There are some of us that are not of the mexican decent. So English being the universal language is what the majority understands. Not all in the world is spanish. I was somewhat confused today at lunch when eating in a chinese restaurant the mexican people at the table across from me actually asked for salsa to put on their chinese food. Each nationality has something to offer and I truly believe that that the food from other cultures are good just as they are. I am Italian....you won't see me asking for Romano cheese to put on Chinese food. I think that cultures are made to be different. It addition....The mexican people always ask for mexican music to be played in the chinese restaurants....mexican music in Chinese restaurants??? What next? A Sombrero in the middle of the floor? I have no idea why cultures cannot be respected for what they are. After all ...that is why there are differences in all cultures. And about the mexican woman at the counter as I was paying for my meal trying to teach the oriental lady how to speak spanish....not everything is mexican...it's like conversion to the mexican culture all over the place. We are in america.......not mexico. No offense but we need to all know that everyone has something to offer and not everything is one way....the mexican way.

Yeah, darn those Mexicans. Trying to cram their so-called "lifestyle" down our white-bread throats, just like those damn ho-mo-sex-yals wanting to get *gasp* married. Maybe Dubya can propose a Constitutional Amendment banning the Spanish language inside the US borders.

Howdy All

Rose said.... Hey you! I haven't forgotten about you honey, I promise. Just been BUSY! YEAH ok we need to talk before friday cause that's when i'm coming to nashville grrl. Staying saturday night too. Have to be home at 4 sunday as I have to pick my pups up between 4 and 5. Lord, by the end of the weekend - you nashville folks will be sick of me lol

After 3 pages of catching up I can't remember -- wait - ice cream... I reckon I'm just kindly different cause I don't care for the really sweet ice creams. My fav is bryers mint chocolate chip. I like sherbert too. When they start throwing the nuts and fudge and peanuts and bananas in there I don't like it. Tell you the best dessert I ever had - what was it called... flaming alaska or something like that. DAYUM that was awesome!!! Had it on a cruise once.

About the brownies... eggs can go bad in the frig? I thought they lasted a really long time??? Well, they're really good now cause they're a little drier and not quite as gooey.

Work made us take a 'diversity' class this week. (They started after they got about a dozen or more class action lawsuits against them for age and gender discrimination - plus a black guy stood at a busy light/intersection saying my co. discriminates against blacks). It was a short video on a puter and it was really well done. They showed their diversity 'logo'. It was quite long... age, race, color, weight, size... so on... then it said sexual preference!! I was FLOORED! It made me feel good that the company I work for recognized this difference in people and will protect this difference. Way cool!!!

As for LuckyBlueEyez post.... I live in east tennessee... which as far as I can tell... is one of the most bigoted places in the world - unless you're a white, straight right winged southern baptist redneck. Now I worked in a gas station when I was younger and a whole bunch - I mean like 20 or so - mexicans came into the gas station. The cashier asked me to come up front and help her check people out cause the line was backing up. So, I took spanish in high school - don't remember much of it - but a little so I asked little things like - que pasa? Or hasta manana. One asked if I could speak spanish.. I said - un poco. Well.... that fella stood by the door with some other mexican people and I could tell he was talking about me... he kept looking at me and motioning towards me. What I won't forget - EVER - was the look in his eyes. My small gesture meant alot to him. I cannot hardly explain it - like hope, goodwill in a foreign land. I was humbled by that look. Deeply. I realized - me and that guy are the same - trying to survive day by day and we are both foreigners here in east tn. A little bit of hope and goodwill goes along way. Cultures are different - but people are the same.

Now I the shyt like this,,I am part mexican and come from a long line of pentecostal preachers, some people dont know cause in mexico things are different,,Ive been to chinese resturaunts in mexico and they have salsa there, play cumbias, etc,,,

This nation is made up of different people,,part of it belonged to mexico at one time,,the real americans are the american indians..I can imaging what they thought when the white man came and took their land,,killed their people and brought their food and music,,

Appreciate the differences,,dont get pissed,,this is america man,,t

I take this to mean you are against gay marriage as well because of course, the majority rules and is always right. How can a large number of people possibly be wrong.

