Someone was filming it - for Smith....

I'll make some (t)s and see what their policy is regarding lecture series.

They may reproduce it for a fee.
Or they could have a strictly enforced intellectual property-type policy that forbids that.

:)

Thanks, Lady C. I really appreciate it! (y)

The parts that got to me about Allison's talk was the silence. The unspeakable. She gave examples of how people just want to fix the one who was abused. Family wanting the victim/survivor to take some pills for the depression, get some therapy, make the person all better... and just carry on.

I am a survivor and I can not be repackaged. Like Allison's broken coccyx, I wear a six inch scar on the back of my neck. Hairdressers have wanted to cover it up. I don't allow it. That scar is part of my survival.

To move on and to move forward takes courage and the will to survive. While I won't talk about the details of my trauma online for anyone can get on this site, I am not afraid to talk about any detail of it in person. I won't be silenced by other peoples' fears of what happened to me. I won't let other peoples' actions make me silent.

I was feeling so overwhelmed after her lecture, I could barely speak let alone socialize in a crowded restaurant, but sorry not to have met the butch/femme posse
Wow, how many places can you mix laughter, stories of horrific violence, wild applause and sympathetic (and empathetic) murmurs all in one room
It was intense, nu?

I will be live on the radio WXOJ SUnday and Monday, if you all have any ads or promos you want me to play, say, hey, send me a pm

Do you mean the NYC dance? From Northampton -- Rob and I are going, and Holliday, and another couple who don't write to the site much (Dapper1 and Beeee).

Dorothy Allison kept calling it her "bone" that reminded her of things; that nudged her if she wasn't speaking out. I think it's interesting that "Bone" is the name of the child protaganist of Bastard Out of Carolina, a roman a clef, so Bone is Allison herself. In a way she was saying that the tormented child she was reminds her not to be silent. It makes me wonder which came first -- the name of the character or the metaphor in her body.

Hi NYCfBBW! I wish you and BB where sitting in the audience with us.

Hi Jester -- I saw you and Mrs Jester across the room. Yes, it was intense! I thought some of the stories of the opening group of ex-prisoner women was heartbreaking too.

Wondering about our potential tag sale. I know some folks who are interested but most do not have the space to host such an event. I live in a condo so I can't either. I am willing to do some leg work and the like if anyone has a suitable space.

So.... anyone have space available? :D

If we can get a space, we just need to set a date and time, figure out how many folks are interested and how much, and what sort of stuff they may have, place an ad in the gazette, (they give you signs I believe, at least they used to..) and make sure we have plenty of refreshments for the weary workers. (we would also need to make sure that we have enough worker bees to do a fabulous clean up after the fact so that our host is not left with tag sale carnage) Of course, we could always make it a morning tag sale, late afternoon party sort of thing... just a thought.

back to work for me....

still funky even with this balmy weather and forgetful (more than usual)
sorry, I didn't post times - I will be on tomorrow Sunday 4-6 pm mostly playing local music
and then co-hosting on The Naked Truth Monday at 8 p.m. which is mostly political ranting and some music (mostly ranting)

I used to have a regular radio show when I lived in Davis, CA
It was called THE FRINGE www.kdvs.org
and I'm proud to say it has carried on with three succeeding hosts without me since 1999
you can check it out on the web if you are technical like that
I'm not +o(
but you can find a live stream of valleyfree radio if you do a search or try www.valleyfreeradio.org

I'm glad I went to hear Dorothy Allison but the intensity (and taking care of my high maintenance puppy) has nearly worn me out completely and my wild and crazy weekend plans are down to pajamas and popcorn and watching Mr and Mrs Smith and ruminating about our fetish for violence in this culture....but damn Angelina looks hot :$

it also made me examine somethings personally - specifically what my unspoken truths are -- and -- also how i may have (unintentionally & insiduously) contributed to the silencing of those I love due to my own fear of facing the horrific truth(s).

I, too, was moved to think about my unspoken truths and how I may have unwittingly or intentionally silenced those I love because of my fear. I also was thinking about the ways we do violence to one another all the time that may not cause the same kind of outward scarring Allison talked about, or leave the "bones" that serve to remind us to stay honest, to do the hard things, to speak out, but are nonetheless very damaging, albeit more insidious, forms of violence. I was thinking about the more subtle ones - the cruel and humiliating, devastating things we say to people we love and the (silent) perverted pleasure we take in the power that gives us; the ways we withhold EXACTLY what we know they want BECAUSE WE CAN; the ways we choose to pull away instead of draw near; the ways we lie - omit, or play with, the truth - F#%* with the minds of our partners', children, parents, friends; the way we stay with partners long after we know it's over because we're too scared to be alone; or invite someone in because their presence serves us in the moment even though we KNOW we aren't going to deliver on the promises we make to keep them there; the demeaning and disparaging way we talk about our lovers to friends, the way we punish our partners for being loving and kind - for "making" us feel vulnerable and dependent; the ways we project our shit onto people we love and then treat them as if our projections are true and they are as "BAD" as we have made them out to be. The mind-f#$%^&g violence that scars the soul and the heart even though there are no broken bones, no visible scars to show how violated we have been, AND no scars on US to show how much we have diminished or violated ourselves by doing harm to others. That's what's been on my mind - and how, at some point in my life, I have done every single one of these things to someone in the name of love. Not a fun place to visit, I can tell you that, but it's definitely another way I think about violence.

well, shit. i missed a fantastic and mind-blowing, perhaps even a mind-numbing lecture by dorothy allison the other night. i was all set to go....then i got called into work. :s

it sounds equally brilliantly inspiring and devestating--both the experience and the aftermath; what a whopper of a combination. i must admit, i am feeling it vicariously from the posts i've read. self reflection is such an important thing, and so often we push it aside to tend to other, more tangible personal or at least some form of "outer" business (sometimes even that belonging to other people)....and yet, lest we become a stuck slug, it's vital to our continued growth and development...

seems to me that what is often difficult is not just the act of self-reflection itself, but finding the lines berween that of taking responsibility and those of self-torment and flaggellation. so often we want to punish and blame ourselves (or each other) and i don't think there's any growth to be had in that, either.

must get to the bookstore and get some more DA.

on other notes--had a lovely dinner and cocktails with miss robin, mr bone, mr dapper, ms beeeee (or is it just dapper and beeee) and s1 last eve. fun was had by all, and it great to catch up a bit.

(d) and for the tini lovers--snap frost. mmmmmm. a hint of grape. crisp, not too sweet. however, it must be said that absolutely nothing compares to the tini tossings of our own lady c sparkle. (d)

I can't host the TAG SALE either, but I've got tons of stuff!

WHO WILL HOST OUR TAG SALE?

I nominate one of our house (not condo) dwellers! you know who you are!

*sigh* must stop procastinating and onto what i *should* be doing right now.

That would be an interesting question for Allison regarding which came first. I recall the character "Bone". I need to get my book back. It's on an indefinate loan to a good friend of mine in LA.

Miss Terious ~ Excellent Post. I agree. I think it is very difficult to look at those things we do, those subtle acts of manipulation, unkindness, untruthfullness - to look at ourselves honestly - to reflect upon those acts, own them and change our behaviour/patterns. I know in the past I, too, have perpetuated many of them (to my shame) and I have also experienced many of them, as well.

