BEYOND "WHAT TO WEAR"?

Butch-Femme.com Member MIa (who has been to several Slut Nights across the country) talks about D.C. and the premise of Slut Night:

"In Washington, DC, our Butch-Femme group formally meets approximately once every 1-2 months. Due to people meeting each other through the Butch-Femme.com Slut Nights, friendships have been formed and more informal happenings go on as well. We often see each other at local drag shows and try to coordinate Slut Nights around those on occasion. There are usually about 20-40 attendees per event, though the local FABU mailing list is 180 strong.

"The first DC Slut Night was on February 23, 2002. I got the idea from the orignal SF Slut Night and the resulting NY Slut Night that soon followed. I attended both early events and really enjoyed myself. I also wanted to find some way of really bringing together the DC Butch-Femme-FTM (our Slut Nights are very trans-friendly) community.

"Slut Night events have ranged from attending drag shows, to a basic dinner and night spent clubbing, to house parties. I'm very interested in doing some more daytime Slut activities, like possibly attending a women's sports event together, or a planning a picnic.

"I think my philosophy around Slut Night could best be summed up by the following post I wrote in response to the question "what to wear?":

"I wrote, 'Whatever makes you feel sexy! That's the only rule, I think.'

"Further, 'I'd also like to add that I frankly believe this is a good opportunity to push the boundaries that often restrict us in our dressing. I think often as Femmes and Butches, it can feel and be extremely dangerous to really dress the way that makes us feel most sexually powerful and in touch with our intimate selves. I don't think I have to tell anybody around here about the verbal and physical harassment that a femme in a slip dress and garters, or an obviously packing butch, can encounter on the street, and sometimes even at queer events. For me, Butch-Femme.com Slut Night is this beautiful opportunity to not be alone in expressing my sexual and emotional self through my physical presentation. So please take advantage of this opportunity with me. But that's just a request … like I said, the most important thing to wear is what makes YOU feel sexy.'