One of the best metaphors on culture and race I ever heard. I can't for th life of me remember who said it, but I think it was on a radio show. The lady was talking about how you think of each culture as the ingredient to a salad. They are very different! However when you eat this salad, you don't want everything to be the same, you can taste the individual ingredients, yet they all work together to produce this pleasant tasting salad. Who wants to eat a salad where the lettuce tastes like carrots, that tastes like tomatoes? They work together and equally!

One of the articles in the paper that I'm going to bring this weekend is titled "Sinners get equality under the Constitution." It made me mad the second I saw it because as we know, heterosexual don't sin. :@ I saw this headline as I was getting ready for work and thought, "Ya know, when I saw the Rodney King riots I thought to myself, 'I wonder what has made these people feel like this to where this is the culmination of events.' (I was in the closet at that time) and now I understand."

Happy St. Patricks Day all!
Kai~ You can get Deuce out cause ya'll have been together longer..lol..I don't *quite* wear the pants *Yet*..giggle BUT I am working on it!! Really it is like pulling teeth to get her to go somewhere and then I get to hear her bitch the whole time. It really isn't worth it! I told her last night that if she didn't start getting outta the house with me more, then I will be going without her. I already have tickets to Talladega for next month, aquiring upcoming Braves tickets, and possibly in June, a plane ticket to Orlando for the weekend for a relatives kickass birthday party. When she see's what I am doing without her, she might get off her ass!
Have a great day all! Mycalann and I are heading shopping!!!

Ok, while I'm going off, I'd like to say that I also can't stand the term "sexual preference." As long as this term exists and survives, we are going to be seen deep down as straight people choosing to be gay.

OK...

Good morning everyone! Yes, I have not had my first cup of coffee yet, lol.

I had a feeling some would reply with a take the ball and run with it attitude result. I really don't care, when I have a statement...I will speak my mind. NO...I'm not against gay marriage...but then again I would expect some to let their minds roll out the door with it. Maybe if you try hard enough...you may be able to retrieve what's left and spare all of us the expense of the extra gossip and / or drama! If you like salsa on your eggs....so what! I like chinese food just the way it is....as the culture serves it! I refuse to go back and forth on the subject and that's good you miss your mexican friends...What does that have to do with the price of beans in China! That's beans in China...not Mexico. For those of you that are Mexican...that's cool too. I never said I was against mexicans. Re-read the post. No need to jump on the defense and then go all over the place with it!

Sorry Kai, I simply can't...

LuckyBlueEyez, it would seem that even though you stated you don't wish your post to be offensive, the simple act of posting it IS to anyone who can read. And read it I did, 3 times. You are SO right when you said each nationality has something to offer, from food to social customs. How WONDERFUL that we live in a country who can CELEBRATE this.

I have a question for you. Is there a reason you can't simply skip over a post that doesn't interest you? Or is there a reason you can't do that? For one who doesn't post very often on the thread, how can what you said be taken for anything but inflamatory? And for God's sake, you live in Nashville. We have a huge ethnic melting pot here, and this still bothers you??

I worked in a restraunt for a while in NC where there was a very large Hispanic population. The very few words I learned to better communicate with my customers was appreciated. English is NOT the 'universal' language anywhere, else the whole world would speak it. But it still is not the official language in a country that promotes ethnic diversity, nor should it be.

So you dont want your chinese food garbled with provalone cheese? Then don't put it on there and let those who want it, have it. The BEST thing in this country full of ignorant bigots IS the fact we still have a CHOICE. Your ignorance is deplorable...at what point did all Spanish speaking people become MEXICAN? And if you would like to discuss the English language in all of it's glory, go take a class to correct your grammer and come back to chat.

How disgusting that someone who is gay is also still a bigot. Learn tolerance please...it's a much better eating partner.

You are sooo wrong!

Here is an example of someone who just takes everything out of context and babbles on in an attempt to respond to something that her mind saw in one way...DUH! read the post again. I never said that. I won't justify myself again. You just go on and find your own interpretation and give yourself something to rattle on about. As for ignorance....it is you that is taking it past the simple opinion of events witnessed....now that's ignorance! Don't label my words in your twisted defense. You don't know me and it appears that your lashing out is nothing more than an attempt to fight against something that doesn't exist. Once again..read my post! I stated that ALL cultures have something to add. You seem to think that if I don't say something defending just the Mexican culture ...I must be against them...... NOT! It appears that there is more hate coming from you!