Thank you for your post, more to think about in the wake of that lecture.

Miss terious,

Thank you so much for your post, you brought up so many valid and intersting points. Wow, what a great post. I am sorry I missed this lecture it sounds like it was very thought provoking and intense. I was especially moved by what you wrote about how we silence others and how we are told to be silent and how powerful that is.

I have been shunned by a particular person right here in this community. It totally sucks becuase I have not been able to meet some people on this list because of one person who goes out of her way to isolate me from members of the noho butch femme community. I have been silent about this for way too long. I am not going to name the person, she knows who she is. I do want to say this, it really hurts and leaves me baffled bc i have no idea why this is happening and even when i asked privately I was not given an answer, just brushed aside as if i didnt even exist. I may be shunned again just for this post but hey what do I have to lose right? There are way too many times when I have just shut up and taken the higher road and perhaps thats what I should continue to do who knows.

My Mom <may she rest in peace and oh boy do i sure miss her> would say, turn the other cheek or some other biblical reference. I dont know, I have always stayed silent out of fear or becuse I didnt want to hurt someone or make them feel bad. Guess what, I FEEL PRETTY TERRIBLE, I have feelings too. I want to reach out to the butch femme community as well and that is pretty much impossible, is this person spreading some terrible lie, again I have no clue. Maybe it is better off that i don't know. I am not looking for a friendship or anything else from this person, just common courtesy and respect. Thats it. I know not everyone in this world gets along, heck I dont care for all the people I meet , I do however show them common courtesy and respect. I can say that with 110 % conviction. So please, before you judge a person, no matter what you have heard, at least make up your own mind about a person AFTER you have met them and get to know them . If they are a jerk afterall at least you made that decison on you own and not based on what others may have said. Thanks for listening to me, if you have read this far. I do hope to meet some of you in the future ....noho pride is may 5th, i hope to many of you there becuase i am not remaining silent anymore.

PS Nvcap....YES, I still have your ticket cant wait for the NYC butch femme weekendCool. Cool. I tried to pm you but you box was full. Very popular girl then.

I too liked many of the posts. As many of the people who know me off the boards I have had my own struggles with causing people harm. One of them being my younger sister. I was a very very mean older sibling and not even in a way that would lend people to think I knew my sister as a person. I was completely unaware of her as a person and emotionally unavailable. The other night I saw a movie about a deaf blind girl in India called Black. The deaf blind woman had a younger sister who was very resentful all the attention paid her disabled older sister. The younger sibling at her engagement dinner with her family and her betrothed's family airs her resentments toward her sister. The deaf blind sister had written this beautiful tribute to her sister for her interpreter to read. In it she talks about holding her younger sister for the first time and she said something to the effect of she knew beauty for the first time or her sister was her beauty. I was sobbing. I loved my sister, and I was 5.5 years older. By the time she came along I was already so damaged, that I just could not understand that she was a person. I could not see this until I was 17 or 18 years old when I realized she was as lonley as I was.

LK- sorry you are feeling like you are left out and treated unfairly. As someone who had been ostracized a lot I know what you are feeling. I was not planning to go to Pride but would if you wanted to hang out. I went for the first time in a decade last year and had a good time. Saw allot of people I had not seen in years.

MissTerious and LK and NVCap--thanks for your thoughtful, and thought provoking posts.

speaking for myself after some *self reflection*, i have to say that i often don't respond to the posts written by folks i don't know well on this thread. i guess that can lend itself to an impression of exclusion--but that is not my intention. i am a relatively shy person and no matter the scene (real time or here) i tend to stick with the folks i know best, even if i don't know them well at all!

as for being able to be a part of this community--we are not in junior high school. we are a bunch of grown ups and are fully capable of acting as such. some of us will know and like some of us better than others. and we will have fallings out. that's just the way it goes.

WowWow Lots Going On, eh?

I really really really believe strongly in:

RESPECT.
KINDNESS.
GENEROSITY.

if for some reason you're unable to extend those things to your fellow posters -(for whatever reasons)- I think it is only reasonable that you withdraw from the thread.

respect.
always.
and if you can't be respectful.
don't be here.
period.

NYCAP ~ for different reasons ~ your post about your little sister resonated with me....

Siblings are such funny things. such complicated things.
and such simple and beautiful things.
I can't imagine my life without mine. Though I could tell you stories - otherwise.........

My sister and my brother are the most dear, most beloved people in my life.
They always will be.
There is nothing in the world that can diminish their place in my life.

Partially because I am their big sister and that means I've got enormous ungodly bigger-than-my-whole-heart love for them

and partially just because.........

And yet, my greatest guilt and my greatest fear and my greatest shame comes from not being the big sister I think I should (should have) be (been).

Still to this day, knowing what i know, knowing my own capabilities, knowing how the world works, and what I can/could control, knowing a bit about karma and a bit about reality and settling somewhere comfortably in the optimistic-pragmatist category.........still...........in my heart..............there is pain and guilt where there is love for my siblings........

I would commit murder - and/or change-stop-rearrange the story of the world - to make them: not damaged. not hurt. not angry. not frustrated. not discouraged. not desperate. not desolate. not isolated. not marked in anyway...................................
I'd change the course of history to save my sister and my brother pain.

And yet, of course, I can't - I can't hold them safe and faraway from life.
And I can't stop the world ..........
And I can't share their stories - they belong to them..........

All I can do now - TODAY - is make sure they know how very very much I love them.

I can make sure I don't silence their experince - either intentionally or inadvertently -
I can make sure I listen.
I can make sure I am there. Now. (not later)
I can verbalize my love and my support.
and I can hope
.....................................for the best....................................................
.....................................for a life beyond survival.............................................
for all of us.

and this is one of the key things - i've thought about since the Allison lecture.

oh and btw, re: History and Respect and Paranoia and the lack of Intonation Audible Online....and all the rest of that shite:

fuck the drama, eh.
in the long run
and in the short run
it means nada.

focus on the things that bring you love and happiness.

I would suggest that we keep our personal squabbles, and peccadillos to ourselves. I am not at all interested in hearing or reading about the interpersonal transgressions of people on the thread, nameless or not. If there is private drama, pray do keep it "private" and deal with it appropriately i.e. not in a public forum. Because really, drama performed in front of an unsuspecting and involuntary audience is, well, just bad form and tiresome. In the long run, we are our own and best PR... so it serves one well to consider what one wants to project to the world.

Speaking of drama, (the good kind with actual professional actors, a stage, lights and such) Lady C Sparkle, brava! Nothing like a little Midsummer Night's Dream ... sort of a gay environmentalist play don't you think, what with all the fairies in the woods...

I'll see your highly relevant quote and raise you one:
Let's teach ourselves that honorable stop, not to outsport discretion.

Msmoxie... slainte to your pizza analogy. I suppose one can't always get the toppings one wants now can they.;) The ability to happily select and enjoy that which we like and carry on in the face of adversity (or anchovies and extra cheese as the case may be) is indeed an admirable trait.

Oh god the rumors that will fly like crazy!!!! Now we don't know for sure who will be unclothed or with whom....or why...

