after the recent election down here, I soooo want and need to move to Canada.... I am embarrassed by the stupidity of the majority of Amerks and feel Canada is far more progressive than the US would EVER dare to be.... I fear this country will regress back to some dark age where queer Amerks like me will be targeted with hate....

I am right there with ya...I think we have taken outselves back to the 50's...and soon all will be the epic magnitude of the mistake the American people just made....if indeed things were not rigged.
Its really cold in Canada, what about Mexico?

Tu y nosotros estamos hayi! LOL (We're there)
Yes, Mexico isn't progressive, but it's a heck of alot cheaper! I could retire now! AND yes Apoc...much warmer and with Beaches.
But for those interested in Canada...it takes 1-2years to make the move here is a link http://www.barbarafindlay.com/ for a lawyer up there that works with GLBT immigration. She also has a link on her sight for you to calculate your points to see if you would even qualify to get on the waiting list.

Mexico seria mas facil para nosotras, hablamos el idioma, Y es caliene ahi...Yo creo que Nashville is muy frio. Podriamos pretender que somos de algun lugar otro de los Estados Unidos...
Canada is too damn cold, In a Mexican resort town we could get good jobs since we are fully bilingual. We live in Middle TN now, and its pretty homophobic here too! How about Costa Rica? I lived there the first year of my life! Its way gay friendly.

Hey now! I moved from California to Vancouver in June, and it's not THAT cold here. :) Besides, you get to enjoy fun things like gay marriages and Tim Horton's doughnuts.
But if anyone is serious, http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.html is the official Canadian Immigration website. And DON'T try to get Barbara Findlay as a lawyer. Butchbiscuit and I had two meeting with her, and she didn't show up for either of them. We're using Robert Hughes (wouldn't it be cool if his name was Robert Smith though?) at www.smith-hughes.com and we love him.
~Andrea, actually going through with immigration...

I can't believe that Bush won. :@ This country has taken a big step backwards in my opinion. I just can't believe that people actually voted for Bush. This country needed a change but we will have to wait four more years. But I fear that we as a community are in some serious danger within the next four years. The republicans have control of the house and the senate...so i have heard on the news, and that spells trouble for the gay and lesbian community. I live in ohio the most homophobic state in my opinion,Issue 1 that banned same sex marriage passed by a large margin. I guess i need to think about moving to Canada myself. :(

We should've expected this backlash....look at eleven states that voted for Gay Marriage bans. Since Republicans link Gay Marriage with the Democratic party, they voted their 'consciences, religious beliefs' and saw Kerry as someone who supports queers among other things.
Look at the blue/red states,,,,there's been a brain drain on the midwest. Liberals, intellectuals, alternative peoples have all migrated to the coasts. These means that the average mid-westerner doesn't have to work next to a queer in his/her office, care about their ability to get health insurance for their partner or even get along at work together.
This return to traditional values pits us against the Middle East on religious grounds far more than most Americans see. We want to pretend that there is a huge separation of church and state in this country and there is not. While our real religion is materialism, we pretend that christian values will go down the drain with Democrats. It's said really since Jesus' message was really quite simple, 'Love each other', NOT love everyone except (fill in the blank).
I am often saddened by the apathy in this country and I fear that it will only get worse now. Hardly anyone believes their vote counts so why should they write their Congressman or Senators about any issue, let alone the White House.
Rope--
p.s. stay out of corporate chains as much as possible and put the money in the hands of the little retailers (forget 7-11, the corner stores have almost everything you need anyway).
pps. Vancouver is looking better and better, the housing prices are quite to my liking.

very well said Rope.
I wouldn't mind seeing more queers in the Canadian realm. Sadly, conservative thought is very popular up here as well. We're seeing a conservative shift in canadian politics, including an inner shift within the liberal party, and that concerns me. I'd love to see more queers up here to balance out the liberal side.
Move up here, we'd welcome you with open arms. :)
I am mourning for my american friends (and my family) today. I mourn for living in a country that borders america. I mourn for what's very clear: polarization of the masses will continue for a long time.