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY TN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ....Passing around green beer... ;)

Hmmm.... I open up the thread this morning to find Lucky's post blaring hatefully back at me... I haven't even had my first cup of cafe, so please excuse me. As a hispanic butch woman, I think I would suffer enough discriminatory comments from the straight narrow minded bigoted world. I would always hope that the gay commmunity would be more open minded about differences, but I I seemed to have been proven wrong by Lucky.
I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY. The wonderful thing I miss about it was it's diversity. You can go out to eat anything from Chinese, to Ethiopian foods... go to neighborhoods that are predominantly black, hispanic, Italian, etc. I would go to the local Irish pub and then eat at a Greek coffee house. That is the beauty of America... we have people of different backgrounds, cultures, races, ethnicities, religions that made up this country to what it is today. And let's not forget the American Indians, the first AMERICANS that were poorly treated. It is people like you who bring about bigotry against people, like the Asian-Americans that suffered discrimination in the times of WWII and Vietnam... like the Jews, or anyone not blond haired blue eyes during the holocaust...
I also understand that the european countries are more willing to learn each others languages than some americans, who feel that english is the one and only language on earth. I have taken french, italian, latin, german in school... I would love to be more proficient at them and maybe learn more languages. Knowledge = Power.
Oh, and my mom does not speak much english at all... does that mean she needs to be sent back to El Salvador? My dad has a deep Puerto Rican accent and loves blaring his merengue music, do you want him back in PR??? They both have worked... both have paid taxes... both are human beings that wanted what everyone else who came to America wanted, an opportunity to live and work, without being persecuted.
Eat romano cheese on your chinese if you like, I wouldn't care one bit... as some mexican restaurants do serve burgers, chicken fingers and fries to satisfy those palates who don't care for the mexican food but want to eat with friends there. I like iced coffees and honey mustard on my fries (GASP!) more differences!!!
I am a proud Hispanic American. I used to try and smother that part of me... in a way I felt shamed at being latin because of senitments like Lucky's. I have grown out of that and am wanting to learn about my heritage and culture. I have always respected others in their differences and love to learn about them. Being open minded... that's the only way we can get along.

VIVA LA RAZA!

Enough said from this Latina like Madid said "Que Viva La Raza"

As a diversity trainer for one of the big three automakers.... I could go on for days on the topic. I will spare everyone...
Jes, I have been taught that the correct non insulting term is
Sexual Orientation. Again forgive my spelling.
I learned alot during this training. Things I never really thought about... I think the most important: we may say things unintentionally that offend people, once someone brings this to our attention, the fact that we have offended them, it is at that point of becoming aware, what kind of person we are. Based on that information... if we continue to behave in an offensive manner that tells alot about your character... IMO.

I see nothing wrong with trying new things as long as the person is willing to learn. As long as everyone is willing. I don't believe in force feeding so to speak. I am usually open to learning new things about other cultures. I find it interesting

diversity according to Nick.

OK...

Thanks to Rose and Kai for the support...

Mr. Diversity, you always bring a smile to my face...LOL

Madaid...somehow "Viva La Raza" is soooooo SEXY coming from you.

I went back and re-read Lucky's post because I wasn't real sure what all the fuss was about. I can understand some of his point...when I try a new culture's food, art, music, I like to try it the way the 'natives' do it. But if it doesn't meet my likes, then I may alter it slightly to suit my tastes (especially the food). That's the beauty of America. Not knowing whether these HISPANIC people had previously tried the Chinese food I wouldn't dare make an assumption. Many great culinary dishes come from combining the cultures! Just MHO, I would probably have told the 'Salsa story' in more of a "I saw the silliest thing the other day..." not quite as brusk as it was told.

And one little cultural lesson...we (hispanics) tend to be a little classist. We don't like being lumped in with one culture...i.e. we're all Mexicans. We don't mind Latino/a or Hispanics, or when you know our nation of origin that...Cubana, Mexicano, Espanola, etc. But WE ARE NOT ALL MEXICANS. (or Cubans, or Puerto Rican)

I am sorry for those of you that got your blood pressure up some today. I hope your day progresses better....