As for the Irish phrase... Gee the only thing that comes to my mind is:
"Ba maith liom an cota deas" Translation: I would like a nice coat!

Wow, interesting how threatened people are by the truth. I am aware of TOS violations just bringing to light my reality. Ms Moxie, I know you are not exclusionary. There are others on this list and I have enjoyed meeting you. As I said I wont be silenced anymore. Thats the end of the matter as far as I am concerned. My main point was really more on how ANY one person can exclude and isolate members of their own community and how that can be hurtful. I expected a backlash as another attempt at silencing. As far as trying to deal with the person directly , that obviously didnt work and yes i tried a few times privately, for the record. LK

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather. I personally hope it gets no hotter than this, well 79 degrees that is to say. If summer was like this throughout, I would be a happy (and far more pleasant Im sure) butch. (there is nothing about the phrase "hot and sweaty," no matter what circumstance one is applying it to, that I find even remotely appealing! LOL)

LOL.

I don't have an air conditioner and I almost never turn it on in the car. I like suffering in the heat. It's the Calif desert-loving martyr in me.

Does anyone know if thunderstorms are in the forecast? No, don't tell me. Yes, do tell me. No yes no yes. I'm SO AFRAID of thunderstorms. I hate lightning. At the first hint of a storm I either go to the downstairs at Haymarket, or to the meat section of Stop & Shlep, or Forbes Library mezzanine level. If it's at night I go into my basement.

LOL... hum reminds me of the "Hot Tomatoes" place that used to be where Paradiso is now. Think one has to be ancient to remember that though!

But ya, I prefer the phrase "cool and smooth" or even "cold and shivery" but that is coming from someone who whats to stay in New England in the winter and go to the Arctic Refuge in the summer! Really, if it is over 80 degress and anyone sees me out on the street ... melting....and whining (oh god not that!) feel free to offer a cold compress! LOL

Good thing you didn't live in Guam. When I was there the wind would blow so hard ("how hard did it blow S1?") ....ahem...it blew so hard that the palm trees bent so far down that the fronds were touching the ground..:| :| Guess you wouldn't be a typhoon fan Miss R.

accomodating, indeed you are. i knew you'd come around once you saw the inherent danger in your jaunty jest. besides, i'm quite certain the above-average fine young ballerinas (isn't that a band? oh no, that's the fine young cannibals. my bad. ) can choose their own adulators, and with a twirl, plie, and well timed high kick, send the old and unwanted straight to the orchestra pit and make it look like part of the routine.
saves the rest of us the trouble. i love those girls.

N--it IS killer in theory to be up at 5am, but since i normally wake at 545 what's the big diff..i've always loved the early am so it's a matter of making a routine of early to bed and early to rise, oh yeah...and getting to work on time. THAT is the truly difficult part.

Miss Robin--lookee lookee--i am getting over the plague of my gym phobia! i hope the dog park treated you well yesterday; i would have joined except i need to not overdo too much movement in a day. today i was up at 5, walked to the Y did class, walked to s's and then home, so i think i clocked about 3.5-4 miles plus class...and hmm. i DO really feel a bit of OWIE so am reconsidering my abs/yoga plan for the eve...i do have to function at work tomorrow. (hmm. it too much healthy living a reason to take a sick day?) I have fantasies of driving a sexy convertible too fast down a sundrenched open road instead of tending to the masses of "soaring throats" sprained ankles and gastrointestinal mishaps that will be my day until I get to go to the AIC performance in the eve. Mlle C., thank you again for the bid info for my freelance writing gig. That was so helpful.

1, S1, I hope your talk went over really well this evening. Have you ever done any brochure writing? I was offered a freelance job writing brochures (geared to prospective students) at a local college. They want an overall cost but I don't know how to estimate the length of time. The job requires talking to deans who don't necessarily agree with the marketing and communications dept, doing some indie research, condensing lots of info from various sources into bullets and pithy paragraphs, etc.

Aww gee thanks Lady CS.It was very nice to see you in the audience. I am glad that you enjoyed the performance. I like watching Amherst Ballet perform, I think there are several very talented dancers in the school. (they had a fabulous teacher for the past 5 years).

Hiya Northhampton!

So how many of you are going to Northhampton Pride that is comming up? My wife and I are going to be there. With a VAN load of baby queers. Including our mentees- the baby femme Im a mentor to, and the baby butch who is beginning the journey of exploring male pronouns and a male name. (hes not sure if the label Trans fits him, he still has a lot of exploring to do)

So, anyway, we are going to be in the parade, marching with True Colors. In matching Tshirts we decorated with our teens as well. So, in other words, I think that makes us stand out a bit.

If your are comming to the parade, festival, perhaps we can meet in real time?

Yes except Townsend can afford to smash his guitars. Mine is still intact.

Damon pulled a Babe Ruth. He's a clean shaven short haired NY Yankee.

Thanks for noting the "B". I'm not feeling well but am doing the best I can with an elevated sed rate of 136.:s I get a bit touchy when it's above 130.

I usually attend... Have generally made it a habit since the very first one when there were only about 75 people. Not quite as rah rah about the whole thing as I used to be though. Still, I am glad that it is not going down to that field where it felt like a big family party in someones back yard. :s

Is the femme float a happening thing by the way?

last i heard the float was a go. i like pride and am upset i can't be there..but i really must say i prefer the big backyard feeling of the field to the parking lot!

note to all--watch out for the nasty stomach ick germs! rampant! +o( as resident thread nurse, i'm putting the thread on high alert--orange. i finally succumbed, went home sick, and thanks to the best (l) ever, can now sip gingerale as i watch my newly repaired TV. i downgraded my cable 2 weeks ago and havent been able to turn the damn thing on since....and then comes 1S1 to the rescue, complete with ginger ale, movies and saltines *SWOON*

Personally, I liked the fair grounds when it was there. Some folks thought it felt like "marching out of town" ie kicking the queer folks out of town.:s Ridiculous I thought. It is where all the large outdoor events are held so why not us? Anyway... blah blah....

Hope you are feeling better soon woozy, I washed my hands as soon as I got home!

Sophisticated- yea I get the whole Losing the "Ra Ra" about it too- But I got to tell you I wield rainbow stickers, and view Pride anything with renewed vigor when I see how it sustaines these kids with a rare moment of self esteem boost. It takes me back- and reminds me of my beginnings when I first saw rainbow and equaled it to acceptance.

I will probably be sporting a rainbow boa. ANd, just to feel some continuity, a string of pearls, even with our painted up T-shirts. Fashionable? um, not! But its all about screaming "this is who I am and Im wonderful" and its good to have a place to do that.

Ah but of course. It is always "new" to those that haven't been there yet and support is always a good thing. I am also glad that they dont have to contend with the crack pots and nuts protesting on the sides on the street anymore. Years ago, there always used to be a gang of hooligan "christians" that would carry a black coffin about with a sign that said "We mourn the death of morals in Northampton" and all of that tired old "Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve" crap. The friendly Unitarians then made a big show of support (as these creeps used to set up right outside the Unitarian church) and the nasty coffin toaters slitherd back to where ever they rose from.

Not saying the day isn't a grand thing to celebrate. It just isn't like when I was a marshal (prior to "peacekeepers") and we had to be trained in self defense and keep an eye on the roofs of buildings! Thank goodness times have changed. Things feel a lot safer and open than they used to.

