Heh. I'm off today too. I have a festive day of house crap planned. That, and Mr. Landlord has now added exterminator service to all his properties so me and my mini-zoo have to hang around outside for awhile today. This should prove entertaining. I expect the cat to go even more psycho.

And now....Tales from Tech Support Hell

Yesterday I got a call from a retired guy who just bought a new system (quite frankly more of a system than he could possibly need for pictures of the grandkids- the monster Optiplex) and he's trying to get his internet connection. He's already been on the phone with AT&T for a couple of hours who determined there was something wrong with the hardware. While possible, I still doubted their assessment. So I go through the normal steps & he tells me it says "the network cable is unplugged." Again, following the normal steps to check the cables, etc. he tells me he has a router. I ask him about how he has the cables connected, he tells me, and what he is describing to me sounds NOTHING like a router. After banging my head on the desk a few times he finally gives me enough info to determine that it is indeed not a router, but a USB hub. I asked him if this is what AT&T was having him try to use to connect everything and he says yes. I have to laugh at this point. I explained what this was and that it was not remotely necessary for what we are trying to do and to move it somewhere away from the computer so he doesn't get confused again. I kept explaining what a network cable looks like (thicker than a phone cord & has a clip that is similar, but bigger) he says he understands and keeps trying to connect the cable in, but still no internet, or network link light on the back of the computer. Again, I follow the normal steps. I even had him connect the old system back up to make sure it wasn't a problem with what he assures me is the network cable, and it worked. Ok, so now I am starting to suspect a problem with the internal NIC. THEN....THEN....THEN....he says to me, what about this DLink thing I've got sitting here. I jump for joy and say THAT, sir, is a router!!!! I ask him about the wires he has connected to it right now and he tells me well, there's a yellow one going from the modem to it, and then a blue one going to the old computer. I said, with extreme glee, Mr. <name>, THOSE are network cables. He isn't going to use the old pc anymore and there is no need for the router, so I had him disconnect the yellow cable from the router and connect it directly to the system. Of course when this happens he gets the link lights on the back of the pc. I start doing the happy dance in my chair. I asked him to open IE, and BOOM - he has a webpage. I decided it might be proactive at this point to explain what a usb cable is, what it's used for, and where they connect to the pc, as well as the other ports on the back. I also remoted connected (getting him to understand how to do that is another nightmare of a tale but I won't go into it) to check his security settings because AT&T had him making all sorts of adjustments and he wanted to make sure everything was ok. So, almost 90 minutes later, Mr Man has an internet connection and his wife can now stop yelling at him in the background.

Oh. He was also hard of hearing so I had to yell the directions over and over. :|

Although the pills are kind of nice. Sort of. They make me sleep more than anything else. Truthfully as drugs go they are kind of boring, I don't see what Rush Limbaugh saw in these things.

Heh. You'll want to get a flexible plastic ruler and a plastic comb in the near future if you don't already have them. They are quite effective for handling that nasty cast itch without doing skin damage. Trust me on this.

I wish it was quittin' time. It is almost time for my lunch break though, which is good cause I am hungry! This is a short week for me, I work until 9:30 tonight, then all day Thurs, and that's it for the week.