I'm wondering what they did or will do to keep the copper on the bike from oxidizing and turning blue like the statue of liberty does. :s

Do they just polish it a ton or something?

We are in america.......not mexico. No offense but we need to all know that everyone has something to offer and not everything is one way....the mexican way.

I know that I am going to upset some people here by taking this stand (which is sure to be unpopular), but this post doesn't seem worthy of being kicked out of bf.com over. In fact, I am aware of instances in bf.com where people have specifically and intentionally violated the rules and agreements we all make when we sign up for an account and yet, they still have accounts here. I sincerely don't belive this person was trying to be racist in hys comments. I don't think he said what it was he was trying to say very well. My impression is that he was trying to say 'that we should all respect one another cultures' and 'that he personally believes that when we mix up the cultures that we are not properly respecting each individual culture because we are diminishing it compared to our own.'

My ancestory is british-scottish-cherokee and I am proud of all My ancestory as I am sure all of you are proud of your ancestory. Many of you may not have travelled to another country and been the one trying to adjust to a new environment/culture, but I have had that experience. I worked and lived in China for one year and to survive there, even though English is officially their second language, I had to learn Mandarin. If I wanted to eat in regular food places I had to learn to eat with chopsticks (fortunately I already knew how because I had bothered to learn when I went out to chinese restaurants in America). btw, Chinese food in America is not real Chinese food...

My point here is that if I had not bothered to learn Mandarin and follow Chinese customs, I would never have had the experience of China that I did. I could have survived by eating only at restaurants with English menus or by hanging out in Hong Kong all the time, but I would have gone through my money much faster and I wouldn't have got to see China the way I did. I think that this was what he in his own way was trying to say - that he was trying to make this point.

Just for clarification, I love hearing Spanish and have great desire to learn to speak Spanish well. I consider Spanish to be America's unofficial second language and living in TX at the moment, it would certainly aid Me greatly (particularly if I wanted to teach ESL in America). It was never my intention to upset anyone with My post, rather it is simply to state that I feel that this person was misunderstood and that I feel the action taken against him was extreme. I feel simply discussing with him what his true intent was or wasn't and stating that his post came across as possibly racist and that he needed to be careful in what/how he worded his posts in the future would have been sufficient.

Wishing a pleasant evening to you all...

Cos

Cos - I didn't exactly like his post but his comments after the post pissed me off. Right or wrong - Rhon made his decision and he is the web master/owner of this site.

Kai - I checked out the bike AWESOME!!!!! Also - if you mix a little salt with lemon juice it'll take the tarnish right off copper. I don't reckon they'd do that on that bike - but a little useful info for other copper things.

Grilled cheese - I'm a PRO. I make them 5 days a week for lunch. For the best grilled cheese - use your fav bread... use fake cheese - Kraft is good.... and the secret to the best grilled cheese - use REAL butter. Turn the heat to medium and check it often so it doesn't burn. A nice golden brown on each side will melt the cheese nicely.

Jen and Rose - y'all have to get better for this weekend!!! Get some rest and stay warm. I used to get sick constantly every year. My doc told me - take the hottest shower you can stand - put an extra blanket on your bed - button your coat up - wear layers of clothes - STAY WARM. Your body temperature is a priority and your body will work as hard as it has to maintain your temp... so when you're cold your immune system is stressed and you get sick easier.

Headaches - I take 2 tylenol arthritis and it kills every pain in my body. They are like 600 mg each and they kick butt!!!!! A friend at work looked down the other day and I asked what was wrong. He said he had a bad headache and he usually can't get rid of them. I gave him one of those suckers and at the end of the night he was beaming.... no headache at all. I hope your head ache goes away.

Well, I reckon I am full of info today lol
Have a great day y'all.... see y'all friday :)

I woke up with the stupid allergy sniffles - BLAH... so I sympathize with you out there battling the pollen bug.

Jen - I hope you are feeling better!

Kai - yes, shopping... you should have seen me hold Rose's items... I tried not to sigh and roll my eyes too much... I even experienced the fitting room bench... I think I almost fell asleep on it a few times. :$

LD - Yeah, it looks like you and Rose will have a blast shopping - period!