Plus I guess living here in Northampton one can get a bit complacent. Proclaiming ones ..whatever you want to call it gayness, queerness etc. almost gets the same reaction as if one was proclaiming ones height or hair color. ... Not like that in many parts of the country..... That is why I live here.

LOL as for wardrobe, I haven't a clue as to what I am wearing. I suppose it will depend upon the weather. :D

Hellooooooooooooo Alllllllllllllllllllll :D

I'm (finally) getting excited about Pride! Yay!!!

I know some of you will be Femme'n it up on/in the truck - I hope you have a brilliant time, we shall be cheering you on!

Shall we set a meeting point for out of towners and others who may wish to find us?

La Fiorentina again? Like last year?
We could each take turns doing hand-holds from there to where ever the group or groups are located.....How will we be identifiable? This is when we need NohoFemme and her superior organisational goddess*ness!

NYC Femme BBW & BostonButch ~ Looking forward to meeting you both!

Pearls ~ definitely find us, it will be a pleasure to meet you and your crew of enthusiastic young queers! :)

CK ~ you should definitely try to make it up! maybe if you hire that geezer, eh?

MsMox ~ are you doing the graduation party between Pride and Thonsey's gig?
Also it is .5Femme's Cinco de Mayo Feliz Cumpleanos (DF & I were thinking of planning a brunch for her) (t) (t) (t) me.

Ooo on that note - this evening: abs & yoga? 545-615 & then 630-730
??? What schedule are you working ??? Did you go to the 6am this morning?
I didn't :$ couldn't i tried.....:$

hey,

hate to sound so crampy (combination of cranky and grumpy lol) about Pride Day
but for me it's like a work day.... I am in charge of lots of little people *(not short, young)
and we hand out candy and mardi gras beads and my wife has family staying w/us and they have little people too (short, not young) LOL just kidding

anyway, it's a pain in the ass and I never get to just cruise around like in the old days in my leather vest wearing sunglasses and avoiding the crazy ex- g/f (geez, those were the days HA HA)

no, now Im a married soccer Mom/Daddy so come by and rescue me from my "booth duty" (look for a big Red Banner PRIDE AT WORK)
I think I will be assigned handing out SEIU pamphlets or some such nonsense, the Butch is never completely informed .....you guys know how it is...we're whipped and proud, right? 2-4-6-8 Femmes Rule, don't try to negotiate (that's my chant!)

if I sound like I'm complaining, or bitter? nah, just old and crampy
A tree just fell on our fence and I spent the day (trying to be) in butch glory with power saws and power tools and lots of Ben Gay :P
Happy Fuggin Pride Day butches and femmes
I will keep my eyes out for your hot pink float :P

I'm not much of a tea-drinker either --- which was met with looks askance in London.

Give me espresso or give me death...(something like that?)
By all rights I should be Italian - my proclivities are much more southern europe

Ya know, you've reminded me that I've not been up to that pub in G'field that has the live Irish music on Sundays since --- June/July (!!!!) --- we should all plan a trip up there sometime soon!

Yes, we will no doubt find you amongst the mountains of rainbow glitter and escapee feathers.
( i was once very nearly blinded in a noho-pride-float incident by a piece of metallic glitter -- i wandered around the fair grounds half-blind until some nice berkinstock-wearin' lespians helped remove the offending shrapnel )

ahhhh those were the days!!! :s

oh and i'm on the hunt for the lovely MM, is she working?

Eeeeeeeyouch! to the shrapnel. I was once fixing a friends car (no really, I was!) and I got a wee tiny metal sliver in my eye. I waited unitl 2 am when I could'nt stand it any longer and had D1 take me to the ER. Rather looked like a pirate for a week or so with a lovely eye patch!

Lady CS, just out of curiosity, do you camp as well? I know a place were I take folks who are into utterly civilized camping, the camp with comfort and ease crowd (not rugged at all and also sans little hooligans and beer swiggin types). I go there because it is very close to this great river that I love to kayak. Normally I prefer a more rustic experience, but this is good for a quick easy weekend getaway and the river is fabulous.

Fine dinners (grilled chicken, wild rice, asparagus?) with a nice wine served up by yours truely in the evenings and of course, Italian roast in the morning! There is of couse live music as well!

I think msmoxie and I might take a trip out there soon. It is but an hour away near Sturbridge. Trying to twist D1's arm but both kayaking and camping are new and scary to the D. LOL

If you are not the camping sort we can just plan to hit a river near by perhaps.

Just noticing in S1's post the use of "sans". I tend to use it too sometimes in English as well and am wondering about when French words in this case "sans" meaning "without" end up becoming commonly used in the American English (for example) to the extent that they are listed in American dictionaries? Does anyone think "absentia" will replace "sans" in the future? Given most words in American English and European languages are derived from Latin, I guess any word is possible to be intertwined from any of the romance languages.

I also have been pondering the use of slang where for example the word "awesome" has seemed to have lost it's actual literal meaning. :|

Thoughts?

I think my recent venture out to our local library where I got a library card for the first time, and my enjoyment with reading Shakespeare, without purchasing the books, has got me thinking a lot about the definition of words. Shakespeare used the word "sans" a lot.

Hi! Holliday, I'm glad you made it back safe and sound from Slut Night. You were SO missed at the dance and the brunch!

Nancy/Nvcap, now THAT was a surprise! Turning around and seeing you leaning against a column at a dance in NYC. You coulda said you were going! You're a butch-of-mystery, I guess. I hope you had a good time.

Frenchie, if you're reading our thread ... you must come up more often! It was a pleasure to chat and dance with you. We'll see you on Sat.

Undunn, the parade starts at noon, but if you're driving on or across Main St, make sure you get into town at least a half hour earlier. Keep your eye out for the Paradise City Femmes in a "float" driven by Rob.

Lady C., as far as meeting spots, Rob is manning a Toyota that's there to promote the dealership. Maybe we should meet at the Toyota display. Last year it was really crowded at La Fiorentina and it was in direct sun. The cars seem to be over towards the back entrance to Thorne's.

(Did you catch that Undunn and other out-of-towners? What do you think Layd C?)

S1 and Ms Moxie, I wish you were at the dance ... and Lady C and CK and GB and everyone.

GB, I'll get back to that language query of yours but I am about to be en absentia because I have a 6:30 client.

And a YIPPEE YI-O-KAI-AY (sp?) for BB and Jennifer and young Jacob coming to Pride. What a treat to have you all here!

Greetings teddybearbutch.

The place I was mentioning in my earlier post is a state park that is really so close to civilization that if you are a "real" camper.. it may not suit you. However, it is Wells State Park (http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/central/well.htm) It has a small lake and a few trails (and if you run out of anything it is 15 minutes from a strip mall!+o( )

You may want to check out the Mohawk State Forest. They have rustic cabins and tent camping and some great trails. To get more info on camping in MA try this link:

Alright...here is more info than you (and anyone else
coming for Noho Pride) could ever possibly need!

The only B-F specific thing I know about is the Femme
float in the parade (and the informal meet-up by the Toyota thingie--deets to follow? anyone?).

