Helping out some folks with some technology questions made me realize there's probably a lot more people out there who need a hand understanding something or figuring out how to do some things with their PCs or gadgets.
Post your questions here and I or another technologically inclined member might have your answer.
I'll also share some tips every once in a while, like today:
You lead a busy life, maybe you're in a relationship where you don't live together or you've got kids and family you want to share your schedule with, but it's not easy to do when you're not always together?
30boxes.com (http://www.30boxes.com) is a super sleek and sexy online, shareable calendar. It's 100% free. You and your friends/loved ones can sign up and add each other as "Buddies". You can share your calendars with each other easily.
What's your question?

Seeing as how other members have really found this tip useful I figured I'd post it here.
If you're rather not have your Buddy List open in another window you can use the Active Topics page instead of the front page of the site.
At the bottom of the "Bizzy Bizzy Forum Talk" section that lists the most recent thread activity there is a slender white bar. If you can see text there it might say something like "More Bizzy Bizzy Forum Talk" on the right side. If not, you can still click all the way to the right on that bar and it should take you there.
Or you can simply bookmark this page: http://www.butch-femme.com/portal/modules.php?name=Active_Topics

Yep, that is da bomb~!
I never had clicked on that tiny little *...more* button on the bottom of that box, in that little white line, never even saw it before
Who knew?!
I usually will click on everything just to see how it works, but I didn't even see that before. I love it.
Still teachable after all these years,

OK- I will go first...
I recently lost all of the data on my laptop because the manufacturer "reimaged" the hard drive. Well, some of the data was salvaged via restoration at a tech shop.
I have audio files which are no longer accessible.
Any ideas about how *if* I may access them again?
Info:
wave format
tried to open in original program, iTunes, Real Player, Windows Media Player.
original file size is intact, so some data, whatever it is, is still there.
THANK YOU

I just went through something very similar. It's possible, but of course, I can't make any guarantees.
I'm assuming that you're running Windows on a PC. If not, let me know. Try PC Inspector File Recovery (http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm). For this to work best you should have another drive available to move the files to. I would recommend investing in an external hard drive. (Note: This has the added bonus of serving as a backup solution when you're finished with your recovery efforts)
Download and install the program above.
Open the program and select English
Choose "Find Lost Data"
Select the drive where the "lost" data is, click on the check mark
Close the pop-up that opens next
Click on "Root" in the left pane of the open window
Browse to the appropriate folder on the right pane of the window to find your files
If the files are found select the ones you need to recover
Right click and select "Save To", select the appropriate place to save them onto your new external hard drive
Repeat until all files you need to recover are successfully saved in a new location.
The above might work okay without an external hard drive, but as you now know, have a duplicate of all your files is a really great idea.
Good luck. Let us know if it works for you.

Here is my Question: My Avatar's head is supposed to "bounce". I'm supposed to be able to upload an animated avatar, but in it's original form, it's too large. I have attempted to re-size, but it takes the "bounce" away :(
Any suggestions on how to make my Poodle behave appropriately here?

You might be in luck.
There are free tools available to work with animated GIFs at GIFWorks (http://www.gifworks.com/).
Go to http://www.gifworks.com/image_editor.html
In the drop down menu called "File" select "Open Image"
Use Method 2 and follow the instructions.
Good luck, looking forward to seeing your bounce!

Thank you so much for helping here, if we can get this to work, I'll be indebt to you forever!
Alright- the files have been placed onto my Maxtor external hard drive (some were there already, and others I added through your data recovery download.) But I still can't open them.
Windows Media Player sent this:
"WMP can not play the file. Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
I checked again, and they are wav files, so WMP should recognize them.
Then I started to look for codec downloads and I AM SO OVERWHELMED I have no idea which one I might need. (i.e. what is an AC-3 file?)
I've also tried to open it in the orginal program Olympus Digital Wave Player with no luck.

I'm not a fan of Windows Media Player. It's always been buggy for me. Instead of having you download a bunch more software why don't we try something else. I'm going to send you a PM. If it works, we can post a solution here.

I'll tackle the easy question first.
It really depends on what you use it for.
If you just use a media player for MP3s:
If you have an iPod it makes sense to just use iTunes seeing as how you have to use iTunes to manage your library.
If you don't have an iPod or have another MP3 that supports alternatives then you might try WinAmp (http://www.winamp.com/). They have a free version that's pretty sweet.
For video:
If you're playing things from the web I try to stick with QuickTime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html).
But there are lots of things on the web that QuickTime doesn't work for. I've found VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) to work for just about everything I throw at it.

This is a bit bigger beast to tackle and I'm sure MsLinus can offer some advice on the best firewalls and protection around.
Let's start with your system. Can you tell me what you've got? What kind of computer? What operating system? What's your processor speed? How much RAM?
From there it's be a good idea to know what you do have running.
Although, I will tell you the best way to get things under control is to make a list of the things that you use regularly and then re-install your operating system then re-install those programs. That starts you with a clean slate and you can manage things better. However, I realize that for most users that is a very scary proposal.

I checked out the gifworks link you put out there, dykeinabox, and it was great for resizing a couple of avatars that I haven't been able to use in my LJ due to size restrictions, but some that I really wanted to work with, but are NOT gif pics, couldn't be opened. Is there a way I can change a jpeg or other non-gif pic to a gif so I can play with them?
Thanks in advance. :)

Annie, what image software do you have? In Photoshop you can simply open a JPEG/.jpg image and go to FILE/SAVE AS then select GIF from the drop down menu labed "Format". Here (http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imageconversion/ht/converttogif.htm) is an about.com page that talks more about this and the general steps to take with any other image manipulation program.
If you don't have a similar program you can use a file converter program such as Image Converter (http://www.gold-software.com/download6040.html) or ImageMagick (http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php). Each of these types of programs have various strengths and weaknesses.
You can also use IRFANVIEW (http://www.irfanview.com/) or XN View (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enhome.html). If either of these programs will open the file you can use the Save As function to convert the file in a similar manner as above.
Good luck, let us know what works for you.