Cos - Yes, I think everyone is entitled to their own opinions, be them bigoted, self centered and narrow minded. I expressed my opinion on the matter but was not childish enough to drag it on like it was. There are more tactful ways to say things, and people should think before just blurting things out. It's great that you had the intelligence to learn a language while you were in another country... many people don't think that way. They feel everyone should learn english, in America as well as in other countries. It's that smugness I don't like. I have observed it too many times. In a way it has infiltrated and ruined many languages (as some of you know about spanglish!) and that saddens me. It's almost like part of the culture is gone.

Just my morning .02 cents.

Goodmorning all!

I agree with you Drew. I know Lucky in person and I don't think he's a racist either. I do think he is a little rough around the edges and had trouble getting his point across....and then when challenged he became very aggitated and combative. I am having trouble coming up with the right words but, I think this venue is not very kind to those who can't communicate in a manner that is considerate or empathetic or whatever of all kinds of people.

I have been guilty of saying things in the past that were stupid...we all have... but I knew to stop and say "I'm sorry if I offended you, it was not my intention" rather than "Tough shit".

Morning honey...I'm feeling a bit better as far as the sinus thing goes, but I'm well into PMS hell it would seem this morning. Poor Madaid...send her some light *L*

I am agreeing with you and Shark. I am a bit baffled at why LBE's comments were EVEN posted, as they had nothing to do with nothing, period. You don't like cultural mixing? Then don't do it and leave everyone else alone. While his posts might certainly have been taken out of context, as it was pointed out by Nick, his insistent clammoring afterwards made it quite obvious he wasn't concered he had upset anyone. Had he really cared he wouldn't have continued on, or at least would have made a valient effort to better explain and apologize.

I'm sure Daddy Rhon is far from perfect (as we all are) but this site is excellent and I for one am happy he did what he did. And yes, it's his board so in the end he and Miz Chris have the final say.

However, Drew is right...American Chinese food is just that...concoted for our american palate. I learned that working in a Chinese restraunt. Which further proves my point that LBE's comments were uneducated at best...

Ok, I'm off my rant...and going to cuddle with my Daddy before I blow a gasket.

Love to all...bbl

I've just found that if you start your comments with "I may get flamed for this" or "This will probably start something" chances are you shouldn't be saying it. When people say "This may sound racist"...well yea, because it was!

Chances are he was grossed out that people were putting salsa on their Chinese food, not that they were Mexicans doing it. Who knows? Thats another issue with the written word. Its not always perceived as intended. However, coupled with the above "I'm probably going to get flamed for this" you can bet people will get defensive.

You are cracking Me up today Jess...LOL...I often feel like I should start every one of My posts with "I may get flamed for this", hmmm, I wonder what that says...

This will be the last time I address this issue, I said what I said because I felt strongly that someone should speak up and I will whenever I feel strongly that someone should speak up and no one else is. I don't agree with the way he handled himself. He got defensive and obviously lacks social skills.

I agree that this is Rhon's domain and that he makes the rules. I felt that the violation of the rules was no different than I have seen before and there were different consequences for this person. I am only asking that the consequences be consistent and equitable to the violations.

What I would further like to ask all of us here and everywhere - that we try to reach out with love and understanding to those who may say or do things that upset us, rather than trying to ridicule or provoke them. It's not an easy thing to do, I know, I'm still working on it myself.

Now back to our regularly schedule program... ;)

So there you have it. Percy and Pirro are my new babies.

Jodi

Suddenly I'm confused...do you say Pirro with the short vowel sound or the long vowel sound? Personally I like the long vowel sound, but it makes him sound like a pyromaniac...LOL

Anyone, got any picks for the final four?

I'm thinking the final four will be: UK, OK State, Texas, and UConn. I'm not completely sure about Texas...Duke has a great team...as usual.

But for the womyn: I'm definitely thinking Texas, Tennessee, UNC, and Duke...well, ok I think UConn may end up in the final four instead of UNC...

Madaid - What are your thoughts? I know you like basketball... :D

here I am...here I am...

Good afternoon everybody....

Just got in to work...had to take Jose to his shrink and to get some blood work.

Today is my FRIDAY!!!! Of course I will work more at home tomorrow than I ever do at work.:$ Getting ready for all my wonderful friends.