Northampton pride is Saturday, May 5th, from 12-5pm.
Any femmes interested in marching with the Paradise
City Femmes should arrive early at the march set-up
area (email me offlist for more info on that).

Thank you for posting the day's agenda. :)

We are very excited to see everybody! <:o)

1,S1

Actually, I do / or rather I have camped.
It's been 10years since my last camping adventure. OMG. that is an alarming thought.

I grew up in the Adirondacks and spent the better part of my childhood in our family "camps" (rustic cabins in the mountain/lake regions - no telephone, no electricity, gas lamps and wood stoves and outhouses!!! :|)

.... and I've done my fair share of trekking out in the woods with a gazillion bags and boxes and backbreaking paraphenalia (a girls gotta have STUFF, yanno).... put up tents, built fires, awoken to condensation (or outright rain) dripping on my head.... the whole dirty experience....

Its fun. for a couple of days (at most) - I like hot showers and clean clothes too much to do more than a couple of nights though -

But camping and kayaking sounds great! As soon as its warm(ish) enough to swim.

Is M'lady Moxie really up for camping???????????????????????????
Somehow.....(dont kill me darling-mox) but somehow :-* she doesn't strike me as a camping kinda gal...............:P

Ted ~ we'll keep you posted if a camping trip is on the books.

Mlle Robin ~ Meeting by the Toyota sounds good ~ seems as though someone will always be there to meet & greet. And yes the corner of Fiorentina was a major throroughfare - good idea!

Ahh Grand! Well the place I was thinking of has hot showers and the like. That would be a blast to kayak, camp, swim, have fires at night, great food and yes just for a weekend not a long trek.

Miss Robin

Hey. It was great seeing you all too. I have been busy with school and work and sometimes I do not know if I am going to make it to where I plan to go - so I am quiet about it. At the end of the night, I realized their were several Michigan Workers there. I did not recognize them indoors- not in the woods- and in more formal attire than out in Womyn's Land. I love seeing other worker's- I was sorry I did not recognize them sooner.

I had a good time. I danced with a very nice woman. :D And I hope to see you all at Pride. I will have worked the awake overnight and with be a bit sleep deprived. SHE of GOD-DES and SHE has a really amazing voice. I am not sure I will be there though. LK has a football game in Holyoke and while I not a big fan of football I like to show up for people. I have gone before and it is kind of cool.

N.

ps. I was bummed that Holliday was not at the Dance.:'(

pps. That turning around and seeing me leaning against a post where I am not expected is a bit of a signature experience for me. I am a bit like the game "Where's Waldo?'

The DPH is holding a seminar on my very special day entitled "ageing gracefully" :s
Maybe if we keep going to our "flotation class" our bums will age gracefully. (k)

Let's make a plan. YES! YES! It should involve pedis and tinis and fancy shoes. and maybe kayaking and camping, too. (maybe i can use my "holiday time" and stay an extra day:o |-) 8o| +o( )

speaking of fancy shoes, i bought 4 pairs of shoes the other day...it's ok, though, bc i threw out 12 or 13, and yes, they were all black (the tossed ones, that is) i got a great pair of linen platform peekaboo toe slingbacks. *NICE*. :D

<-----------from me, who's actually going to a Noho event! See you at Pride. :D

Sorry to be vague! You know how a car is parked in the middle of the mall, advertising the car brand? It's like that. There will be a shiny unused Toyota with signs and giveaways parked somewhere on the periphery of the parking lot in which the festivities are held. It looks like another display like the rest of them except there's a big car (or truck maybe).

Have you been to Noho Pride? I don't mean to be redundant if you have but this is the deal: Last year it was moved to the parking lot behind Thorne's because the field where it was held is being reconstructed. As the march ends, everyone follows the last people to the parking lot. Once there, there are booths of stuff, a stage and chairs, junk food, port-a-potties.

It's not that big. If we don't all spot one another at the march, look for the Toyota or for Rob. Rob works for Toyota so he's going to be there talking to the dykes who think they know everything about cars. I'll be looming around pretending to be Carol Marol (I think that's before your time).

big purple banners that say "Paradise City Femmes" so
we should be easy

I don't know why, but I'm totally cracking up now. I did go to Pride last year and now I am picturing how difficult it would be to miss a bright, shiny new Toyota in the middle of the parking lot behind Thornes. I'm silly sometimes; I prefer to know EXACTLY where I'm going.

Like, if Main Street is the x axis and Rte. 5 is the y axis--what are the PRECISE coordinates of Rob's Toyota? :|

I asked Rob and he said he brings the Toyota to the site early on Sat morning and they say where to put it. Last year Rob worked for Suburu and that car was near the back entrance to Thorne's so I'm guessing that's where it will be. It won't be dead center, nor probably near Fiorentina's where tons of people come in and out of the area. But then you can also start with us on the float and then we'll all be together!

I hope everyone enjoyed PRIDE today. I didn't attend as crowds tend to make me nervous :s but I hope it was a fun day :).

Good evening everyone. I'm new here. Some of you have already expressed your welcome (and I thank you), others, I hope to get to know you through your posts and perhaps in person (I tend to be weary of meeting people from the internet, but HAVE met a few). (y)

Is anyone getting you real chicken soup? The imaginary stuff has virtually no vitamins in it.

Jennifer and BB, I'm really appreciative that you two made a special trip up. Spending time with you both makes me wonder if I shouldn't pack up Mr. Bone and move back to NYC asap. And that boy or yours is a wonderful, sweet, adorable guy. Thank him for entertaining the poodles.

Boots13, what a terrific surprise to see you here and discover you do more than climb mountain peaks!

Miss Holliday, you were so missed at the rally, and at dinner last night. The Elevens wasn't the same without you.

Lady C., those shoes were to die for. It's always great to spend time with you.

Ms Moxie, Sophisticated1, Dapper1, Frenchie, Bren (in site absentia) -- I adore you all. Here's to lots more dinners and dancing!

GB, thank you for the photos of the femme float! I can't post photos because my gallery is screwed up (help ticket sent) but you should send in some.

Undunn, thanks for showing up for dinner with you really nice CT folks! It was nice to chat.

I'll have to look at the pics I took and see which ones are of B-F members and get consent then I can post some. I think I got some of you and STB by yourselves :)

BB and Jennifer, it was wonderful to meet finally! Hope you enjoyed yourselves. And, it was nice to meet the rest of you at Mama's, too! Always a good thing to put faces and sitenames together--if I could remember everyone's names, I'd list them, but uh, names just are not my forte, so, we all know who we are....apologies.

To the ill folks, GB and Holliday--get well now and enjoy the pretty day! that hunam dude delivers yanno. just a phonecall away. i love the udon noodles with chicken and chinese vegetables, and also the parsley dumplings....mmmm mmmm...and always get it when i feel ickypoo.

S1 and GB and Mr Bone--those femmes on the float sure were lucky to have you accompanying them! *swoon*

I'm afraid mine is from the ESR which E'd some more 8o| and not the cold going around. I did however manage to miss getting sick on a nearby toddler and am amazed that I missed my Doc Martins altogether. I'll stop there. It's too early. Water and tylenol is my friend today.:$

It was fun with S1, STB and all the femmes with the float. :)

OOOOOMY Good Morning After Gay Day All!!!!! (c)

Sistah and I were just recounting our tales from last night! She managed to pull the only straight boy in the joint! :D But personally, I'd question his "straightness", he was awfully well presented! AND a good dancer!!!