Ok. A few things to start with (assuming that this is Windows?):
1. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add Remove Programs. Remove any programs you haven't used in a year or more.
2. Doubleclick on My Computer --> right click on the C: drive and go to Properties. Select Disk Cleanup. It usually will find the temporary internet files and such to remove.
3. Download Startuplist.zip (http://castlecops.com/zx/Merijn/startuplist.zip). Unzip it and doubleclick on the program inside. It will run. When it's done, select File --> Save As. There will be a text file that produced from it. Send me that info to me via email (syrlinus@syrlinus.com)
4. Download HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip). Unzip it and doubleclick on the program inside. Select Scan (do NOT Scan and Fix). Let it run. When it's finished select Save Log. It will save the file. Open it and copy the contents into a post here.
These two programs will show what you have on your system that should be allowed and what shouldn't. That will probably help clear up some of the slow downs and we can remove the excess programs that wouldn't be needed.
Do you know what firewalls, anti-spyware and anti-virus programs you have installed? We'll start with this and continue from there.

Kudos to DIAB for setting up this thread.
MsLinus, I'd like to get your opinion on my security setup. For spyware I run Adaware and Spysweeper (update and scan once per week), and intermittant Spybot if I suspect anything else. I've been using AntiVir for the last year (personal classic version) and have been quite happy with it (update daily, scan weekly) after some unpleasant experiences with Norton and Macafee. I have been researching Fprot and considering a switch, it seems a touch cleaner. But, there is the fee to be considered and I have had no problems using AntiVir. Is it worth changing over? Or, am I just asking for trouble and wasting cash? What do you think?

Good idea and practises. I'd also suggest putting HiJackThis (the link is in one of the posts above) and doing a check now and again with that. All spyware and AV software are based on what they know so new malware isn't necessarily picked up right away.
Also, if at all possible, avoid using IE. It is an albatross for Windows systems and opens far more security and privacy violations than the purpose it serves.

As the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. MacAfee and Nortons have become so bloated they are useless. I've run into far more problems with them in my present job at VMWare (OS virtualization company) than I've ever seen in my roles as admin. AntiVir is decent from what I've heard (never used it tho'). I've been partial to Grisoft's AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) for quite a few years. And I also firmly believe that one shouldn't necessarily have to pay big bucks (maybe small bucks for the individual developer types or free) to get decent software.
That said, what about firewall (prevent those from coming in who shouldn't and prevent things from going out that shouldn't) as well as encryption on messages sent out (for those paranoid types)?
Half the battle in security is awareness and you are certainly on the right track, IMO. :)

SweetChili:
xml files are:
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a W3C initiative that allows information and services to be encoded with meaningful structure and semantics that computers and humans can understand. XML is great for information exchange, and can easily be extended to include user-specified and industry-specified tags.
(gawd I love google).
So where did you find these xml files? It's possible that they may be for an RSS feed ..
(Rich Site Summary or RDF [Resource Description Framework] Site Summary). An XML format for sharing content among different Web sites such as news items. How does it work? A Web site can allow other sites to publish some of its content by creating an RSS document and registers the document with an RSS publisher. A web publisher can post a link to the rss feed so users can read the distributed content on his/her site. ...
So do you have any RSS feeds from blogs or from here (does BF have an RSS feed?? I never looked.. )

Nothing wrong with Symantec. It's likely required by the company as per licensing. But it is somewhat "bloatware" (has far too many things in it and thus, takes up more resources than it should). As long as it's updated daily and you do scans regularly (setup up a scheduled scan if you haven't). Also, you can use TrendMicro's Online Scanner Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) to ensure that your AV is doing it's job (consider it a 2nd opinion).
As for the malware, AdAware is definately king in this field and SpyBot isn't bad. Ideally, you want to avoid using programs that bring more malware in. So if you don't need to use Internet Explorer use a browser like FireFox, Mozilla, Netscape, etc.
Knowledge is half the battle however. ;)

A lot of sites I use won't work with Mozilla and the others, and I do have to go to alot of sites that spread all sorst of nasties..most notably Lyrics sites.
I virus and adaware scan every day, laugh!
Can I send you a copy of what shows on my hijack this? Do you have time? If ever I can help you with anything let me know!

Annie previously asked about resizing and changing some graphic files. I mentioned Photoshop, which is quite expensive. MsLinus mentioned The GIMP, which is challenging to some users.
There's a free, robust alternative called Paint.NET available here: http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/index.html (Please donate to software projects like this if you enjoy the software and are able).
Paint.NET mimics many of the tools available in Photoshop with out the painful price tag.

Yes, a lot of it is musicmatch, and that is OK.
There is a really nice alternative to MusicMatch called MediaMonkey. Their standard player is free and more robust than the basic version of MusicMatch. They also have a lifetime option for their paid version at $30.

Do you have a "Tip of the Week" email that I can sign up for? ;)

Hrmm... I'm thinking a hex Editor. Sassy, when the system crashed (IIRC) were these files being access or was the Maxtor being accessed?
No, it was on the laptop itself. The tech shop said they wouldn't even turn on my computer to fix the problem, so I didn't need to back anything up. But they ended up sending it to the manufacturer who definitely turned in on, and then re-imaged the entire hard drive!
What I have now, is whatever the tech shop could recover AFTER the re-imaging. And it is saved to my Maxtor.
Thank you, truly, for trying.

Ok, I got a new Gateway on the 10th. (yes, I know, I have heard alot about buying a Gateway, lol) Anyway it has a GeForce 6100 Video card in it. I also have Paint Shop Pro X and it was not working, and so I contacted Corel about it. They said there was a known issue with the video card not working with PSP X. The following is a letter that the tech sent me:
Computer hardware configurations including dual core processors and nVidia 6x and 7x GeForce Graphic cards could conflict with certain versions of Paint Shop Pro. This hardware configuration used in conjunction with nVidia's 81.85, 81.87, 81.94, 81.95 and 82.12 Forceware driver causes failure of the Paint Shop Pro X interface to display. This issue has been reported to Product Development.
To workaround this problem, uninstall either of the aforementioned drivers and install Forceware driver version 78.01. See the following nVidia web pages for more information about the 78.01 driver and uninstalling nVidia drivers.
Driver Un-installation instructions - http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.98.html)
Forceware driver 78.01 download and information - http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_78.01.html (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_78.01.html)
Alternately you can obtain a Beta release of the most current Nvidia drivers from the following link (NOTE: We have heard confirmations from users that these drivers do allow Paint Shop Pro to properly function)- http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1292 (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1292) Keep in mind that these are beta drivers.
Ok, so I uninstalled the driver and downloaded the Forceware driver 78.01 and got an error message saying it was not compatible. So I went to the second link and downloaded the Beta driver and installed it. It works perfectly with PSP X. The issue I have, though, is since doing that, when I go into the MSN groups I cannot see most of the graphics that are on the pages there. I do a lot of stuff with graphics and am active in several of the groups or it wouldn't really be an issue. It seems I can see graphics everywhere else but there. :s
Also, in my start menu, and on my desktop, several of my icons are not the proper icons, they are the little white squares with blue borders (like program symbols, I dunno what you call them, generic icons)
Everything worked fine until I put this Beta driver in, and like I said, everything is fine other than the issue seeing stuff on MSN. Any ideas?

