there's an old adage, "if you don't know where you're going, you'll end up somewhere else."

from www.quintcareers.com ...

The following exercises in Part I provide us with feedback on our lifestyles, values, achievements, and other sources of satisfaction in preparation for writing our personal mission statements. Part II builds on that feedback to help you articulate your statement of purpose.

A personal mission statement addresses three questions:

1) What is my life about?

2) What do I stand for?

3) What action am I taking to live what my life is about and what I stand for?

A useful mission statement should include two pieces: what you wish to accomplish and contribute, and who you want to be - the character strengths and qualities you wish to develop.

Part I

A. Describe your ideal day. This is not about being practical. It is designed to include as many sides of you and of your enthusiasms as possible: creative, competent, artistic, introverted, extraverted, athletic, playful, nurturing, contemplative, etc.

B. Imagine yourself 132 years old and surrounded by your descendants and/or those descendants of your friends. You are in a warm and relaxed atmosphere (such as around a fireplace). What would you say to them is important in life? This is designed to access the values and principles that guide your life.

C. Imagine that it is your 35th or 50th birthday (or another milestone in your life). You have been asked by national print media to write a press release about your achievements. Consider what you would want your family, friends, co-workers in your profession and in your community to say about you. What difference would you like to have made in their lives? How do you want to be remembered? This is designed to inventory your actions and accomplishments in all areas of your life.

Part II

Review your notes for these three exercises. With those responses in mind, reflect on questions 1, 2, and 3 above. Then write a rough draft (a page of any length) of your mission statement. Remember that it should describe what you want to do and who you want to be. This is not a job description. Carry it with you, post copies in visible places at home and work, and revise and evaluate. Be patient with yourself. The process is as important as the outcome. After a few weeks, write another draft. Ask yourself if your statement was based on proven principles that you believe in, if you feel direction, motivation and inspiration when you read it. Over time, reviewing and evaluating will keep you abreast of your own development.

i think that's a great start ... a mission statement usually follows- if loosely- a certain pattern.

it is not only what you believe in, but what your intentions and visions are for the future- and what that looks like.

Hello, ALL

Kyss, I believe this is the toughest challenge you had given to the posters. I am up for your challenge because it teaches me about myself each time you have given a challenge to the posters.

Therefore, I will have your assignment posted as soon as I develop it from my heart and not giving you words for you and others to read.

Kyssme???

i found your thread.... :)

for some people who know me up close and personal....

they know this could turn out to be a 25 page thesis.... several hours latah...

but in short:

it's simple for me.....

Be true to YoU.

Yessss. That is all my mission statement would be comprised of.

Cuz if you are being true to you, and true in relationship to others ----

then it's my personal opinion, that one couldn't ask for anything more, to be in "right" relationship to themselves or another.

:D

I have been participating in this Kyssme, just not posting. I have been working on trying to post something but I wear different hats so to speak and have different mission statements with each.

Myself, I have been doing the "homework" you requested in the first post and trying to single it down. Mine kind of ring true with several that have posted her but don't quite state exactly what I am about. I am working on words to define it, so I may not be able to come back and post it here, but it goes something like this

I am too busy with being myself to judge you, so please understand I accept what you are presenting to me as the beautiful work you are putting into yourself.

Kyssme,
I like this. It comes at a good time for me. I've copied the challenge to a Word file and will be working on it.

Okay Kyssme, I've worked on this and though it may not be what one would expect, it's an honest appraisal of my life at this phase. Keep in mind that I just uprooted myself from a cozy existence in Santa Fe to move to Detroit for phalloplasty surgery--a 5-phase procedure that takes about 2 years.

What is my life about? Me.

What do I stand for? High standards.

What actions am I taking to live what my life is about and what I stand for?

* I'm working to learn as much about the career field I have chosen as I can
* I'm working to create a calm pysche and a healthy body
* I'm working to be as objective as possible about myself and my life
* I am creating my wildest dreams

1) "What is my life about?"...My life is about the entire journey it is not just in striving for and reaching a particular goal or destination.

2) What do I stand for? I stand for those who can not stand up for themselves. The less fortunate, the homeless, the mentally ill and animal rights.

3) What action am I taking to live what my life is about and what I stand for?
I belong to and support PETA and the SPCA. The homeless I help as often and anytime their lives intertwine with my own giving them food, money a prayer. I belong to NAMI and plan to write and do a documentary exposing the truth to how the mentally ill are treated inside of hospitals as well as helping to educate society on the facts behind their conditions further alleviating the publics misconceptions and fears.

"what you wish to accomplish and contribute, and who you want to be - the character strengths and qualities you wish to develop?"

I wish to accomplish and contribute a few things. A documentary and/or a screenplay.
I want to be simply happy with myself and to accept myself just as I am now flaws and imperfections as is.
My character flaws I need to work on are following through on projects I begin.
I would like to gain the strength of becoming better organized, more self confident in my endeavors and a little more forgiving of my own short comings as well as other's shortcomings close to me. I also need to learn to be more patient.

A.>" Describe your ideal day. This is not about being practical. It is designed to include as many sides of you and of your enthusiasms as possible: creative, competent, artistic, introverted, extraverted, athletic, playful, nurturing, contemplative, etc."

My ideal day would be waking up snowed in at a bed and breakfast in the mountains somewhere beautiful with another beautiful soul. Having a nice brunch together with no newspapers, tv or radio. Going exploring, having snowball fights and talking about life, our goals, spirituality and making intense love all day long.
Then again this is coming from someone who planned and wed on New Year's Eve.
That would be another really neat day...Imagine renting a hotel room overlooking Times square on New Years eve and then going to a dungeon party after we watched the ball drop. Do I just get to pick one kind of day??? Because I have a picnic themed day in my mind also.

B. "Imagine yourself 132 years old and surrounded by your descendants and/or those descendants of your friends. You are in a warm and relaxed atmosphere (such as around a fireplace). What would you say to them is important in life? This is designed to access the values and principles that guide your life."

I do not want to live to 132 years old...But there are some relatives I would love to come back and haunt lol.
There are so many things I would want to tell them but it really all comes down to Do to others as you would wish it done to yourself. And in life there is really truly only two emotions...Love and Fear. Always choose Love over Fear. Also to Be the change you want to see in your world.

C. "Imagine that it is your 35th or 50th birthday (or another milestone in your life). You have been asked by national print media to write a press release about your achievements. Consider what you would want your family, friends, co-workers in your profession and in your community to say about you. What difference would you like to have made in their lives? How do you want to be remembered? This is designed to inventory your actions and accomplishments in all areas of your life."

I have already passed my 35th so by my 50th in 6 more years...I would like to be remembered for writing something really wonderful. Helping someone where it made a great difference in their life so they in turn make a difference in someone elses life. I really do not care how I am remembered. I care about now and how I am living my life to best serve my purpose here now.I want to be a voice for those people and animals who have none.
I would love to have a part in closing down all zoos and circuses. And if animals need to be slaughtered for food then I would make laws that it be done humanely. I would also like to see and take part in making changes in our countries entire health insurance policies.

This was a very insightful exercise. Thanks for sharing it Kyssme.(f)
How appropriate the timing also with the New Year approaching.
