General Error Messages
  • Broken Graphics - Our contents page (and a few of the other pages on our site) uses advanced HTML to create a complex table for graphical alyout. It should be compatible with Netscape and Explorer 4 and above. Butch-Femme.Com looks terrible on Netscape 3.0 Gold! An upgraded browser is recommended for surfing our site. Sometimes we do totally f*ck up and forget to add a path to the graphic as we update the site. If you see this broken graphic error on a browser other than Netscape Gold, we appreciate it if you help us out and let us know.   <top of menu>
  • "404 Document Not Found" Error - This means a page is missing on our server. It could be that we inadvertently used the wrong link, or that we are still working on a portion of a Channel. Please make the Webmasters aware if you see this error message so we can fix it.   <top of menu>
  • Javascript Errors - Almost every page on the site uses Javascript which has been tested for Netscape and Explorer versions 3.0 and above. Are you certain that you are using a Java capable browser (Netscape3+ or IE3+) and that Java is turned on in your browser preferences? If you have a Mac and you've ever thrown out your Nescape preferences, you will need to reload Netscape for Java to work. WebTV and most AOL browsers don't support Javascript, but although those browsers have less functionality, users with AOL or WebTV shouldn't get errors. If you get a Javascript error in Explorer or Netscape version 3 and above, please report the incident to the Webmasters so that we can fix the glitch.   <top of menu>
  • Access Errors - If you try to access portions of the site that are password-protected, you will get an access error. If you want to access a photo gallery for a list that you are a member of, please write to the List Wrangler for the password. Also, sometimes the Forum gives this message when it has gone buggy. If you get this error on the Forum, please let the Webmasters know. That Forum can be a real pain when it gets corrupt.
  • Server is Busy Error - Our state-of-the-art server is currently using only 20% of it's capacity. If you get this error repeatedly, please let the Webmasters know. In all probability, the problem is likely on your end and you should probably consider contacting your Internet Service Provider if you get this error frequently. If you are on AOL, you probably will get this error no matter where you go on the Web.   <top of menu>
  • Insecure Document Message - This is a default browser message that pops up on all pages except those using strong encryption. Don't be alarmed. If you read our Privacy Policy, the document explains that it is reasonably safe to transport information across the various forms and applications on Butch-Femme.Com. We have taken the necessary steps to protect sensitive information.   <top of menu>
  • Internal Server Error Message - There are several applications behind the interactivity of Butch-Femme.Com that reside on our server. Usually, they are troublefree, but we do hope you will let us know immediately if you get this kind of message from our server.   <top of menu>
  • "Illegal Operation" Error - That sounds scary, but it's not. Netscape gives this error when you have been browsing for awhile. You need to navigate to the preferences in Netscape and dump your cache. Sometimes Micorsoft Windows will give this error when it runs out of memory. Get more RAM installed, or only run a few applications at a time.   <top of menu>
  • Problems with WebTV - Our pages haven't been tested with WebTV, but we know that WebTV doesn't support cookies or Javascript. Neither is required to navigate the site. If you encounter a Channel on our site that appears to be incompatible with WebTV, please contact us so we can see about using code that friendly to the WebTV browser. We need your feedback.   <top of menu>
  • Problems with AOL - AOL's browsers have always been problematic. We suggest you use Netscape or Explorer with your AOL connection for surfing the web. Also, we know that AOL's mail server is buggy because of all the bounces we get en masse on our mailing lists when AOL has problems. If you encounter a Channel on our site that appears to be incompatible with AOL, please contact us so we can see about using code that is more friendly to the AOL browser. We appreciate your feedback.   <top of menu>