Can you provide a screenshot? It might give an indication as to the problem. The issue with beta is that .. well, it's beta with little to no testing.
Apocalipstic: given that the situation you have is from work there may be another option to consider. For many businesses, having employees deal with malware is costly and inefficient. If your company is large enough to have it's own administrator, you may want to get the admin to investigate the feasibility of getting WebSense Network Application (http://www.websense.com/global/en/). This device filters out the malware before it reaches the employees' browser. It's pretty good and it even filters out phishing attempts.
DiaB: Not sure if you've ever seen this but might be of interest to you (depending on your geekiness): SysInternals' ProcessExplorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html). Far more granular in regards to what processes run on a system and which threads it calls. Great for finding things like keyloggers, trojans, malware, etc. :)
Now, off to dinner. Back in a bit. :)

Any ideas?
Make sure your color depth is set to 32-bit. You would probably be better off waiting for your beta driver to become stable and download it again. There's a reason it's a beta, and you just found out what that reason is.

Ya, a screenshot of what you're seeing and yes, you can send it to my email posted earlier. :)
[/FONT][/COLOR]Also, if at all possible, avoid using IE. It is an albatross for Windows systems and opens far more security and privacy violations than the purpose it serves.
[COLOR=Black][FONT=Verdana]
Thanks for the good information I usually run either firefox or opera, not being a fan of IE, as far as firewalls go, I use the standard XP pro (my bad) I run a WiFi Linksys setup to WEP with 128 bit encryption, changed all the defaults of course. I will try your suggestion of using HighJackThis. I am not very knowledgable on encryption and just practice separation of church and state by using webmail only and only opening attachements I am expecting specifically. What have you got in your advise bag on this? :D
I really appreciate all the help folks are giving each other in here..........

Well, webmail has the advantage of being able to access it anywhere but the downside is that it is in "clear text". This means that anyone that "sniffs" the network when you download it can see it. If you want a free and encrypted webmail, I would suggest Hushmail (http://www.hushmail.com/). But that depends on how sensitive those emails are and if it's necessary.
In addition, even if you are expecting an attachment from someone remember to save it first before opening it and scan it with your anti-virus to make sure that there isn't a hidden virus inside.

No I haven't downloaded Firefox... I know I should, cuz IE sucks! And no I haven't reduced it to 24bit.
Video card is nVidia GeForce 6100
Gateway GT5028
AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor
1024MB DDR Memory
Windows XP Media Center
I'll go download Firefox and change to 24 bit and see if that helps.

Thanks again for the information, my email is never of a critically sensetive nature so I don't worry about clear text. If I'm going to overthrow a country or something like that, it won't be in email..lol. However, I have not been scanning attachments since they are expected, I now see how naive that is and will modify my behaviour to reduce that open window risk.

Ok. Been talking about this with some hardware junkies I know and a few ideas/suggestions:
1. Clear out the cache on all your browsers.
2. Upgrade your DirectX (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/)
3. Ensure you have all the updates from MS in regards to your OS by visiting Windows Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) (you may need to do a few reboots for this).
If that fails to work, I'd like you to view source on one of those pages, find the link for the specific graphic and put that into your URL bar (if you need help with this let me know and I'll break it down further). I want to see if it's a question of the page representation or something else. I have doubts that it's the driver persay but something else at play (if it was the driver you'd see this behaviour elsewhere, IMO).

If you right-click on the page, you should have an option to View Source. This will bring up the HTML for the page and will have the HTML tags for images. You want to look for an HTML tag that looks something like:
<irc src="http://path/to/picture.gif">
I want to see if you put the http path into the browser address location and go to it if you see the picture.

1. Can you see the pictures in the BF galleries?
2. Pay a visit to Trendmicro's Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) and run the simple scan. Because it's isolated to just one site I'm wondering if it's some malware (can't hurt).
3. There is a new Beta driver release: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1330 Might be worthwhile to try (worst would be to return to the 83.10).

Unfortunately, I need something a little more exact. 2 minutes? 1 minute? The clip you sent seems to think it's about 4 seconds but one of the tools I've found allows to extend it and and slow the speed down. I need help, want to learn how to maintain this beast better. Please help me clean up my hard drive, getting sluggish and hangs sometimes. There is stuff running on here I know I am not using. And I probably have too many firewalls, virus protectors, spam guards... a bit of overkill, but hey, no viruses ma!
Time to simplify and get this monster reigned in. Where should I begin?
d
Lady Di....
I use a program called System Mechanic for several reasons, the most prominant of which is that I am lazy, and although most of these tasks can be performed individually, it's nice to be able to click on a program and have it run through everything you need rather quickly. You can program it to run the cleaning functions automatically and any selected interval. So you can set it for say, monday night at 2am and when you wake it everything is done already.
Secondly, for butches, I like the cool toolbox it puts on my desktop.
Aside from that it is a solid program that has been featured in several reputable PC magazines. There is a free 30 day trial offer, so you may want to check it out before purchase.

For those of you that have XP and are finding compatibility issues with your anti-virus, either Norton of McAfee, you may want to try this instead;

TS - replacing/upgrading those items is relatively easy, but because there's a number of things you want to do I'd urge you to look at the cost/benefit of replacing all of them or buying a new system. Then again you could "build your own" with isn't that hard to do either.
When you get home tonight give a gander at what you got and let us know. Think about your budget as well.

I agree with MsLinus.
There are other options of course, but that's cheap and should be relatively easy. Give it a shot and if you ahve problems let us know.
As always, make a back up of your file before you start messing around with it.

Do either of you use McAffee? I have their firewall/antivirus. I have been having problems getting any of my aol or yahoo music to open on my computer. I went into the help faq's and found that I need to check to see if Port 80 is open, which I found it is not. Tried to open it and it's asking for all kinds of info I don't know.
I was thinking that maybe once I got home I could take a screen shot and you guys could help me figure out where to find the info I need?