You're right, BB76, Issue 1 was passed by a large margin. Even so, not all of Ohio is hugely homophobic. After talking today with a couple people who voted for the ban, they admitted to not really knowing all the details od it until after casting their vote. Stupid, yes, but people just don't pay attention. It's ignorance over intolerance for some.
I've lived in Columbus for 7 years now, and have found it to be quite accomodating to gays/lesbians/queers. Of course, the right wing flaps just as frequently as anywhere else, but there is a very large gay community in the city. Before Issue 1 was passed, OSU even elected to grant domestic partnership benefits to same sex/unmarried couples. Also, Michael Coleman has been an upstanding Mayor for the city. [not to mention, a very vocal Kerry supporter]
My point being... sure, it's bad. It's ugly and disappointing. But there *are* alliances out there. We just need to learn to utilize them better, as a society, as a whole.

Ya know........ I'm been reading these posts over and over again.
Yes I don't like how the election ended..
But I'm still proud to be an American. This country is very beautiful. Granted there is alot of shit that is changing. Not always for the better. But WE can make a difference in the long run.
And yeah I'm not a big fan of the war but I support our troops they are doing something that they believe in.
So I guess my point is. Even tho things are so great right now. I will not give up hope on this country.

Where, exactly, would you go?
What area would you recommend, Canadians? What's the best gay friendly place to raise four kids?
I know, I know, some will think it's desertion. I would feel the same way if I were single and childless... I am tired, though, of having our family be "less than" somehow because we can't legally marry. The lack of respect due to this simple little piece of paper is astounding.
That's not our only reason for wanting to marry, of course, and our interest in Canada goes beyond the marriage thing as well. It's a beautiful place, from what I've seen and heard. The crime rates are much lower. Socially there seems to be a much more liberal mindset, and yes, I could stay and fight here for things I might never actually see happen, or we can leave and live our life in peace and relative contentment in a country that, at a minimum, doesn't legally treat us like second class citizens..
I don't know, we're thinking hard about it. Our kids love the idea. Of course, we're in Bush country and they just want snow, and for their moms to get married, and it all sounds very adventurous to them I suppose.
Sheri
If this were just any country. If this were Argentina and you wanted to go to Venezuela--fine, go who cares.
But this isn't ANY country. Bush's policies don't just affect gay Americans or women who need abortions or the about-to-be devastated Alaska ecosystem.
This country affects the planet: more than any other single nation.
If you leave and I leave and all the people who care about the environment and human rights leave, that leaves the Bush dynasty in complete and utter power.
And no country we run to will be safe.
Fight! Fight the power!

Sarnia? I've never even heard of Sarnia before! I'd say the west coast is a really nice place to live. It's right by the ocean and the mountains, has mild weather and a really nice summer, relatively clean air. They say people in B.C. lead the healthiest lifestyle in Canada. Ethnically, the city is very diverse and great authentic ethnic food. Lots of jobs in construction (preOlympics) and health care. The city is very queer friendly and relatively progressive, and lots of groups available for queer people. It would be great to have more butch-femme people here!

Americans who choose to want to live in Canada are not deserters. They seem to just be looking for peace and quiet. My wife is American, does that make her a deserter because she chose to live here in Canada with me??? Absolutely not! I love the U.S. One day we will live in the good ol' U.S of A but for now we are here in Canada. I hate that some people can judge and dismiss any american that moves to Canada. No one is running away nor ignoring the situation at hand, that's impossible. Canada might not be as big as the U.S but Canada is more accepting of the gay community. Mind you there will always be ignorance but for the most part, Canada is opened to people being married to the same sex. I have always wanted to be american but the day Bush got re-elected was the day I was happy I was Canadian.
As for my wife, just because she is in Canada doesn't mean she is not a proud American. We ride in our car with a huge American flag in the back. She wears her American T-shirts with huge pride and Canadians love it. She will always be American, now and forever. I will always support her and her country and what it stands for. We will always celebrate and support the U.S.
Being in Canada only means we are in a different country but when we go to the water we know home is just a bridge away. (We are in Windsor right across from Detroit.) God bless America and my wife...;)
Ang
P.S - the post above...Ontario is nice. we live in Windsor so anytime we need to go to the states we just cross the bridge...life in Canada ain't too bad these days...
Later everyone!!