NYC Femme BBW & BB it was an absolute pleasure to meet you - I wish I had had some more time to sit down and chat - but I'm sure it will be the first of many meet ups and I hope you both have a very relaxing Sunday - whereever you land! :)

And to the other new folks/outta towners I met yesterday at the dinner and the Elevens~ it was a pleasure as well!
Frenchie you're a great dancer! Our Seattle friend (*i don't know if you have a screen name here) I hope you have a great rest of your travels!

Mlle Robin ~ You looked fabulous as always I loved the LBD ~ tres chic dahling (k)! and it twas indeed a great evening, thank you for organizing the dinner ~ the Elevens was excellent again this year!!! STB! You were dancing too! I saw it!!! :D

EVERYONE was dancing(z)(x)(z) YAY!
I love it when everyone is out on the dance floor!

MzMoxie (k) I'm so glad our paths collided towards the end of the day and through the early evening! Our graduating friend was well trollied by the time I left to go to the Elevens at half nine! :D As it should be. I also think she was in bed before 10pm. Again - as it should be!

Chancie ~ How did I not get in a dance with you :s It was excellent to see you throughout the day & evening, I have absolute Insta-Smile when I see you!! :D

1,S1 & Dapper ~ So fab to chat with you both throughout the day! I snapped a cute picture of the two of your conspiring about something! ......... and speaking of photographs............Dapper where do all those photographs end up??? You're like the papparazzi......I think you're actually a secret undercover spy, I just can't figure out what your mission is yet!
1,S1 ~ (b) <----------- for scoring me a chair when i was on the brink of whining.

Happy Post Pride Day Everyone

It sounds as though fun was had by all, except perhaps for a few unfortunate illnesses. Hope all the "under the weathers" are soon feeling in tip top shape.

Was fun to meet the new folks, wish I had more time to actually socialize in the evening but alas, I did not. Hope all of the visitors had a grand time and got home safely.

The foxymsmoxie you were missed during the day! Glad you could help wind up the afternoon with us. Next year I am going to write you a get out work free note!!

LadyCS, it was my pleasure to be sure. :D

STB & Miss Robin fab to see you both and go for the brief little ride down the street. I think we need a longer parade route!

GB Ever think you would be one of the bookends in the cab on the femme float? Not a bad gig no?

I am currently conjuring up a float for next year. I know the gauntlet was thrown down for the butches to step up and prepare a butch float, but I think I might leave that to another industrious butch. I am already committed to a Celtic float. ;) (gathering step dancers, musicians and Celts of all sorts as we speak) 8-)...humm... wonder how many femmes are into butches in kilts?

Have a good rest of the weekend all

LOL
Tin whistle? Cool.

Yes, well there are some traditions that might be well worth changing up a wee bit! Not sure if I would be into the itchiness OR the wind factor. :| As I recall, there were some good breezes blowing around yesterday and I am SO NOT the exhibitionist sort! LOL Still, I am sure there are some hardy Celtic butches who might feel differently. I'll let them sport the kilts (well....unless I find something handsome & fetching at the Scottish Festival coming up soon at Look Park! LOL) I think D1 has more claim to a kilt than I do. I vote for a kilt for D1!!

It was nice to say Hello to many of you at the Pride thingy. I planned to go dancing after LK's football game, but working the awake overnight takes it out of me. Oooooo Oooooo Move Here! Move Here! :D :D :D

.....ya know its funny, every once in awhile i start pining for city life again - i actually start missing public transport (and the time i got to read or daydream on it), and busy streets and a gazillion things to do at any time and 24hour anything you need, and the newest hottest shoes FIRST :D....

....but then i go to NYC or Boston or LA or DC with work...and the thrill of all of that wears off in about 48hours and i long for wee-little Noho with her comparatively quiet streets (especially in the early a.m.) and i realize there are a gazillion things to do here and that there is precious little i need at all hours of the day/night and SHOES ....well....i can always manage to find a new pair of shoes to drool over

I'm feeling almost inspired to espouse all the fabulous things about our town...

I feel its really unique in that Noho has many of the benefits of an urban environment: .....................independent cinema, high-end restaurants of every shade and variety, boutiquey retail, festivals, top-notch galleries & museums, top of their game working artists and world class music, a catrillion queers, organic grocers -selling direct from their local farms...........

and we get that cultural package in a beautiful valley/small town setting - with a pretty damn low crime rate, and a low unemployment rate - with beautiful rivers and lakes and forest walks within moments of downtown and even more stunning locales a short drive away....

we're 90min from Boston and a little over 3hours to NYC....we're 90min from the Berkshires and all the fancyshcmancy arts there ....and a little over 3hours to Ptown on the Cape....

personally, everytime i start feeling wanderlust and city-envy ~ i count my blessings here and i think about how much & why i missed it when i was cranky and oversaturated with urban life....................

Yes, early birds indeed. Saturdays are better than Sundays I hear and early morning to no later than 2pm I hear are the "best times."

Location? Well, we (rather D1) managed to get the very large parking lot on Pleasant Street right outside of DPH (close to divas on the other side of the street where the Florence Savings Bank ATM is ...Oh hey, that is a plus I hadn't thought of!) Anyway D1 just has to let the landlord know when we want it as there are other things he has planned for the space as well.

Okay Holliday, I have you down for a Saturday, no change making, no hefting of furniture.:D

So other folks with stuff to get rid of.....Times a wastin... If anyone else is interested in participating, please let me know. I would like to be able to let D1 know by the end of the week so we can keep the landlord happy.

and we get that cultural package in a beautiful valley/small town setting - with a pretty damn low crime rate, and a low unemployment rate - with beautiful rivers and lakes and forest walks within moments of downtown and even more stunning locales a short drive away....

we're 90min from Boston and a little over 3hours to NYC....we're 90min from the Berkshires and all the fancyshcmancy arts there ....and a little over 3hours to Ptown on the Cape....

personally, everytime i start feeling wanderlust and city-envy ~ i count my blessings here and i think about how much & why i missed it when i was cranky and oversaturated with urban life....................

what's funny about me and hunan is i don't like most of their food. occasionally the chicken and broc is yummy, but really, i like their noodles/soups.
now that ichiban and panda are gone, :'( i tend to do teapot or osaka. i first fell for the noodles/soups at hunan out of sheer laziness--they have the only parking lot around, and what's the point in pick up if you have to circle for 30 min and walk 3 blocks if you want your asian soup for the don't feel well purposes of clearing the miserably clogged sinuses?! then you're cranky and hungry and clogged--eeew. bad combo.

however, miss r and mr bone introduced me to the great wall--YUM--fantabulous.

Unn--I would like to announce that you cannot blame me for your cold! Unless, of course, it traveled really quickly between the morning's marchers and onto you. But that seems unlikely, no?

NYCFemmeBBW--You're funny. Maybe we should do noodle bowls at Hunan Gourmet pre-hot tubbing, just so you'll know what I've been whining about. :) MsMoxie is right--it's all about the parsley dumpling ones!