Certainly. You can email the screenshot to me. It sounds like you might have blocked those processes in your host based firewall. Do you know how to access the rule set for the firewall? (where you tell the firewall what is allowed to go out or come in and what is blocked from doing so)

I don't know for sure. I just opened the McAfee program and clicked on the tab to allow different ports to be opened. I'll have to look at it a bit more when i get home.
Guess I shouldn't start asking questions without the info in front of me, lol.:s

I thought I'd post this as warning and heads up for people. There is a technique that is going on out there on the big ol' internet known as PHISHING. Now, phishing (sounds like fishing) is the art of getting information from someone by sending them an email asking for information. Often these emails look like legitimate emails from a bank or other financially-related industry company.
Greetings!
My name is Joseph Ngoho
I am sorry for the unusual approach but I have acquired your email address (syrlinus@yahoo.ca) as a person who is actively involved or is `looking for an
online `Business `Opportunity.
If this is the case I would be grateful if you would allow me to send you details of an `opportunity that I am currently involved in at the moment.
I did not want to send you any details until I had mailed you to seek your `permission first,as experience has taught me that not all leads that we acquire are genuine`Business
`Opportunity Seekers, If this is the case for you then please ignore this email as you have already been excluded from future mailing from me.
If however It would be ok to send you details of my `Opportunity then please send an email to "josephngoho@techemail.com" with "Enlighten_Me" in the subject line and your Name in the text body, without this I cannot send you any further information I am afraid.
So why not give it a try?... it's`FREE anyway!...Just give me a chance to show you how our program works.
You can cancel your membership anytime you want.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you very much for your time and your cooperation,
God Bless You and your Family

To no longer receive any important information from us, just reply
?NOT_INTERESTED ?to joseph_ngoho@earthlink.net.
Now, this particular email is interesting since I don't use that address at all for work related stuff. It's for stuff here or other lesbian related activities. A few things of note:
1. If an email has an option to email them to remove you off a list, DO NOT reply. It may sound odd but email mail lists are worth thousands of dollars. By emailing a reply you are telling them that your email address is alive and well.
2. Banks, software manufacturers, etc. will NOT email you updates. They are not that customer service friendly and often their email addresses are used falsely for viruses and other scams. If you think you're bank is contacting you, contact them -- BY PHONE as listed in the phone book.
3. NEVER give out information like PIN numbers, SSN/SIN numbers, etc.
4. Disable viewing email in HTML. While I know it looks all pretty and such, it can hide the true nature of an email, which is to scam you. It's easy to hide the true nature of an URL (for example --> www.butch-femme.com (http://www.syrlinus.com))
5. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is. No one is going to ask you for help at getting millions out of Nigeria (as a weird bit of trivia, the Nigerian Scam is Nigeria's 2nd biggest money import for that nation).
6. if you think you've received a scam and may have fallen for it, notify your credit card company and bank right away. It is costing them a lot to deal with this and the sooner they know the sooner they can help you.
Phishing can result in identity theft. The figures for ID theft in 2000 was that it would cost you roughly about $50,000 to get your identity back. And today it's hard to do that than ever before due to new laws related to terrorism, etc..
As for "brilliance" above, it's a scam. If I reply he'll likely have a "great deal" that I can get in on if I provide my SIN number and a credit card number. One way to verify this kind of stuff is to take a section and put it in Google. I took "opportunity that I am currently involved in at the moment" (with quotes) and put it in Google. Lo' and behold, a whack of hits that suggest strongly that it's been around since 2004 as a scam.

i'll check out what i have when i get home... what kinda things do ya need to know? i think my video card is ok, and my memory is probably sufficient... but i do think i need a new cd drive for sure. my budget is minimal.
re-visiting this subject...
i'm planning on eventually getting a new computer to use just for PC Gaming, but until i do i'd like to upgrade my current one. i'd like to upgrade at least my memory, and my video card, and may be my cd-rw drive (i think may be it just needs cleaning). i'm wanting to spend as little as possible on the upgrades (may be around $200-$300 total once i'm done, give or take $100).
if anyone could give me tips, pointers, or suggestions it would be great.
this is what i currently have:
Dell Dimension 2400
XP SP2
P4 2.66 GHz
512 Ram
and i think this is my video card, but i'm an idiot when it comes to this lol - Intel R 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
how hard is it to change out a video card and/or add memory? and realistically, how much should i expect to spend on an upgrade for more memory (like another 256??) and/or a better vid card? should i do both? or if i can only afford to do one, which would you recommend?
one problem i'm having with the game i'm playing is it freezes or "sticks" every once in a while... just the picture, it doesn't always affect the sound.
i do know my cd-rw has an issue, but i think/hope it just needs to be cleaned. when i play a music cd, it sounds kinda like the cd is scratched, but i know it's not because when i play the cd in another player it's fine. any suggestions?
thanks in advance for all your help! :)

Start with the memory. That's the quickest, cheapest upgrade you can do. For your system you can get another stick of 512mb for $60 from crucial.com: http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartspecs.Asp?mtbpoid=71EF1EC6A5CA7304&WSMD=Dimension+2400+Series&WSPN=CT323834 . That system tops out at 2GB of RAM. Not sure if you have one stick or two in the machine now. My guess would be two 256MB sticks. Because you only have two slots for memory in that machine you can get one 512 and keep one of your 256s for a total of 768 or you can go for another combination.
Now the graphics card is a harder nut to crack. That's an integrated graphics card. You can still install a higher end card, but there's additional work to get it to be the primary controller.
Here's a thread that speaks directly about the controller you have as well as what one person had to do to make another controller work properly: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/post180812.html#
Good luck.

Here's a pretty straight-forward guide to installing an optical drive: http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/index.php/id;1949680970;fp;2;fpid;1294003727
In terms of your price point - you should be able to find the Radeon 9250 for around $100 or so, less on a good sale.