Mailing List Help
  • How Do Mailing Lists Work? - Mailing lists are like an extended sort of discussion board, sending messages posted by individuals to the whole group. You can really gain insight from your peers sharing on this level. Every mailing list has it's own style and flavor, and it's usually a good idea to listen to the regulars before jumping in. Butch-Femme.Com has more than a dozen mailing lists you can join for free. Get more detailed info on the Mailing List page in the Community channel.   <top of menu>
  • How do I Subscribe to Mailing Lists? - The best way to subscribe to Butch-Femme.Com's mailing lists is to visit the home page for the list you are interested in. If you have problems following the directions on the List's home page, contact the List Wrangler for assistance. You can find the List Wrangler's email address on the home page for every list. The list instructions for the various mailing lists on Butch-Femme.Com differ because some of our lists reside on other servers. Club Heaven, Stonebutch, and Stonefemme are on a queer server in Australia using a web-based program called Mailman. Butch-Femme, The Femme Spot, Pool Hall, Couples, all the Femmes and Butches United (FABU) lists are hosted on our server, running Majordomo. ButchBrothers resides on QueerNet.org's server, also running Majordomo. All of our lists have different List Wranglers.   <top of menu>
  • Who is Majordomo, and why so rude? - Majordomo can be a pain, yes, but it does no good to argue with an automated application which only understands certain email commands. The List Wranglers never see the errors Majordomo automatically sends, so you can be assured it's not a human that has it out for you. There is some brief information about majordomo on the List Etiquette page. If you are still having problems with Majordomo, the best thing to do is to write to the List Wrangler of your particular list, or contact the Webmasters.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Unsubscribe? - If you find the volume of mail is too overwhelming, if you are going on vacation, or you need to unsub for whatever reason, never post your unsub request to the list! Please visit the Home Page of the individual lists for information about how to unsub. If you honestly still cannot figure out how to follow the instructions, please email your List Wrangler.   <top of menu>
  • Who Can I Contact if I Have Complaints or Comments about the Lists? - Try not to bring up list-related complaints or suggestions on the list as it can divide the group and bring about more problems instead of solutions. First take it up any issues with the List Wrangler. You can also write to the Webmasters if the issue is something you feel we need to be aware of, or if you don't find resolution.   <top of menu>
  • Can I Start a List, too? - Contact us if you are a friendly, warm Butch or Femme with have a good idea for a new list that doesn't duplicate one that is already in existence. We are always needing volunteers and Leaders on Butch-Femme.Com so that it keeps growing.   <top of menu>
  • Where Can I Find Info on List Etiquette? - Each list has it's own rules, but for general guidelines for every list, check out the List Etiquette page on Butch-Femme.Com. This is the type of conduct and common consideration that is expected from those who subscribe to our lists. If you don't adhere to these basic guidelines, you will likely be removed from Butch-Femme.Com's mailing list community.   <top of menu>
  • Can I Help Moderate a List? - Yep, if there is an opening, or if you want to start a new list that doesn't duplicate ones we have already. Check out the form and info on the Leader's Page.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Switch to Digest Version? - On Club Heaven Stonebutch, and Stonefemme, you can use the online web tool called Mailman to set options for how you recieve list mail. The rest of our lists use Majordomo, which you must access using email commandds. For specifics on how to switch to digest version, please see the Home Page for the individual lists, or write to your List Wrangler.   <top of menu>
  • Why Am I Not Recieving List Mail Anymore? - We don't normally unsubscribe people without notice unless your mailbox is full and the list mail starts bouncing. We have no way to contact you and no choice but to suspend your account until you get in touch with us. However if you attempt to direct or influence the list by threatening to unsub, either hoping to garner support on some issue, or to make a grandstand on your exit, it's likely we will consider it in the best interest of the list to save you the effort. If you have been unsubbed and don't know why, ask your List Wrangler before you assume you have been mistreated. Sometimes no mail simply indicates that the mail servers are down. Usually the mail is held and then delivered in chunks all at once. Occassionally data is lost, but not too often.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Send a Picture for the Gallery of My Mailing List? - Photographs need to be digitized for use on the web. If you don't have a scanner, there are two inexpensive alternatives. You can make use of a scanner at most copy centers, or shoot a roll of film and have it developed in digital format on a CD-Rom. Before you send a digital picture to Butch-Femme.Com, you will need to open the file in an image editing program to insure that the file is set at a screen resolution of 72 dpi, sized reasonably so that it will fit on the screen, and saved in a .gif or .jpg format. Please don't send .doc formats from Word, or enormous files that will clog our server. If you don't have an image editing program, please refer to the Helpful Applications page of Butch-Femme.Com for instructions on downloading a free image editor for Windows or Macintosh. When you are assured that the .jpg or .gif file is sized properly, address an email to webmaster@butch-femme.com and give us some info about your picture, such as your name and what list gallery the pic is for, and then click to add an attachment. This action should bring up a dialog box that prompts you to navigate your hard drive. Select the .gif or .jpg file that you had saved and hit send. That's it!   <top of menu>

