is key.
For the most part, respectful Queers who identify
with other various descriptors are welcome,
as long as the strong spirit of this Butch-Femme
space is always honored.

How
did the Butch-Femme renaissance begin online?
In the 1950's,
Butches and Femmes met in dark bars
and softball fields, but in our era, technology
has allowed a renaissance. Because of computers,
this is the golden age for Butch-Femme culture.
The earliest groups for Butches and Femmes started
in the late 80's on UseNet message boards such
as soc.women.lesbian-and-bi. There has been an
active Butch-Femme community on AOL since it's
infancy. The first public B-F mailing list groups
Boychicks and Femmedykes were created by a dynamic
Femme named Dorsie Hathaway through QueerNet.org
in 1994. Today Queernet.org hosts dozens of Butch-Femme
related mailing lists, as does Yahoo. The first
comprehensive online community Rhon and Chris
founded in 1996 was originally called "Butch-Femme
Heaven." Yes, it was butt-ugly, but the site
had several mailing list groups, and the original
Butch-Femme-specific personals. (We did them by
hand back then!) Soon after, Butch-Femme.com became
the first domain dedicated to Butches and Femmes.