Actually, in Jo's case it was more than tags. It was permissions on the directory folders that got altered. And since there was no way to telnet/SSH in (Windows box) had to get the admin of the box to deal with it. I see that Jo has changed it and is now using WordPress (not my personal preference for blogging software but interesting way to lay it out) :)

I didn't check to see if this question was posted before and answered, so I apologize in advance for the duplication...
Help! I have a computer running Windows 2000 at home. Everything was running slow, and I thought I had picked something up when my cousin used my computer. So I installed the latest Norton to try and clean it up. BAD idea... I know can't do anything but get online. It gives me a "can not access" those files message when I try to open anything. No icons appear on my desktop anymore and I get a missing the desktop html file message as well.
I went to the Norton site and found instructions for what to do when this happens (as they seem to have had this error before) but all of the instructions are for Windows XP and I can't get through them in 2000. The major bummer is that I had just gotten an external drive to save my pictures onto, but had not yet backed them up. My bad, but I am really hoping they are now salveagable. I now have a lovely hand-me-down from my techie mother running XP, so I don't need to use the old one but I would like to get at the files.
Any ideas? Thanks!

I'm having some technical issues I wouldn't mind a bit of help with either.
Suddenly, I have extra tool bars, or at least, I think that's what they're called at the top of my screen. The ones I see that are most irritating, and I'm having trouble getting rid of are yellow boxes that offer links to other areas on the net. Now that I think of it, that's probably not called a tool bar...but I would like to get rid of it permanently. I'm also missing my http address bar when I open IE. I use MSN as my home page.
Somehow, although my pop up blockers seem to be on, I'm still getting a bunch of net offer pop ups as well.

Ok. I just want to make sure I'm understanding where you're at now: You're using another machine that has XP and you want to access the files that were on the 2000 machine? Is that machine still bootable? As for the external drive you should be able to just connect it to the new machine and access it. The pictures should be accessible by any image program like Gimp, Adobe Photo Album, etc.
You may still have some viruses on the 2000 machine. One way to help deal with that is to boot into safe mode with networking and visit http://housecall.trendmicro.com.
Instructions on how to boot into Safe Mode
To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Sounds like you have some spyware. First, avoid using IE. It is very easy to be infected regularly and your personal information can end up everywhere. If you can, use Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/). You can import your existing IE bookmarks easily and you'll rarely get spyware.
Now, to help get rid of the spyware download Ad-Aware Personal Edition (it's free) (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/), install it and run it (it will take time for it to do a full scan). Once done, download HiJackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip), unzip it, do a Scan and then Save the Log. Either post it here, PM it to me or email it to me at syrlinus@syrlinus.com. I can look at this to see if anything is left over from the spyware after the scan by Ad-Aware.
Let me know if you need clarification on anything. :)

The main problem is that after I installed Norton on the 2000 machine, I couldn't access any of my documents as the computer didn't recognize the path and I kept getting a missing desktop.html file message. I would like to salvage the pictures if at all possible but can't get at them.

It is as though the folders are there but they are locked. The only thing I can access on that computer now is IE to get online. It recognizes no other programs and neither the files nor the programs have recognized icons any longer. I get a "pth not found" error when I try to get at them, either from the desktop or from the file explorer.
It is really the oddest thing because all was swell before the Norton install, slow but swell. And the missing destop.html file thing is weird as it won't let me download or get a new one.

Are you getting a permissions error? Are you getting any error? Do you remember if you turned on encryption on Windows 2000? For the external drive, do you remember if you had any special software to access it or install it?

That should be fairly easy to fix. Right click on one, go to Open with, select what should open it and ensure the box "Always open with the selected application" is checked. That should help.
It is really the oddest thing because all was swell before the Norton install, slow but swell. And the missing destop.html file thing is weird as it won't let me download or get a new one.
-CS
I really dislike Nortons and McAfee as I find them both to be "bloatware" (they have more in them is really needed). I wonder if there is still a virus on that box that may be hidden from Norton's. I'd still recommend visiting http://housecall.trendmicro.com and letting them do a scan. No AV is 100% perfect and it's free to do.
For those looking for a decent AV that's free download Grisoft's Free AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) :)

What an awesome thread!! Can you help me find a better program for resizing my pictures for my gallery. My pics are under my documents, I then go to edit and when I do microsoft office picture manager comes up. The problem is I have five pics in my gallery and I tried to download another but I don't think I have enough space because it says the image is too large. Well, I edit it but in order for it to meet the requirements for size it is too small to even see. :( Thank you for your help

sthrnbelle -
Just a point of information: there are limits on the number of photos that can be added to galleries based on your membership level. The limit is in the amount of space. So using smaller files is the way to go.
You've got plenty of options. If price is no issue I recommend Photoshop, or on the lower end side Photoshop Elements.
There are a couple of free options as well: TheGIMP, which may not be for the faint of heart. Picasa is also free but not quite as robust.

DiaB, I was trying to help sthrnbelle earlier and she has only used .3MB of her gallery (only 5-6 pictures thus far) and she has Gold status (says 15-20 pictures). Do you know what the "assumed" size is for pictures for galleries?

You know, I don't. At one time the size limitations were posted on the membership level comparison chart, but Chris and/or Rhon changed that back to the approximate number of photos. The chart is available here: http://www.butch-femme.com/portal2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=43&Itemid=74
And based on the #s listed there, it would appear to be right on the money. EDITED: Er, no - that isn't right, I was reading the "Silver" column at 3-7 pics. d'Oh
Perhaps a flickr.com site linked from a signature is the way to go for sthrnbelle?

Yes, flickr rocks. Note though, the regular membership is free, but you're limited on transfer each month. I forget the limit off hand, but I think it's 20mb. So if you're taking high resolution photos that's going to go by quick.
Yeah, I'm all natural at the moment. "Enjoying" the rapid onset of the grey and all.
Ohh, shiny! I knew as soon as I got my new laptop my employer would close down our offices. I get to work from home now and I'll have the laptops sitting right next to each other like the dork I am.
PSST - Sounds like you need a new TV. ;)

Anyone a photo editor management genius? :|
Or rather, does anyone know of any photo editors or programs that would let me draw arrows or circle things on the photo itself...? I do trial prep investigation work and need some program (I know there are massive legal programs for this) but wondered if there was a photo editor or program that does the basics (arrows, circles, text) to highlight something in a photo.
Thanks so much for anyone's suggestions~

Good day, sweet genii
I was wondering whether anyone has a list of codes to use when creating keymaps in telnet applications (QVTerm)
For example, the code for [enter] is \015; the code for [tab] is \011.
I used to have a list but I accidentally cleared it out of my email last time I went over quota. (Got a bit overly ruthless I'm afraid)
Web searches have been fruitless. :(
I think the problem is that I am not aware of the correct terminology to search for.
Many thanks in advance,