Is anyone going to see Les Nubians, french women singers, at the Academy tonight? If so, look for me and Rob.

I saw it!!! :D

Frenchie is a wonderful dancer! The Seattle friend is Boots13 on the site. Rob and I had her over for dinner last night. What a gracious and interesting butch! It's refreshing to meet people from the site and find they're sane and down-to-earth and have interesting productive lives and actually look like, or better, than their photos! ;)

It took me a moment with "LBD" above. I was thinking VPL :| -- no never! Then aha, it sunk in -- Little Black Dress. Thank you! I must boost my vanity reading beyond the Harper's Bazaar Mister Bone accidently subscribed to thinking he was resubscribing to Harper's.

Feel better to the sick folks! Holliday, you sounded awful when I called -- I'm glad you went to the doctor.

Ms Moxie, I'm glad you like Great Wall. Let's go again.

Even though I have never been to Hunan Gourmet, I still felt a pang of sadness to read that it is closed :'(

Lol! I love your emotional investment in our queer little piece of the planet. :) You and BB always have a place to stay when you come to visit, and a pre-arranged busy social calendar.

Location? Well, we (rather D1) managed to get the very large parking lot on Pleasant Street right outside of DPH.

What a score! By the way, there's a fabulous photo of Dapper1 and Beeee in today's gallery on the site (tmbyfem posted it). I have to tell Beeee about it. My daughter might have some things for the sale. She'll leave them here so whichever date works. Having just had a yard sale last summer I can that yes, Sat, 10am - 2pm is best. People show up as soon as you arrive with your stuff and start bugging you though, so it's best to price it or have an idea of price before you get there.

A little over 3 hours to NYC?? Hmmm ... someone needs to be Driving Miss Lady. If you take the Merrit Pkwy to the Cross County and go down the Westside Hwy you can get there in 2 1/2 hrs max. But, yes, Noho has all these things going for it and a thriving b/f community!

hey there, if you have your pics on a cd or on your computer digitally, you can go to shutterfly.com and set up a free account. That's what I do with mine. Then you can share them with who ever you want to.

GORGEOUS day (again) today! summer is almost here!
i have freckles and a sunburn to prove it! i was actually glad to be inside at work today because it seems spf 30 does not seem to do the trick anymore:s

anyway--s1 and i saw a great movie this week--go check out FRACTURE. Hopkins, as always, is simply brilliant.

Miss R--how were les nubians?

what i really want to know is this:

News From D1 on the Tag Sale Location:

"BAD NEWS: The workers will be here on Fridays and Saturdays for three weeks of June
June 1 -- The lot will be dug up.
June 8 -- The lot will be paved.
June 15 -- The lot will be black-topped and lined. The next week we'll have a slick new lot."

So we need to plan accordingly. Looks like after June 15th. Gives us more time to gather all the stuff we want to get rid of. (Though but that time of the summer I may need my on personal drink server and fan waver :s )

anyway--s1 and i saw a great movie this week--go check out FRACTURE. Hopkins, as always, is simply brilliant.

Miss R--how were les nubians?
!

Les Nubians were dreadful. The band/sound/singing/dresses/songs were all awful. Rob and I left after five songs. I like concerts at the Academy so I thought I'd give it a try. Sonic Youth were great there. Before the show started, the guy who owns Dynamite Records spun records and people were dancing in the aisles. That was cool.

I love Hopkins. We're overdue for a movie. Thanks for the recommendation.

I had a clear-out-the-ex yard sale last summer, but I'm sure I could come up with more stuff. My daughter is having one this Sat because she's going back to college (thank god) next Wed. The Bone and I are driving her down to NYC. Coincidentally, my second oldest friend from LA will be in the city with his family (4 kids) on Wed so I'm taking Theo out of school and we're having a double family date.

Where's the sun?

Did anyone see Ms CK at Eleven's with the shaved head? :D Very nice! -- if you're reading from the Berkshires, CK!

Ok lets make a plan for kayaking, the weather has been perfect for it. Anyone else thtas intereted please let me know. I won 2 free kayak rentals from EMS at the Women's Fund Gala in February so if anyone needs to use the rental I would be happy to give you the rental as I own my own kayak. Sorry we didnt get to see you lady C, we will have to do iced coffee soon : ) Email me offlist with your number and lets see if we can connect. I am sure Maria woiuld love to meet you.

My classes are playign softball today and it is so humid, I am certainly getting my workout. The benefits of being a PE/Health teacher are amazing. What other job do you get paid to have fun <smile> I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the nice weather. I hear there may be a thunderstorm later this evening. I love thunderstorms.

Ms.Moxie and anyone else who would like to get together for dinner with Maria and me give me a shout out. We would love to connect.

Hello from the (ridiculously humidandhot) state of Maryland, everybody! Anybody want a souvenir from our nation's capitol? A wee keychain snowglobe, perhaps? ;)

Miss Robin--Cold is 90% done and gone. Runny nose, congestion, and coughing fits remain. However, part of that is very likely the two chihuahuas and three cats I'm currently boarding with! I can't believe Les Nubians was no good...their music is fantastic! On my drive today I passed a billboard advertising a show with Gwen Stefani, Akon, and Lady Sovereign. That strikes me as an odd combination.

S1--Thanks for the update on the tag sale location. Clearly the best way to keep cool would be to hijack an ice cream truck. Mmm... (au) :| ^o) :| :| (i) (6) (y) It's already ice cream truck season by my house. The damn thing plays musak Chopin (I think) when it drives by...pretty soon it's gonna trigger a Pavlovian response. Oh Miss Holliday, where on earth are you?! That's totally a weird combo with Gwen Stefani. I just saw that the White Stripes are playing in Ct in July. Rob and I might go. I love them. I also saw somewhere that you're an Amy Winehouse fan. I love her!

You all have been VERY busy in here. How was everyones' Pride. Thankfully, I was able to make the night time activities.

Soooo Fun!!

I miss you all, call me sometime. And those of you with cars... I don't know why you haven't made your reservations to Fantasy Island...

Its motorcycle season again. Yeah. Anyone out there want to hit the road with me. I have quite a few nice routes that I know of. Any femmes that don't mind riding on back or in the side car are welcome. It is true what they say when you ride a motorcycle "you are in the environment, and scenery not just looking at it" Spring smells wonderful, and the wind feels soft and sweat.

Speaking of rock stars, did anyone catch a glimpse of the Dalai Lama? Did anyone see the pagentry around Noho the last couple days? The robes, and flags, and archway -- gorgeous!

Are you winding down your teaching year? I'm exhausted too (see above). Yesterday I was at my desk from morning to late night finishing an overdue job and gather up evidence I'm expected to give to the state because my tax return was "randomly" audited. LOL Miss R, I think that there are more "scary people" walking around the streets on a typical day in Northampton than there are "scary critters" in the forest. I'd rather have an encounter with a raccoon or fox or black bear any day than to have a go round with some of the more intentionally malicious/crazy/ unscrupulous and or unsavory humans that are out there :|.

and then as we nearly collapse on the street we hear a voice from god (or her (t)) saying "ummmm hello? what are you DOING?"