  • Can the Webmaster Correct a Typo for Me? - Uhg. We can, but please don't expect our response for updates to be too damn quick. Chris and I are so busy lately because we just started new jobs. I write some myself, and totally understand why you would want your work to be "just right". We will do our best to make it right.   <top of menu>

Personal Ads Help
  • Why does "Search" Bring Up All Categories in the Personal Ads? - The Classified Ads program is based on a light "quasi-database concept", not a real database. The reason most ads appear under all categories is because the search tool works using key words. If a "Butch is Seeking a Femme" or a "Femme is Seeking a Butch", the search tool will pick up the keywords "butch" and "femme" in each. I would love to update the Personal Ads to a real database, but the upgrade would be expensive. As always... Butch-Femme.Com is free and has no banners.  You might have to dig through some ads to find what you are looking for, but hundreds of couples have met a soul mate through the ads. Good luck!<top of menu>
  • How Do I Post a Photo with My Ad? - You will see a link on the left-hand side of the personals home page for adding a photo to your existing ad. The photo for your personal must be in a .jpg or .gif format, set at a reasonable resolution (example: 72 dpi), and sized within 200 by 200 pixels or less. That translates to mean that the photo must be sized to no larger than 2.75 inches in height or width. Otherwise, the photo won't upload to our server. If you don't have an image editing program to resize your photo with, please refer to the Helpful Applications page of Butch-Femme.Com for instructions on downloading a free image editor for Windows or Macintosh.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Place an Ad? To place an ad in the Romance Channel, first read thru the guidelines. When you enter the site, you will see a left-hand menu with options you can click on. Select "Place Ads". This will bring up a form for you to fill out. We suggest you leave your addrress and phone number blank. Your email address will always remain hidden from view and your privacy will be protected. If you don't have a photo available to add, you can add one later using the same clickable options in the left-hand frame. The server will send you an email with a user name and password so that you can delete and edit your ad later. It is your responsibility to SAVE THIS EMAIL after you create your ad! Good luck. If you meet someone special, we invite you to share the story on our Love Stories page.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Delete or Change My Ad? - Our personal ads are now fully automated, and you can modify/delete any ad you submit. To change or modify your ad, click on the request on the left-hand frame and enter your account info. However, if you neglected to note your ad number or forgot what password you chose, you're at the mercy of the webmaster's available time. We have full-time careers and several web sites that take alot of our time, so the best we can do is delete your ad if you lose your account info.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Turn Off the Option for Having Selected Types of Ads Mailed to Me? - You can easily change this user option by logging into the personal ads program and selecting "Keyword Notify" under "Other Options" on the left-hand frame. You can delete the Keyword Notify option on this screen.   <top of menu>