LD-as soon as I finish posting I will e-mail you directions.

I love books-a-million but never have time to read-I have a lovely stack of books that 'I'm planning to get to'.

Jenn you are so cute....can't wait to see you darling.

About the potluck...at this point we have plenty of desserts and meats. All that is still needed is side dishes or breads. This message only applies to those of you that haven't already let me know what you were bringing, or aren't real sure.

Cos - I agree about the original disertation. I think LBE didn't state it well and that's what I said...but Daddy Rhon has the power. And that's that.

Nick---sorry haven't called...home life seems to only get more chaotic!!!!! :'( I will be joining y'all on Friday night, promptly at 10:45pm. Look forward to it. But won't be joining y'all on Saturday night. Bev & Ann are having another L-word party and showing the 3 latest episodes...so I have some catching up to do. Plus I don't think I've seen them since the last time we were over there. :( (k)

Duke and Texas are both in the Atlanta bracket so they both can't make it to the final four. You need to pick one and then pick one from the Phoenix bracket: Stanford (1), UConn (2), NC State (3), Maryland (4), Syracuse (5), Vanderbilt (6), DePaul (7), Alabama (8), Southern Illinois (9), Dayton (10), Western Michigan (11), BYU (12), UTEP (13), UL-Layfayette (14), Vermont (15), Texas-San Antonio (16).

Hope you are having a great day!

::laffin:: Some of us are clueless about sports. Me for example. Although I was a cheerleader in the 6th grade for my school's basketball team. All I remember is that we won the championship and green is not a good color for me.

UConn is definitely a good pick for going all the way, but to be honest, I just don't like their coach...and it has nothing to do with his lack of undershirt... ;)

"Cure for Homosexuality 10:14PM PST, Mar 14, 2004

Apparently, the mormon church through BYU in the past and Evergreen have helped many homosexuals see the light through use of electric shock and vomit therapy (repairative therapy). All it takes to change this behavior apparently is enough epicac is induced or electric shock is applied to the genital area. Why are we not talking about laws to make these people undergo repairitive therapy (do an internet search on this topic)."

Yes, someone actually thinks this.

Evenin' TN!

LD - It was a wonderfully warm day today! I am glad you and your enjoyed it! I know whenever I talk to my parents in NY they talk about how cold it is and the snow... I am glad spring is here!

Cos - I love sports... mainly playing as opposed to watching... but the only basketball I watch is the WNBA. GO LIBERTY! I guess up where I'm from, collegiate sports isn't as celebrated and exposed as much as it is down in the south. I remember my sister's ex boyfriend pointing that out one time since he was big into football.

Hey friends...
Y'all I had a terrible morning. I got up early and took my dogs to the vet to get their shots up to date. My big (old) dog will bite and I told them that - well they just had me hold her. The vet talked me into putting her on a heart worm prevent to keep the hook worms away and they had to take blood. Well the vet couldn't stick her so she shaved her fur on her arm. She got an assistant to help her hold her. They got the blood and let go of her and she jumped down from the table. It was awful - she has very bad hips. She fell into the corner and struggled to get up. I thought I was going to die. Then they told me they thought her hips joints were 'froze' and they were surprised she could even walk. Yeah, that made me feel real good.

Well then it was my little dogs turn - 35 lbs. I told them I wasn't sure if she would bite or not. So they muzzled her. Good knight - she struggled and fought us every step of the way. Then they had to give her the kennel cough med - which is a liquid they put in the nose. She got so upset she expelled her anal glands (kindly like a skunk does) OMG it was the awfulest smelling crap. I was gagging. Well, they couldn't give it to her cause she freaked so bad and they had to inject it. Now, my little one has been limping for a while now... holding her back paw up some days others she is fine. Well I told them and the vet checked her over. Decided to get xrays. She had a broken ankle. I about DIED! They said it was mostly healed and gave me an antiinflamitory for it. If she is still limpong in 10 days I have to take her back - could also be a pulled ligament... like a ACL in people.

I feel so bad that she had a broken ankle and I didn't know. I reckon cause she never yelped when I checked her out when I first saw her limp. And then she would only limp once in a while.

Well - I'll see y'all tomorrow - someone needs to get in touch with me with real details so I know what is going on, where, etc.