Ursy, sounds like the vt100 (terminal type) keymaps needs to be adjusted. You may want to visit this site (http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/howlinuxworks/linux_hltext.html). I suspect that the command stty -a will display how things are set right now. Likely this is more of a terminal option than qvterm. There is this ESC Key code table (http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/howlinuxworks/linux_hlvt100.html) or try the command loadkeys (depends on the OS that is actually used -- you can usually find this out by typing uname -a)
Additionally, I gather this must be a university accounts as they are one of the last strongholds to use vt100 (old mainframe?) and the last ones to still use telnet, very poor in regards to security (when you log in, your password is sent in the clear and open meaning that any scriptkiddie sniffing the network -- and they are -- will get your password and thus, access to your email, etc.). I would suggest that you consider using SSH (or asking if there is an SSH server to log into instead). You can download putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) for free.
Let me know if this helps or if you have further questions.

Yep, you got it - I'm a librarian at a University!
Thanks a lot for your help - I will have a look at the links.
I was just after a list of codes because I like to set up my own keymaps for repetitive functions etc... we use telnet to access the library catalogue.

WAIS? I don't know - the only WAIS I know is the Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale but somehow I don't think that's what you're talking about!
It's ok, I don't need anything re-set - I can set up and load my own keymaps, I've just lost some of the codes to use. For example, I don't know anymore the keymap codes to use for the directional arrows... I can only remember the most commonly used ones such as \015 and \011, etc...

I haven't read the whole thread, so apologies if this is already covered, but HEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!
Annie suggested I post my problem here:
There is a huge message splashed across my entire desktop telling me that my computer is infected, giving my IP address, saying that I need spyware and that the risk is very high. If I click on it, it takes me to an add to buy spyware. I cannot get rid of this message. I deleted files, I scanned my computer, I uninstalled something called pest-trap (I think) that also appeared out of nowhere, I shutdown, re-booted. In additon there is a red ball with an x in the lower right tool bar that keeps popping up a message telling me my computer is infected, that windows recommends spyware detection, and that windows will download and install the latest spyware (which might be that pest-trap thing.) HELP! My puter seems to be working, but is it about to explode? And if not, how do i get rid of these annoying messages?
I run windows xp, have Norton anti-virus, but don't know anything about spyware, firewalls, etc. What should I do?
THANKYOU!

You will need to make a copy of these instructions because you have to disconnect from the internet to complete the fix. Either print them out or copy and paste them into Notepad.
Sounds like you've been infected heavily. One of the first things to run is HiJackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip). Download the file, unzip it and then do a Scan and Log. Send me the log or post it here (see the bottom of this post for details how to get a hold of me).
Preparation
1) Download the trial version of Ewido Anti-Malware from here (http://www.ewido.net/en/download/) and save it to your Desktop.
When the download has finished, locate ewido-setup.exe and double click it to begin installation.
** If you already have Ewido installed, update it and go to 2) **
In the 'Additional Options' window, uncheck: 'Install required for automatic updates (background guard)'.
When installation is complete, you will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
To do this:
1. Double click the Ewido Desktop icon.
2. In the main screen, on the left hand side, click Update.
3. In the following screen, click Start Update
A progress bar will show how the update is going. When it has finished updating, close it.
If you have problems with the updater, you can manually update Ewido. Click here (http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-full-current.exe), and save ewido-signatures-full-current.exe to your Desktop. All you need to do then is to double-click it, click Install and then, when it has finished, Close.
Ewido Anti-Malware is designed to be used to both scan for and remove malicious files and also to run alongside, but not replace, your existing anti-virus program to give an added layer of protection.
However, as the real-time protection may interfere with the fixing of your PC, this function will have been disabled as long as you followed the installation instructions correctly. At the end of the trial period, Ewido will revert to a stand-alone scanner which you can keep and update for free and use in a similar way to Ad-Aware SE Personal. (I've found recently that Ewido is better than Ad-Aware SE).
Should you wish to benefit from the real-time protection, you will need to upgrade the program. To do this, simply open it and click on the Buy now online button.
Then download SmitFraudFix (http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip) and unzip it in the C: drive.
2) You will need to know how to boot into Safe Mode.
You do this by:
1. Restarting your computer.
2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
4. Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
5. Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.
3) Log off from the internet and disconnect your modem cable for the duration of the fix.
Removal
1) Boot into Safe Mode.
2) Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Press "2" and then <ENTER> to start the cleaning process.
* Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
* You will be prompted "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? Press "Y" and then <ENTER>.
* The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to "Replace infected file ?" - press "Y" and then <ENTER>.
Your PC now needs to be rebooted. If this does not happen automatically, you will need to do so manually. Either way, your PC will need to be booted back INTO SAFE MODE. (go back to the Safe Mode instructions above)
3) Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all the files that you find there.
4) Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Temp and delete all the files that you find there. Do this for all Usernames on your system (replace username with the actual name of the users that log into the Windows system)
5) Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options and under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files...
Check the box to the left of 'Delete all offline content' and then click on OK.
6) Go to Start > Control Panel > Display.
Select the Desktop Tab, click on Customise Desktop... and then select the Web Tab.
Under Web pages: you should see a checked entry called Security info - or similar. Highlight this entry and then click the Delete button. Finally click OK > Apply > OK.
7) Empty the Recycle Bin.
8) Ensure that ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders are closed and then run Ewido.
* Click on Scanner and then Settings.
* Ensure that all the boxes are checked and that under What to scan?, "Scan every file" is selected and then click OK.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK.
* When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action with all infections" and also in the box next to "Create encrypted backup" then choose clean and click OK.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen called Save report - click it.
* Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
* This may take some time to run so let it run and do something else
You can now close Ewido Anti-Malware.
Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!
9) Reboot/Restart into Normal Mode.
10) Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Press "3" and then <ENTER> to delete the "Trusted Zone".
When prompted "Restore Trusted Zone ?", press "Y" and then <ENTER>.
* Please Note: If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection *
Once you've done all this, could you then post, PM me or email me (syrlinus@syrlinus.com) the following files/info:
* The Ewido log,
* The text file rapport.txt that will be found in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
For most, this file can be found by double-clicking My Computer and then Local Disk (C:)
* A description of how your PC is behaving.
This will likely fix it.
One last note/edit: if at all possible, avoid using Internet Explorer. Try a browser like Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/) as IE is the gateway for 75% of all spyware infections (the remaining portion comes from "phished" emails -- where people pretend to be others and get you to download unsafe software)