Community, Forum, Chat Help
  • How Can I Find Community Online? - There are many ways you can connect with Butch-Femme community online: through being a regular user on the Forum, by joining a few of our mailing lists, by meeting others in your local area through FABU, by attending chat nights, by publishing your writing, and by planning to attend one of our "real-life" Butch-Femme gatherings that go on throughout the year. Usually, you will see updates on events folks are planning our contents page.   <top of menu>
  • What is IRC and How Do I Join IRC Chat? - IRC is a a type of Internet chat that has ben around for a long time, but it cna be tricky for the nwebie. IRC is a way for groups of people to come together and talk real time. As fast as you can type and hit return you can be talking, laughing and flirting with other Butches and Femmes. Butch-Femme.Com sponsors two chat rooms on the Dalnet: #sbheaven and #clubheaven. There are two popular programs used to connect to IRC: for Windows machines there is mIRC and for Macintosh machines there is Ircle. To join the chat room #sbheaven on DALNet, you need to be a member of the Stonebutch list. To join the chat room #clubheaven on DALNet, check in with the room moderator and introduce yourself. There are some detailed instructions about IRC on the chat page. If you would like to host other chat Butch-Femme rooms on DALNet and have us link to your DALNet Butch-Femme chat room, fill out the form on the Leaders page and we will give your spot some press.   <top of menu>
  • What IRC Chat Rooms are Sponsored? - Butch-Femme.Com currently has two DALnet chat rooms called #sbheaven and #clubheaven. We are also beta-testing an online chat program that we are calling the Hot Tub.   <top of menu>
  • How Do I Use the online Hot Tub Chat Room? - Soon we will have a regular schedule for chat nights in the Hot Tub so that everyone knows when to meet up. Would you like to host a chat night? If it is your first visit, you will need to choose a nick and a password that are easy for you to remember. You can set several user options once you are in the chat room, and you can make a profile for yourself so that others know who you are. The users currently chatting are listed on the right. You can send private messages to anyone in the room by selecting that person's name in the pull-down menu next to the "POST" button. Whatever you write will show up in the main window, but do not panic. No one will actually see it except the person you sent it to privately. Several people have reported that the Hot Tub is buggy on MS Internet Explorer, relating issues about the chat window scrolling back up to the top of the page when it reloads. I haven't been able to recreate this error on Netscape or Explorer myself, so please let me know if you have technical problems in the chat room. We aren't really sold on this particular chat program and could beta-test other chat programs if we need to.   <top of menu>
  • Why Does the Hot Tub Screen Scroll Like That? - Online chat requires that the page reload every few seconds so that user's screens will update with the new messages that are posted. You can set ho wfrequently your Hot Tub Chat page will lod in the User Options settings inside the application.   <top of menu>
  • Where Can I Find Chat Tools? - There is a pretty nice layout of chat and communication tools on the helpful applications page on Butch-Femme.Com.   <top of menu>
  • Can I Host a Chat Conference? - YES! We would love it if you got involved. You can host a one-time topical discussion, or a regular weekly meeting at a specified time. Please visit the form on the Leader's page and give us a holler.   <top of menu>
  • Why are Previous Posts Suddenly Missing from the Forum? - I love that damned Forum program, but a few times the data has become corrupt. The best we can do is re-install the Fourm from the last backup we have made. Sometimes Rhon will prune the board and delete off-topic comments, or move or rename new discussions. Did you check the maintenance log in the Forum under the folder "READ ME FIRST"? That folder lists all outages and a log of the webmaster's maintenance. If the conversation you are looking for was a recent thread, try hitting "Topics This Week" and see if the conversation was moved or re-named. No Butch or Femme who behaves respectfully on the Forum would ever be silenced, but the webmasters do have a responsibility to keep the Forum tidy.   <top of menu>
  • Can I Get an Account for the Forum? - You can get an account by writing to the Forum moderator, FemmeGrl@webtv.net, but it's not necessarry to have an account to use all the features on the Forum. The only benefit to having an account is that you can type in a nick when you post a new message and the program will spell out your email address for you.   <top of menu>
  • How Can I Report Problems on the Forum? - The Forum has two Moderators, Femmegrl and Sir Harley. You can write to either of them privately or leave a note for the Moderators in the "READ ME FIRST" folder on the Forum. If they can't help you with whatever you need, you can write to the webmaster.   <top of menu>

  • Can I Be a Leader? - Community Leaders are the heart and soul of Butch-Femme.Com. If you would like to have more information about moderating our chat rooms, hosting conferences, wrangling mailing lists and more, please visit the Leader's page.   <top of menu>

At the present, we are running Butch-Femme.Com without ads or banners. However, if you have a product you would like to offer in our Gear Channel, or if you would like to buy a banner to be put on our site, we could talk. We are looking for ways to offset the cost of running the server so that we can expand the services here. Write the Webmasters.   <top of menu>

Misuse of Resources
  • Where Can I Report Abuse Concerning this Site? - I try to regularly check the Guestbook, Forum, and other automated sites on Butch-Femme.Com to insure that we are not victimized by gay bashers, pimply young nerds, or disgruntled queers even, but my time is limited. If you see something I need to clean up, please tell me. If some weirdo is harassing you through the personal ads, don't worry too much... no one can see your email address and all mail sent to you through our ad prgram goes through our server. However, we can see their info, and their IP address, too. Do forward any such abuses to the webmaster, and I will forward anything abusive to an offender's ISP Admin. Butch-Femme.Com is also registed with Abuse.Net. Please see our Terms of Service for more info.   <top of menu>
  • How Can I Stop Someone from Sending Harassing Private Email? - The Webmasters are not responsible for the misconduct of others through private email, but we would like to know if someone associated with this site is harassing our members. You can also forward the whole email to the offender's ISP Admin. Even free email accounts such as Hotmail and Juno have policies concerning abuse. If you need any help tracking an IP address of any assholes causing havoc on Butch-Femme.Com, let us know. Our server logs all visitors here.   <top of menu>

You may not reproduce in any fashion any of the poetry, love stories, and other writing submitted by Butches and Femmes whose contributions have helped develop this site. If you swipe any of the content or code on these pages, I will take action against you.   <top of menu>