:|:o:|:o:|:o:|:o:|

and THEN a granny pops out her front door and she says all sweetly:
"Are you two running from the bear?"
"um yes granny, we were running from the 400lb bear, how kind of you to enquire? have you per chance called animal control?"
"oh no" says she "i think it had a collar on - so it must be fine"

:| <-----------------me just plain bewildered, "WHAT? like a circus bear???? what?"

and then a lady with her lawn mower pops up and says
"oh yes there is a bear, and her cubs are up in a tree just back here - do you want to come see???"
terribly blase like.... (but then i might be if i had a lawn mower)

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't want to see! We've seen quite enough, quite close enough TYVM"

AND THEN.............. ('cause it wouldn't be the same if it just ended there)

we see two very small children on their wee little bikes with training wheels pedaling up so we have to run back up the ravine and on to the path to intercept the children who have by now discarded their bikes and are going off-piste in to the woods TO FIND THE BEAR!!!!

DF and I scream fiercly like wild banshees at the children and the children look terrified
(not of the bear mind........... of us.)

Idjit Mother of children pedals up some half a mile behind and says jovially
"did you find the bear???"
"Yes idiot mother (who happens to be a colleague) - THAT Bear is a Momma Bear with two cubs and is aggressively protecting this particular section of path"
- mother and children look skeptical and begin to pedal forward when the Momma Bear comes lumbering out at full speed - girl child drops her bike and panics - mother decides perhaps backing up would be wise - just as Bear Malls Girls Bike (a little) :|and then returns to the cubs.... Idiot Human Mother backs children up further............

We stay and wave people back the other way - and wait for the arrival of Northampton's Finest - who duly stand about and scratch their heads ....

But then we got to see Momma Bear sheperd her two babies cross the path!!!!!!
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
(the cubs are smaller than a pair of miniature poodles <---that analogy is por vous Mlle)

And then DF and i promptly turned on our heels and trotted back from wence we came - still shaking, laughing a bit hysterically and utterly astounded!!!!!

LOL OH MY! Lady C Sparkle! Very cool. You get to have all the fun! LOL I wish I had been there, I actually could have saved you your olympic dash over the river and through the woods! (Though it sounds like a great cardiac workout! ;) )

But really Miss, and others, rule #1 never run away from a bear !! You would have to be able to run over 35 miles an hour to have that work for you. Plus running away my trigger a chase response.... Backing away slowly, while always facing the bear and speaking in a calm voice ( 8-) hate to say it, but the only thing that typically makes the high pitched squealy noises in a bears world is ... well, prey... :| )

The old saying "never get between a mother bear and her cubs" is really more accurate for grizzly bears not black bears. (Not that I am suggesting that one runs out and does it! lol) But really, mother black bears send their cubs up a tree in the face of danger. They are far more likely to join them up there than to protectively face down a human. I have seen mother bears run like hell from people leaving their cubs to scamper up the nearest tree on their own.

Black bears typically only get aggressive with people when they have become habituated to them typically by some idiot feeding them or feeding other animals outside. (almost everything is bear food!) They are eating machines (80% vegetarian mind you) If they have lost their natural fear of humans, they can get insistant about getting bird food pet food etc.

That walk about they do around the area where their cubs are up a tree is just to make sure it is safe for the cubs to come down and be on their way. She will not call to them if she senses danger. But she is also not looking to take on challengers to protect her young. It is just not thier MO. The fact that she brought them out and went on thier way with you ladies present, is proof that these bears are used to humans being around.

Giving them a little room to be on their way, not following them, not trying to snap a photo (and not turning and running like hell lol) is really the best way to co-exist with a black bear in your path. No police, FBI, dog catchers, or Marlin Perkins needed lol! :)

The investigation of the bike is pretty expected. The thing is, they have absolutely pitiful eyesight, so they will usually try to get up close to be able to see what the heck they are looking at. It is the same for the staring straight at you stuff. She could probably barely see you and was trying her best to suss you out. (I have a pic of a huge bear sniffing D1's camera tripod when we were on our bear trip last year. It is just curiosity, not ferocity)

I have had black bears "charge me" but it is a "bluff charge." Blustery, slapping the ground, taking off at a run towards me. This is NOT how they would attack someone in the very unlikely chance that they would. But many people think oh my god an aggressive bear, it is going to kill me, run for the hills!

I think the mother of the kids was pretty irresponsible!! Sounds like they need to go to one of my black bear presentations where they would hear that following a black bear is, umm, rather a bad idea. Not because they are aggressive or aggressivley defend their cubs, but because you are more likely to scare the heck out of them and that is when they might perhaps become dangerous.

LOL Circus bear???:D There are over 2000 bears in western MA. Many of the bears in our region have radio collars. ...why that would make them "fine" is beyond me! It is not like bears involved in research are tame and signed up for the job!

I am glad you survived your bear encounter Lady CS!! I haven't had an encounter with a bear yet this year... (b) Slainte to you and D Faux and your new bear story!

Soooo this fine evening my darling GirlyGirlDonnie Faux and I embarked on our power*walk up the bike path ...... and we're chatting and giggling and her phone rings and she's squinting at it and i'm looking up and walking and thinking .......

oooooo look .... not even 10 feet away emerging from the woods..................

cute black (&) poking its nose out ..................
awwwwwwwwwwwwwww
cute fluffy black (&) lumbering on to the path ...........
awwwwwwwwwww
cute fluffy GIANT black .......................

BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lumbering towards us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(DF completely oblivious saying) ...."wha?wha?wha?"

and i grab her arm and start running and screaming
"GET OFF THE PATH GET OFF THE PATH GET OFF THE PATH"
and we dive through the underbrush and leap across a ravine and land in the cul de sac running like olympic sprinters ... and she's squeezing her (t) and the speaker phone gets turned on and our friend on the other end hears:

SCREAMS, HIGH PITCHED GIRLY SQUEALING, PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT, OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO OMG OMG OMG OMG PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT PANT
and then as we nearly collapse on the street we hear a voice from god (or her (t)) saying "ummmm hello? what are you DOING?"

:| <------------------- feel like i'm in an episode of the twilight zone at this point

And So ~ my dear friends was MY excitement for the evening.

Okay this has got to be the funniest post i have ever read on this thread (or any other on this site). I am still totally laughing my ass off and could feel the entire thing as you described it - felt my own adrenalin rush with each new piece of the experience. SOOOO FUNNY _ Thank you for the best time i've had all day (despite the years this may have taken off your life).

Well I'm pleased to give you all a good laugh last night/this a.m. :$ .....:)..... :D

DF and I were still laughing this morning at 6am AQ class - we practiced the Bear-Sprint (run really fast whilst flailing arms in the air and screaching).

Clearly! I am not the person to have along in wild animal expeditions..... I feel the same way about deep-sea diving, really --- if i saw a shark i would be hard-pressed not to underwater scream and paddle away as fast as humanly possible!!!! :$

Well 1,S1 ~ you should drop flyers on your black bear workshop in to the mailboxes of all those houses on the cul de sacs around the bike path - they were all so blase about it "oh yes we have bears tra-lalalalalala"

And the collars!!!! Ooooooo!!!! (I was SO confused) collar? like a ruff? or like a leather bear? :| (just WAIT til I tell tbear!!!!)