Ms Linus and DIB ,
would you be so kind and help me out here . I bought myself a new digital camera for Christmas . well , it's not for simple people , I am technically challenged . I didn't really use it until now .it's a Sony cybershot , I also have Kodak digital camera . Now my problem .
Sony came with some crappy Pixela software , I transferred pictures from Sony and set default folder to my pictures , however , they are not transferring there , only Kodak pictures go to that folder . it's there a way to combine these two to go to the same folder ? or delete some software ? I use Microsoft picture it , I don't stretch or anything like that my pics , I just crop and resize them or fix brightness . Sony pics came out beautifully with 7.2 megapixels , I just can't do anything with them .
I would really appreciate your help (f)

You know, I've used Photoshop Album SE (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=72&platform=Windows) to manage my pictures from both cameras (I have a Canon and a Fuji). I just copy my pictures over from my camera -- I open it like it was another drive and do a drag and drop into a directory on my external harddrive -- and then open Photoshop Album. It brings them up on the screen so I can see them, manage them, crop, adjust brightness and contrast and sharpness. And I find it very user friendly and great at being able to show pictures to other people visiting. :)

I would remove the pixela software if you're not using it. Go to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs and select it from there to remove. The Microsoft one is ok for general jpgs but a program like PhotoAlbum is good for digital pictures (it was designed specifically for it).
When it comes to putting pictures into the same folder, I do it manually because I don't trust the system to do it regularly. (bit old fashioned in that I don't trust Microsoft products).

Two questions for the bar, please:
1. Sometimes when my computer boots up and I everything is loaded, the computer decides to try to log on itself...meaning it initiates the dial up. I check for auto-dialers and I can't figure out why this happens...it will also happen if I disconnect manually from my isp connection. It disconnects and then *boom* trys to dial its bad self again...any advice?
2. I wondered if anyone knew a shareware or inexpensive software that would do case management...I need something to put in a case and then track hours, put notes in, maybe a scheduling device for calendaring events, and expenses. I know there are some heavy hitting legal programs like Summation and others, but I am looking for something that can be used easily and doesn't need all the bells and whistles.
Thanks in advance...you guys are an invaluable resource.

Hrmm... What do you use to connect? There may be an auto-detect option that will try to log on (a check box in preferences). Also, check the Properties of Network Neighbourhood. If it is a dialer, a program like Ewido might be of help.
As for the case management.. that's harder to find. Unless one works in the industry there may not be anything. You could use something like Excel (or OpenOffice version of Excell -- OpenOffice is open source and thus, no cost for personal use). Can you describe or give a list of features that you'd be looking for (must haves versus nice to haves).

Hmmmm. I checked and I couldn't find anything along the lines of maybe I had checked a box for that function. Any other thoughts...?
As far as the software, I am looking for something I can put a case (or project) in...be able to track it with a calendar function, and maybe have a place for notes that is attached the the case name. Excel and me....combustible combo...:s
I did see a softare package called Investigation Report (it is slick and fun) and I may just pony up to that.
I also wanted to throw out to the Bar the question of "to Dell or not to Dell". I need to get a laptop and although my desk top is a Dell...I bought it a few years ago when the customer service was horrid. I also had to return my original computer (lemon) and it took 2 months to get them to replace it...I spent 236 hours with tech support...I logged it and told them it would be cheaper to send me a new unit versus the tech hours...and finally a manager agreed. Most of my friends have bought Dells and they are happy with them...so I guess I am asking what brand of laptop would you suggest and if you would say Dell...is there a better model (latitude, inspiron, etc) that you would suggest.
Thanks agains Ms. Linus and DIAB...

Hrmm... have to find out what's dialing out. Can you open TaskManager and see what process starts when it "dials out"?
Given the specific usage you want, it sounds like you might need a security forum (not necessarily computer security but rather general police and investigative forum) as they would know all the different types of software available.
I've been a techie for ages and I actually just bought a Dell desktop. Now, I also purchased the 4 year service plan (because I was able to get it as a Partner to Dell I get 4 years for the price of 3). For me, the benefit isn't the service per say but the 1-business day turn-around for parts if anything fails. And after the 4 year period, I expect to be considering a new computer. That said, as far as laptops go, what is it you are going to be doing with it? Will it be desktop replacement or be used on the road? If on the road, will it need to take a beating (maybe consider the Panasonic Toughbook instead if it's a "rough" environment)? Will it use lots of multimedia or basic internet access and word processing?
Generally speaking, I find once you know what the purpose/role of the computer is going to be, you get a better idea of how much you can spend or should expect to spend.

MsLinus, Can you tell me if the Dell Laptop/Pocketbook (not sure what you call them) has an internal converter?
We are heading back to New Zealand soon, and I need to purchase a new laptopbefore we leave, but I need one that I can charge there without having to go spend lots of money on a converter (In NZ we have 240v power outlets, compared to 120v here). We've had small appliances blow up before when we tried to charge them, and I don't want it to happen with an expensive new laptop.
I spoke to a salesperson by phone a while ago, and he assured me that the new Dell laptop had an internal converter so I would be fine, but I don't really trust his assurance, since nobody else (salespeople at computer stores for instance) has been able to find proof of it. What do you think?
Do you know of ANY laptop that would have one?
Thanks in advance. :)

Okay, I am going to go with Dell and the extended service is a great idea...but here's what I need from it: I will use it for email/internet and basic Microsoft functions (word, pp, excel)...and I will need it to run a few heavier programs for court (like if I need to bring it in for a trial and need to do a presentation. I wnat it powerful enough to grow into it...it won't be a full second "office" but it will be used mostly away from the office. I want it to have a cd burner and dvd. Size isn't an issue and I am fine with a bigger unit. Wi-fi, burners, the most important...plus room to grow into. Doesn't have to be tough as it won't be exposed to too rough of treatment.
Lastly, what will I need to get as accessories so I can wi fi and sync up with my home computer?
Almost lastly, I'd like to make a contribution for all your help...whether it is here or someplace else...would you pm and let me know what sounds good to you. This fourm is so helpful in the name of community and what an incredible resource.

I'd look at either Dell's XPS M1710 or InspironTM 9400. I would max out the memory, get XP Pro and get 256MB NVidia card. Also, change the hard drive to a faster RPM one (most laptops get a standard 5400RPMs; going to at least 7200 would be good for presentations purposes). The larger display will be helpful during court room presentations but with the graphics card you can easily output to an external source. Both systems come with a free upgrade to 8x DVD/CDRom Burner. :)
Lastly, what will I need to get as accessories so I can wi fi and sync up with my home computer?
Best bet would be to get a wireless router. Most laptops come with built-in wireless today so the laptop can connect easily to that. The desktop can than use a "land line" to connect to the router (get a wireless that has 4 cable ports on it -- RJ45). Look at getting either a Linksys, D-Link or a NetGear. Best to stay with a brand name.
That said, what exactly would you be "sync'ing" up between the laptop and the desktop?

Ms Linus:
Any thoughts to the Dell 9400 vs. the 1705? I know they are related but wondered if you had any thoughts if one is better than the other in your experience. From what I researched, it looks as the 9400 is better.
Also a marketing tech friend said to me that laptops may be coming down in price in the next 6 months...any truth to that?
MsLinus
05-15-2006, 03:21 AM
Heh... everything comes down in price in 6 months. ;) It's pre-Christmas sales. :P
You mean the 1710? I would probably go for the 9400. While the 1710 has default 7200RPM harddrive and can have up to 4GB of memory (compared to a max of 2GB on the 9400), other than that, there doesn't appear to be a true advantage of having it over the 9400 particularly given the price difference. I would choose the 9400 because it meets the need.

Annie, most notebooks sold in the US will require some add-ons, but I found this little nugget that specifically references Dell Inspirons: http://pcworld.about.com/news/Aug222002id103293.htm
Which led me directly to Dell's website and this information: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1055420
I guess that's why laptop power cables come in two parts!

Throwing this out to anyone who has a suggestion.
I use a PC mutt for my work. It was orignially a Dell PIII 98SE 700MHZ. I replaced the motherboard, added 128 RAM to already 128, use soundblaster and MIDI with Cool Edit to record demos at home.
The HD is only 9.5 gb.
I also use this for other work and have Dreamweaver and Photoshop 7 point something in it. Also use it for interent but is not necessary because I have a 6gb laptop I use when travelling or on tour for internet etc...
Lately it's been crashing due to lack of memory. I am also not able to use my recording software- The Cool Edit's multitrack program.
Question is: Which do you think would help expand the memory to use my recording program? Adding 256 RAM or a new hard drive of over 20gigs? Also how much memory does IE or Mozilla use? If I took off internet on this computer would that make a significant difference for using Cool Edit?
I am not willing to buy a new PC because besides it costing a lot, I am going to switch to MAC G4 in about a year and use Digital Performer.
Thanks in advance. Control Alt + Delete is getting old....

The additional RAM should give you a boost, but I'm willing to bet you'll still have some problems. By most anyone's standards that machine is WELL past it's prime, but I understand your hesitancy in buying a new one.
I'd get as much RAM in there as you can. If you need storage you can always get an external hard drive to hook up to it. Also a good way to back up all your work.

Yeah I'd get a new PC but really am keeping an eye on G4s because it transfers analog tape without that ice cold digital sound that I find PCs tend to have and I am one of those stubborn analog freaks who won't record my final products on anything but 2" inch reel to reel tape. It's funny I guess that I will spend a fuckload on analog gear, headphones and tube amps but not on a PC.
Thanks for the suggestion MsLinus. I forgot to mention I tried XP about 6 months ago and it did run but hella slow like go do the dishes and maybe my file will open when I get back kinda slow:|

Good deal GB - just remember the RAM and the external drive really solve two separate issues. RAM should help with processing while the drive will help with storage.
I don't know what the maximum RAM that machine can take, but I'd find out and load it up.
Good luck.

Ok. So if the RAM doesn't do it then it's a different issue. It can handle up to 512 without any serious *known* problems for what I have researched and has two slots left. Much rather spend 25 or 30 bucks on RAM then if no good, I can make this a door stopper and get a G3 for now. lol :)
Thanks again!

I'd go for the RAM however, you need to keep in mind that if you're using Win98 there's only so much performance boost you're going to get.
1> Win98 was slow and doggy. Of course, it's Windows what else would you expect?
2> Win98 really didn't know what to do with memory above (if the neurons are working) 512mb so even if you put a gig in there, you've just wasted your money.
3> IE is a big, hoggy beast. Firefox is a bit more streamlined but you're still pushing it.
Chances are your best bet is going to be go to 512MB, wait to get the G4 and then when you do, turn that old machine into a Linux box.

It's not that hard and I don't know if MS will have it since they don't support Win98 anymore. Basically, install Windows 98 but when it askes you wher e you want to put the Operating System, instead of the default c:/windows make a new directory and call it c:/windows98 or something. The challenge can be that some applications look for windows specifically.
The other option would be to get a new hard drive and install the operating system there (say D:/windows).
The last option would be to boot from a floppy, rename the windows partition to oldwindows and then do a new installation. This is all dependent on how much space you have on the hard drive.

Okay, I've got a new Dell with XP and I've forgotten my Administrator password and can't access my profile. How the heck do I either recover the password, or do a system recovery without deleting the OS cause I don't have an XP backup disc. I just got the darn computer less than a month ago.
I did put a clue in for my password, and normally I would have stuck with what I normally do, but I don't remember what my brain was doing when I decided to change what I normally do for passwords, something which has worked for me for the last 10 years. I hate this. ms jeckals' hyde: Go to whatever page you want to be your home page and then into your TOOLS menu on the browser, select "Options" or "Internet Options". Under General you should find the option to make the current page your Home Page.
As for the MSN Messenger (I'm assuming that's what you mean): It's been so long since I had it enabled, but I seem to recall you could right click on it and select properties. On that page there should be something about "launch at startup" or similar language. If not, you'd have to run msconfig from the command line to keep it from running at startup.

I also just realized and thought that maybe this would be a good hint for others, that the reason I didn't see what I needed for my mouse is that I have windows xp and I have my control panel view set up to xp style. To see everything, sometimes it's easier to set the control to "classic" style and you can see all the options much easier that way. Then, when I'm done playing around with whatever it is I need to change, I change it back to XP style for the cleaner, nicer looking setup that xp gives me!
